The What's For Dinner Thread - August '09(recipe index in OP)

Hey Y'all,
Wow I missed a bunch on here yesterday, I doubt I can quote everything, I'll take up the whole page!

Alexis LOVED school yesterday! Absolutely adores her teacher! Chris does too, because she called to make sure Alexis was supposed to get on the bus that afternoon. She sounds like a wonderful teacher, Alexis thought they played games all day, but after listening to her, she was learning when she thought she was playing! She didn't complain about the bus ride home even though it was a 35 minute ride home.

If the time doesn't improve I don't think I'll continue to put her on the bus. (Once I'm cleared to drive without the collar.) It's actually making mornings tougher because I'm trying to get DH & her out at the same time. Angelina came here to help me this morning. She rustled Alexis along while I helped Bob. My dr. appt. is next Tuesday, so I'm hoping I'll get the okay then. If not :confused3

Dinner last night was an almost disaster. Chris & Alexis hung out here after school & just threw my dinner & bread making all out of schedule. The bread never got finished, so now I have 2 seperate starters going. My short ribs were so overdone, I almost had to throw it out. The ribs were okay but the sauce was a goner.

Maria, I hope Lily is better today.:flower3:

I was until I got a call today that there is a water leak under the house.:sad2:

Just when I think I'm doing well with Kyle gone, I start crying as soon as I start talking about it with anyone!:sad2:

I'll pray that can get everything fixed cheaply & go ahead with the sale! :flower3:

Kat, I know how hard it is! I did the very same thing! Thought I was fine until someone asked about it & the tears would flow. Please call me if you need to talk!

Oh my 5 mins. from your house and she is on the bus 40 mins. I wouldn't be happy either. First day of school is Sept.8. In MI public schools can't start until after holiday. Sorry I'm alittle out off it I had an injection at 1:30. Fun fun.

Hope you're feeling better today. My DD told me that the route took a long time when she did it, many years ago. So I'm guessing it might go down just a bit by next week, but not by much.

I made an awesome Sour Cream Peach Pie. :cloud9: .

That sure does sound delicious! I love peaches. :goodvibes

Sheryl- I think bus schedules are always off the first few days. I always took the bus and the kiddo too, since the first day of kindergarten, I guess I've never thought twice about it. Keep in mind it might be late, some of the kids might take some convincing to get on the bus. Just be glad you don't have to wait for the bus in the snow!

See you all later!

Robin, No, I don't think snow will be a problem. But I can tell you I needed a bath after waiting outside for 15 min. in the slurry of heat & humidity that is August in Nola! ;)

Sheryl~I so worry about you. Please be careful. Hugs to you and your girl today!!

Today was Ethan's first day of Kindergarten also. I went over this morning to take pictures and to be there to send him off. Elizabeth took him and I was so afraid she would really have a hard time but she didn't get the chance as Ethan completely fell apart once they got there. Bless his heart. She ended up just leaving. I am so glad I didn't go as I probably would have scooped him up and took him home with me. ;) She had a few teacher friends call and say that he calmed right down. So all will be ok, just a hard day.

Love to all I missed. Have a great day everyone and hug those babies - they grow up so fast.

I so appreciate your worry! But try not to, I'm doing okay! I'm so sorry Ethan is having such a hard time! Elizabeth must be so upset! Prayers that it improves quickly!:flower3: Sorry I missed wishing you a happy b-day yesterday. Oops I'm not supposed to mention that am I?! :goodvibes:hug:

Here are some recent pictures. Beer can chicken:

You sure know how to carve a chicken! That salad looks soo good!:goodvibes

First day went very well! Emma's super excited to go back tomorrow. One little girl in her class already got sick, but I'm thinking it was heat related as they were just outside at recess. Crossing my fingers it isn't anything contagious. Thanks for all the comments on my pics on FB. She's exhausted now from a busy day and is relaxing on the couch.

I'm so glad Emma is excited about school! :yay: I'm worrying about the spread of sickness that the start of school brings too! We've just started to see cases of swine flu down here.:sad1:

They getting married at a place called Chapel By the Sea. It is much nicer if you ask me and she is wearing her wedding gown which she purchased last time they were engaged and never got to wear. I also think now there might be an aisle for DH to actually walk her down.
Poor DH has mentioned a couple of times already he always thought he would be able to dance with her at her wedding. I know him I think he is going to cry big time. He is so sensitive, I love that about him.

That sounds nice! I'm glad she get the wedding dress & Dad will be able to walk her down the aisle!!! :goodvibes

Well, Katie survived her first day of Jr. High, and more importantly, she loved it! She really likes all her teachers, and is excited about school! I love that!

The other 3 school age kids have their first day today, and Katie has the day off. All of them will go to school tomorrow. So, really, tomorrow is my first day with just me and Timothy at home!

Jacob, Leslie and Mary are all excited about school as well.

I'm glad the start of school is going so well in your house! Yeah for Katie! Glynis, You are truly blessed with a beautiful family!:goodvibes

Well Ethan update - I went over to get him this morning and as soon as I got out of the car I heard screaming. NOT good!!
This is the boys last night of golfing. Doug is really having a hard time with this, but again there really isn't anything we can do about it. Matthew will leave for college Saturday. Oh how I HATE change!!

Sorry this is kind of a sad post. Sure didn't mean to make it that way. At the moment you are all I have. :)

First of all DO NOT APOLOGIZE!!! Isn't that what you are always telling me! I'm so sad for all of you. Poor Ethan! and with Matthew leaving Saturday, that is just too much change at once. Prayers:flower3: & hugs my friend.

Oh gosh, this is so long. Now I see Maria's post!

Maria, I'm so sorry you aren't getting any answers for Lily! I'm praying for her!:flower3:
Also sorry you're going to miss Frampton! DH & I went on one of our first ( not the first but pretty near) dates to a Frampton Concert! Hearing his music always brings back good memories for us.

Ellen -- I'm sorry Ethan is having such a hard time adjusting. I know it is hard to watch, but he'll settle down. Liam was like that in preschool, but as soon as I left, he was fine. He stopped crying after about a week. It broke my heart every day though.

Sheryl -- That is a long bus ride. Liam and Caili are on the bus for a while in the mornings too. The afternoon is short, but the wait at school before the bus arrives is long. I usually pick them up at dismissal. I am glad Alexis is enjoying school!

Ann -- The new wedding location sounds pretty!

Maria -- I hope Lily is doing better.

Glynis -- Your children are beautiful as always! That is great that Katie had a good first day. Junior High can be a rough time.

Kathy -- I hope the home sale is still on!

Aimee -- Do you have your medicine yet?

Bethany -- I hope you had a good first day.

I think we're having pasta fresca tonight.

Well Ethan update - I went over to get him this morning and as soon as I got out of the car I heard screaming. NOT good!! He was already throwing a fit. So Elizabeth picked him up and took him herself. She wasn't real happy but what's a Mother to do? I guess he almost threw up he was crying so bad. The principle even came over and tried to reason with him. Elizabeth left him crying. Oh ladies, this is just breaking our hearts. But there really isn't a thing we can do, change or fix. He has to go to school. I am taking him tomorrow and we hope that will maybe better. We shall see. I really need to ask for some good thought here. Thanks.

That is not good :sad1: I remember how those tears felt  I hope that tomorrow is a better day for poor Ethan

I know you will miss Mathew a lot

Last night we were back in the puppy ER.
Greg will be heading to Maryland in the morning to see Leona. I will be staying home with Lily my Mom has to work.

A lot on your plate :grouphug: I hope that poor Lily is better soon

Buddy is feeling better I think. He seems to be anyway.

I have a prayer request. Debbie has applied for a job that is her job of a lifetime. She had her second interview today. I cannot discuss it but if you could offer a prayer for her to get this job I would appreciate it. She has asked my Mom for a favor, I don't think she ever has done that, not ever. This job is one she has always dreamed of having and is well qualified for.

You've got'em my friend. Prayers are on the way for this to all work out for Debbie.

I'm glad to hear that Buddy is feeling better.

Thanks for the words of comfort. I so appreciate them.

Last night we were back in the puppy ER.
Greg will be heading to Maryland in the morning to see Leona. I will be staying home with Lily my Mom has to work.
Of course the storm is headed here so I asked Greg to make sure there were batteries in the flashlights........We have already lost power for a day with the tornado last month...Oyyyyyyyyyy. Of course I'm a chicken about being home alone in the storm.
Please keep Mom, Leona & Lily in your prayers.

You sure do have a lot on your plate right now, prayers continue for all.

I don't think you need to worry about the hurricane, it's not predicted to be in your path.:goodvibes

So far we're still on for the sale, in fact the closing has been moved up a day. Still not sure of how much, if at all the water leak will cost us.

I must share this with y'all, this is why I worry about the boy.....Kyle is looking for a part-time job in the Baton Rouge area. His apartment complex sent out an e-mail that they were hiring Community Assistants so I told him to check into it because it would be very convenient to work where you live. He did and called me and said "Mom, they don't pay you, all you get is free rent. I need spending money".:sad2: After I explained to the knucklehead that I would deposit the money I would have paid on rent into his account he made a beeline to the office to apply. :rotfl:

Kathy, I'm glad to hear the sale is still on!

That is funny! Why in the world would he need free rent? :confused3:laughing:

Good luck to her with that! :yay:

I am soooooo sleepy today. I slept well last night too. Dinner tonight may be crab legs and oven fries, depends on what I feel like when I get home.

This week is crunch week for work, getting things together for the new school year. Next week is even crazier with training and everyone calling trying to get childcare at the last minute. Thankfully I will be away from the office for most of the week and won't lose my mind with the phone ringing off the hook.

Last night we were back in the puppy ER. The vet finally called back at 7 with her blood results & was very concerned. He said her glucose was so low they would have to do an ultrasound of her belly & when I asked the possibilities he said it could be the start of pancreatic cancer. He said the ultrasound would be Thursday afternoon & to watch for seizures! Well not acceptable!
I asked him why he couldn't order it if he felt she was in danger of any kind. He put me on hold said to come right in for more blood work & maybe to leave her in the hospital for glucose. They did her blood test right away & her glucose was normal! He said it is very rare but sometimes if the tech allows the blood to sit to long before the test you can get a false result.
He said to keep her on "bedrest" for 2 more days & see if she improves. Last night I thought she was better, today not so much so the watching continues.....

Bethany ~ Have a great first day at school. What is a pullout teacher? I haven't ever heard of that.

The first day went great! A pull-out teacher is one that works with small groups or one-on-one with students who need extra support or enrichment. Pull-outs are usually things like ESL, reading intervention, gifted & talented, speech, Occupational or Physical Therapy, remedial work, etc. I don't have a class of my own; the kids I will be working with range from grade K-8 and are all in different homerooms.

Our kindergarten does not start until next week, but I've heard they do something really cool to help the kids separate from Mom & Dad. They roll out a red carpet and only the children are allowed to walk down it. Then, they have the parents meet in the lunchroom for "Krispy Kremes & Kleenex" so they can get to know each other and cry about their babies.

Ethan will come around, hopefully sooner rather than later!

Awww, poor puppy! I hope she gets better soon. I agree with Kat - I don't think you're going to get it too bad, but good idea to check the batteries. I did that the other day. By the way, CVS has their batteries on BOGO sale this week.

I saw NYC got hit hard this week with a lot of trees down in the parks and on the streets. The ground has so much water in it this year with all that rain that they are falling easier I guess.

That is great for Alexis! After your stories about her teacher year, I'm glad she likes this one so much!

:lmao: about the snow! You know some kids were wearing sweatshirts today at school? :confused3 I guess they know they have the a/c on full blast at this place. :rotfl2: I need to find a sweatshirt - someone found the thermostat in my building. It had been pretty warm but they turned it down to about 70 and I'm freezing! I just go outside for a few minutes to warm up but at one point today I opened the door, felt the cold blast and decided to stay outside for a few more minutes! :confused3:rotfl:

Did you get a lot of rain this morning? They had to bring out those fans that are for drying out carpets to place by the doors to dry the entrance mats off! The water was comes out of the downspouts about the same as a fire hydrant when it gets raining good.

Nan, prayers said. Did she give you any feedback about the interview?

Bethany, glad you had a good day. I'm so happy things are working out:) for you.

I spoke to Lily's vet & we have to go see her tomorrow afternoon.

Dinner was turkey burgers with avocado & grilled yellow squash.

On a positive note the concert is Aug. 30th not 20th!!! I realized that tonight as I went to throw the tickets out, not sure where my mind is.....

I have to go hunt down some chocolate.

Nancy -- I hope Debbie gets that job!

After I explained to the knucklehead that I would deposit the money I would have paid on rent into his account he made a beeline to the office to apply. :rotfl:
:rotfl: You know somewhere in Greg's military file he is apparently classified as being genius level intelligence. I told him I would be happy to provide a wide variety of situations to dissuade his superiors of that notion. Like Janice said, book smart does not equal street smart!

Good news that the house sale is still on!

Bethany -- I'm glad you had a good day!

Aimee -- How long are they going to let the lack of medication go on??

Dinner ended up being barbecued ribs, which Caili tried for the first time and liked (the carnivore in her lives!), bratwurst (for the non-rib people...but Liam didn't eat that either...Caili did), macaroni and cheese, and salad. Liam ate almost all the macaroni and cheese. I had some fancy cheeses in the fridge, so it was a combination of gruyere, brie and monterey jack.

Until they get their head out of their ***. At this point, it's the pharmacy having the issue. Evidently. My GI evidently got on the phone yesterday to scream at someone but I still have no medication

I am determined to not get upset about it. I mean, I'm pissed, but I can't get too pissed. My disease is directly related to stress - if I stress about this, and internalize it too much, I'll just be in more pain. Since my GI office is fighting for me this time, I'm able to distance myself a little from the "front line" and not stress too much. Even just getting angry will cause me pain. It's funny how our digestive systems are directly linked to our emotions. There have been plenty of other times when I had no choice but to be the one handling it and this time I thankfully don't have to as much. I will call the pharmacy every day or two just to check on the status and simply call my GI's assistant and leave her a msg with what they told me. Then she calls whoever her contact is to follow up.

Thanks for asking :goodvibes

Kat- the storm is going to be few hundred miles off of out shores which is good news. I will probably be a Cat 2. There will be strong riptides for the beaches so folks are already being told that the Atlantic will be ugly. We are going to have some strong storms tomorrow but thankfully nothing like what our Southern Neighbors are greeted with each year.

*******************

Praying for a quick sale for you and minimum expenditures to get it done!

You made my day with Kyles reasoning :lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:I needed a laugh and your young man gave it to me!

Oooh, I hope she gets it! Did she feel good about the interview?
Nancy -- I hope Debbie gets that job!

She told me that the interview was a little awkward in that four of the five people interviewing her already knew the answers to the questions they asked. She knows that she has a good reputation with them, she has a strong history there and has worked with and for them. They gave her no feedback regarding how many other candidates there are left to apply and just told her that she will hear back in a week or so. She would love to call and ask a friend how she did but is afraid that will harm her in the discussion. She felt okay, I thought that she already had a first interview but she said that this is it. I find that odd, this is a huge position and one interview??????? I hope that means that her reputation and qualifications and known work ethic proceeded her.

:rotfl2::rotfl2: I am dying here! Somehow, between you and Caili, poor Greg has had his tail feathers trimmed!:lmao:You have done your job :surfweb:

Okay, Aimee, I have an idea. When there were issues with my Mom's meds and the pharmacy and Dr were having issues it helped to have another voice step in. That was me. Usually it was the Dr office who had either written the orders wrong or did not provide proper documentation why that med was needed in the strength it was ordered.
No matter where the problem was a phone call or two from one irritated family member usually would light a fire. I know that you should back away from this, so perhaps sicking your husband on the slacker pharmacy will get this done. It is way different trying to explain why you are not cooperating to your own customer.

I know that it is hard for you to farm this out but really, you need a advocate who is totally invested in your health and who can stay on teh line, asking to speak to each naysayer's manager until he gets someone empowered to get this done. Once I would call and just continue to escalate the call up the line I got the approval.

I never did cook last night. By the time Welby picked up Nola, who was full of beans yesterday, I just did not feel like cooking a real meal. I made Buddy a pepper adn onion egg scramble with tomatos and WW toast. I had eggs and English muffins. I have to cook that fish today but I will probably stick it in the oven. The humidity is already oppresive out there so I am not standing over the grill.

My sister wants to do something today and Marisa and I want to go see The Proposal tonight if Buddy will watch Kady. We'll see what th day brings.

Well, my finger crossing didn't work. Emma woke up this morning vomiting. Goodie. We've been through two outfits, a bath, and scrubbing the couch down already. She has no fever though, so I'm hoping it's "just" a stomach bug. A girl I work with at the pharmacy was diagnosed with Type A flu. Didn't know that was going around already as well! Too much to worry about this year. Emma seems to be feeling better, so I hope it's just a 24hr. thing. However, she did have a good 2nd day; she didn't even need me to walk her in.

Ellen--my heart breaks for you and Ethan's mom. I can't imagine having to leave a little one in tears like that. Praying that it gets better soon! It was hard enough for me to leave Emma and she was all smiles.

Kathy--LOL on Kyle's thinking! PD that the house sale goes on as planned!

Nan--sending prayers that Debbie gets this job!

Maria--more prayers coming your way!

Not sure about dinner tonight. Need to get through lunch first. I have one child sick on the couch and the other complaining that we're not going anywhere. Should be a good day!

This is just so wrong Aimee.

Oh my, I had no idea! It's still so far away and already you're feeling the effects?:scared1: I'm now worrying and praying for all of y'all up there.:grouphug:

Johnny & I will be heading to Baton Rouge in a few hours with a cooler full of food for the boys. We're taking them out to lunch and playing tourist today!:goodvibes

Stephanie - I'm so sorry that Emma is sick! Take good care of her! And yourself!

Ellen - I hope that Ethan gets over his separation anxiety quickly. I really liked Bethany's idea of Krispy Kreme and Kleenex! That's a neat thing! We used to get together as a neighborhood on the first day of school with muffins and juice for the kids at the bus stop. We didn't do that this year, things just got away from us.

Kathy - I hope you have a good trip to Baton Rouge! Thanks for the laugh from Kyle! I think we all needed it!

Aimee - I like Nancy's idea of letting your DH go to bat for you at the pharmacy. Alan does it for us, all the time. He is a rather large man, so he can be pretty intimidating if he tries.

Bethany - Sounds like things at your new school are head and shoulders above your old one. I hope you continue to enjoy it! A pull out teacher sounds really rewarding!

Dinner last night was wonderful! The frozen pierogie casserole on page 28 of this thread is a HIT with my family. We will definitely be making it again. My kids each had 2 helpings apiece!

Not sure what we'll have tonight. Depends on whether or not Alan and I decide to go out. If we do, the kids will have soup and cheese sammies. If not, we'll figure something out here. Maybe some grilled chicken and squash.
