Making WDW food at home

Who here has tried making WDW recipes rither from the different websites or Disney cookbooks? How has it turned out? Have you modified any recipes?

I have made Cheddar cheese soup and pretzel bread and it was so delicious that it was almost as good as being at Epcot. But yesterday I made Tonga Toast and I don't know if my bread was too fluffy and absorbed too much oil or what but it was a greasy mess and not really yummy.

How has cooking Disney at home gone for others?

I have made zebra domes three times now. It takes me two days to make, and I don't have a small flexi-pan dome thing, so my zebra domes are about the size of a muffin (but then, more for us to eat, right?). And I usually do it the flip way, where the zebra dome is actually chocolate ganache and the stripes are white. The recipe from Disney makes about 48 of these huge muffin size domes. But they sure are delish!!!

My DSis made the Caramel Apple Pie from WCC and it was pretty close to the original. She had complimented the waitress about it and the next thing we knew, she was hightailing it across the restaurant with a copy of the recipe for DSis.

I got the Delicious Disney Cookbook this summer and I've made the Maple Glazed Salmon with Onion-Mashed Potatoes from Animator's Palate and the Chocolate Souffle from Palo's. Both were amazing but I have to say that unless you have the patience for complicated recipes, these may not be for you. The book also has the Tonga Toast recipe but I have yet to try it at home.

The Maui Scalloped Potatoes recipe is fantastic! I make them all the time. Rather than use heavy cream, I use 2% milk and it always turns out sooo good.

We also like the Pineapple Bread and that also is a hit each time we make it.
There's two versions--one from the Spirit of Aloha Dinner Show and one from 'Ohana.

ok,what i want to know is, where are you getting these recipes ? especially the ohana one? i love the pineapple bread!

Disney puts out a cookbook with recipes from the restaurants. I actually have the first one ever made and most of the restaurants or dishes in it don't even exist anymore (it has the only pie crust recipe that I can get to work).
I have one of the select recipe books from F&W also but haven't tried any yet.

The recipes in the one that I have are pretty darn complicated as well, but good.

Here is an online list of a lot of Disney recipes to get you started.

Believe it or not, many of the chefs will share their recipes with diners. That's how my DSis got the Caramel Apple Pie recipe. If you happen to especially enjoy something during your visit, don't hesitate to let your server know and request a copy of the recipe if the chef makes it available. They're often happy to help you out.

We had the kids make the California Grill Rice Krispy Sushi.
I was awesome.
Got the recipe from allears I think.

I guess I have made a lot more recipes than I first thought. I have made the Coco Cola barbecue MANY times, and it is always good. I've also made the grapefruit cake from scratch and also used a box cake mix and instead of' adding all water I added a grapefruit juce/water combo to get the right flavor and then made the grapefruit cream cheese frosting.

At the Land they had this apple cake dessert that was so delicious when I was pregnant I literally stayed awake at night thinking about it. I finally used the guest service email asking for the recipe and the head chef of the Sunshine Seasons Food Fair email me the recipe. I tried to make it but it didn't turn out quite the same. To be honest, any time I get a recipe right I'm surprise. And my husband and kids are too. And the dog is disappointed because we will actually be eating what I make.

Is the Delicious Disney recipe book sold at the parks still? How much is it?

They usually have the latest edition available at most of the resort gift shops and world of disney.

The last edition was half price at the Disney character outlet store that is in the outlet mall about a mile from DTD (worth the cab fare to go over there and get all the souveniers of park merchandise).

We made the Mickey mashed potatoes from Chef Mickey's and they love them, my sister first made them and my DD was dying for me to make them when we got back.

I've made a few. I found the recipes at the allears.net site. The links below have recipes and pictures of how it turned out.

50s Prime Time Meatloaf - this was really good and easy. It makes 2 meatloaves, so I put one in the freezer for another time.

Boardwalk Brownies - From the Boardwalk Bakery. the recipe was a little wonky, so I tweaked it a bit. They were really good.

Cottage Pie - From Rose and Crown. This is a quickie version, but very good.

TiffanyK - We started using some of the recipes from your blog last week, and I thank you!

DH loves to cook, and he has 3 of the WDW cookbooks. He's made the butternut squash soup from Boma and the Goat Cheese Ravoli from the California Grill most recently. Both turned out pretty well, but those recipes are huge!

If you're a cookbook collector, you can always try Amazon. I've seen a nuber of Disney cookbooks there. I'm one that likes to see what recipes are included, though, before buying.

There's a monster thread right here on the DIS with recipes...mainly from WDW, but there are some from DL & DLP also. It's so big that we actually have an index for it in a separate thread: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1777635 There are no direct links to the recipes, so you have to find what you want & then go to the correct page of the recipe thread at: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1575103 The index is stuck at the top of this forum, so it's easy to find & the recipe thread is linked in the first post so you don't have to wander around looking for it. ;)

Oh - and the recipes are sorted first by course (breakfast, entree, soups, etc) & again by restaurant, which is usually what I use. And there's also a list of tips, tweaks & reviews that people have made in the thread, as well as all the requests that have been made for more recipes.

As for what I've cooked here at home & any modifications  That last part is funny! If you've ever read any of my posts about trying recipes...I rarely make things exactly as specified. It may say "heavy cream" but you can be guaranteed that I've used 2% or even skim milk instead. LOL

Our favorites come from Boma, but there are others we make regularly as well:
Flank Steak Marinade (only thing we EVER use for steaks of any kind...yum!)
Frunch
Durban Spiced Roast Chicken Salad
Cured Pork Loin with Coconut Curry Sauce
Fufu
Nut-crusted Mahi Mahi (or any other thick fish filet)
Peanut Butter Rice
Potatoes with Afritude
Wilderness Lodge Blueberry French Toast
Crisp Rice Cereal Sushi
Wilderness Lodge Rib Rub
Polynesian White Meat Marinade
Wilderness Lodge Strawberry Banana Bread
Broccoli Cranberry Salad
Kang Boa Chicken

OK - now I'm hungry! :teeth:

I have some of the Disney cookbooks as well as some of the Food and Wine cookbooks. Most of the recipes I have tried have come out quite well. Off the top of my head, some successes were:

Le Cellier's cheddar soup
Artist Point's smoky mushroom soup
Jiko's fish with vegetables of the moment and buerre blanc (this one took quite a while, but it was delicious!)
Boma's Durban flank steak marinade
Spiced Durban chicken on sugar cane skewers (from the South Africa Food and Wine booth)
Whispering Canyon's little nutty salad
California Grill's Sonoma goat cheese ravioli
Pierogies (from Poland's Food and Wine booth)

The only outright failure I can remember was the breakfast potatoes from the Crystal Palace. They were terrible!! Basically, it is shredded potatoes in a cheese-sour cream sauce. It sounded like a good idea, but yuck! The potatoes were undercooked and the casserole was SO greasy. I think I actually have a picture of it somewhere but I don't want to post it and make you sick.

!

Thanks! I'm glad you like the recipes.

I may have missed this earlier, but can you buy Disney cookbooks at WDW? Where is the best place to look for them? I've never thought about buying a cookbook while I''m there, I don't know why because it's a prefectly wonderful idea! Maybe I could have Mickey sign it :thumbsup2

We love the food from Marakesh and they have their own cookbook. I have made the berwat and my family loves it. I haven't been able to get the right kind of breading so I have used the filling in puff pastry pocket or lumpia wrappers depending on what I have on hand and it tastes great.

The Maui scalloped potatoes are about the only thing we didn't like. :confused3

I have a few Disney cookbooks, but I love using our Disney Recipe thread right here! It has many hard to get recipes directly from the Chefs. :cool1:

I didn't know that! I'll have to look into getting that one. We love eating there :thumbsup2
