I class myself as a seasoned disney traveller.done trips with and without a car.this trip we did without a car.on the nights we eat of site we got a taxi from fount of hotel, which was never a problem as it would be mears operated. ie checker/yelow cab or the other one cart rember the name they trade under(but there all mears)
When we were coming back from eating at 192 end struggled getting taxi when it arrived they had to get there daughter to translate for them, they didn't know the way to our hotel onsite and we had to direct them
Next time we stayed on site while BIL eat of site without us and arranged with the mears taxi to pick up later on,again this was 192 after it didn't turn up they got restaurant to get them a taxi when it did she told them about a taxi that picked a couple and the child up 5 min from disney and drove around for 4 hours:scared1: parents were so concerned for there safety they just got out (noware near disney and paid $180.00)
Next night we eat at crossroads got restaurant to get us 2 taxis.4 turned up and they were arguing who should take us.we started to get in the first one that came.but they were still going on to wich i said"we will got to restaurant desk and ask them who we booked".I hadent shut my door but everyone else had. That started the DW and MIL screaming as the doors were locked i couldn't open them then.rest of party after hearing commotion tried to get out of there taxi and again doors were locked.Me was stood there i just panicked so just was shouting police and waving my hands about. eventually everyone was let out but the children were shaken up(as was DW,MIL and me).
We went back to restaurant to get a mears taxi but 2 of the drivers were still trying to get us to go with them,in the end they gave up.mears was there in a couple of min.
now don't get me wrong but they might have been ok but next time we will be only using mears operated or maingate taxi. apart from that had a cracking time)

It's a difficult one - are we too trusting... or too suspicious...

I've only got a taxi once out there, to get to DTD before the Disney busses started running. You assume the taxis which run around Disney are reputable and trustworthy...

Our driver definitely went the long way to DTD (we saw bits of WDW that we'd never seen on the buses, and I followed where we'd gone on the map later), and he paused at junctions for a considerable amount of time when there was no traffic to give way to... all to get his fare increased. The fares there appear increase with time as well as distance.

He got his fare. But NO tip. We sat and waited for the exact change, and told him why once we'd got the change and got out of the cab...

if you got it from a onsite hotel it would be mears,as for stopping at every junction they have to, its the law over there or mears policy(watch how the bus drivers drive)

It definitly pays to be on your guard we had a taxi driver take us for a very long drive from DTD to Premium outlets once. Normally cost around $12 to $15 never anymore this driver was over $30 dollars knew straight away he had driven us a different route as normally come out of DTD turn left to crossrds then right to premium but we turned right as we come out of DTD but you know what we said nothing as we assumed this was maybe a quicker route guess we should have said something but we didnt, we were just glad to arrive safely but did tell him when we got out of cab that we knew he had conned us he didnt care shrugged & drove away ! Never forgot that feeling lot more careful now. Get rough price up front so they cant take different route !!

its easy to get them all mixed up as there all the same colour yellow, but the main proper authorised ones get from the rank.
The others passing are touting

Last time we stayed at Cbr we phoned reception for a taxi to universal and it arrived we got in then spent the next 10mins driving round the resort as the driver didnt know the way out i had to point it out to him after we had been round 3 times:confused3
Then he joined the car park lane at universal not the drop off one and we were saying you have gone the wrong way but he was stuck in the queue whilst the counter was still going up - we get through and the police pulled him over told us to wind down our window so we could hear what he was saying and had a right go at the driver telling him this was no way to treat international guests and that he better not charge us for his mistakes and that he has had too many taxis taking people the wrong way through universal to up the fare.

Oh great, something to look forward to then - we are getting a taxi to and from the airport and to DTD for check-in when we depart!

ETA: I'm now pricing up the Mears pre-booked towncar service :rotfl:

Is there a rank at the premium outlets ?

Yes there is a valet guy who will get you a taxi.

I had asked when I was shopping in reebok and the sales assisstant warned me to get a a taxi from the valet guy as there were some 'mickey mouse ' taxis operating (obviuosly not the mickey mouse)

I got a taxi from the Outlets back to All Star Sports and there was a guy that was co-ordinating all the taxi's - he asked where we were going, asked us to wait and then assigned a taxi to us, it was extremely straightforward. :thumbsup2

Have used taxis in Florida for many years BUT always get valet/the restaurant to call one for us, and make sure they are Mears/checker cabs - never had a problem based on that :)

Paulh - sorry to hear you experienced those incidents, I hope it didn't affect your holiday too much  It's a shame you can't trust anyone, watching the Real Hustle opens your eyes to all types of rip offs I wouldn't even imagine :sad2:

I would book a town car over a taxi, FL Tours is a Dis sponsor and they were excellent when we used them in May.

We're onsite, but don't want to use ME - we want to get to CSR ASAP so we can drop our bags and get over to Epcot:goodvibes We're only there for 12 nights on this trip so we want to make the most of every second, and waiting for everyone on our shuttle last time was torture :rotfl:

I definitely think a towncar is going to be in order ::yes::

DH and I booked a towncar for ourselves back to the airport one year...because the 'cab' we had from the airport (minivan) stopped to keep picking up and dropping off more people! that was Mears too!

Hire a car and drive - its soo easy - or book a towncar for a long trip!

as we were doing the ddp for 6 nights and got a 14 day ticket so we were just doing disney car not worth it rest was dvc at VAKL .our longest trip was to the outback and when i asked a towncar service one you mentioned they said use the taxis as for short pick ups you have to use the bell services. As i said in my OP i thought i was a veteran but you always learn
