Sad to see Skyway building pulled down??

Am I the only one sad to see that building being pulled down??

Why did they ever stop using it?? - I would have loved to take my boys on the cable cars over fantasyland - I used to love that when I was small!!

I know it hasn't been used for a long time now, but removing it completely just confirms that it really had gone for good!!

(between that and King Kong - I don't know why I bother going anymore!!!! - oh ok that last sentence was a bit OTT!!!)

A friend of mine said that it was because it didn't have very good disabled access, I don't know how true that is, but I suppose it's as good a reason as any.

It's the one in Tomorrowland which is being demolished, isn't it? It was pretty uninspiring. The pretty one in Fantasyland is staying as far as I know.

ETA: It scared the living daylights out of me!

I didn't realise it was just the tomorrowland one - that would make sense though what with everything going on at Space Mountain!!

IKWYM about being scared - I loved it, but always was slightly nervous when you bumped over those 'pylon type' bits - but it was a good kind of scared (it was my version of a roller coaster before I was brave enough to tackle Thunder Mountain!!!)

It really did have a fabulous view though, but I can imagine these days it is a bit too 'basic' to make a comeback - shame though!!

We went on it on our first trip in 1998. It was quite nice to ride over the crowds but very disappointing to see the roofs of the warehouse style building that housed the other rides. Not very magical.

I think the disabled access was part of the reason, and also that it wasn't getting a good number of people on per hour - we were told on the Keys to the Kingdom Tour that all rides have to meet a minimum number of riders per hour to remain viable. This might not be due to people not riding, it could be because it was slow loading - this was the case with the boats around Discovery Island at Animal Kingdom.

"In February 1999, a park custodian at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom was killed when the skyway started up unexpectedly while he was cleaning one of its platforms."

It was closed immediately for safety checks and never re-opened.

It is true that it didn't have good disabled access, but it was built pre-DDA and would have been 'grandfathered' in. There are lots of pre-ADA rides at WDW still in use that also don't have disabled access.

I would also have thought that they would be scared of liability issues if people dropped or threw things from the gondolas as they were over the customer accessible areas.

We liked it and were sorry to see it closed.

We really missed the TTA on our last visit too.

I have to say I don't think I've ever even noticed it (I never saw it when it was operational)

I would have hated it too, I don't like one at Alton Towers

I remember some one dropping one of thise huge turkey legs off it once when we were there.
