The What's For Dinner Thread - August '09(recipe index in OP)

Oh the aide's the alarm clock didn't go off, she thinks her son played with it. She did come last night & this morning.

I did skim today's post.

Nancy, Prayers for Buddy! You must be so worried.

Aimee, I'm very sorry your having trouble getting your medicine. Insurance companies really stink!

Kathy, I understand how hard it is having Kyle move to LSU! I don't know if it's tougher for us "only child" parents, but it was truly miserable. You will get through this, I promise!

Hey y'all,

Sorry to be such a downer, but I could use some help. Anyone have any home remedies to stop coughing? Chris brought Alexis at 7:00 & she has been coughing non-stop. She gave her codiene cough med at 6:00. She's wide awake so I gave her a low dose of Robitussin cough, not helping. I've tried mint tea with honey, no help either. She was coughing up a lot of mucus earlier in the week but now that's lessened but now it's a hard dry cough. Any suggestions?

1 cup applesauce
rind of a lemon (chopped as small as you can get it)

2 tablespoons every hour...not sure why it works but it does~

Keep us updated. Did they say you could use a cool mist humidifier? That could help a hard dry cough:hug:

I don't have any applesauce. Even if I did I'd have to hold her down to get her to eat it! She hates applesauce. :confused3 But I will hook up the humidifier! Thanks I should have thought of that! :upsidedow

Morning all, Nancy was kind enough to share her rain with us. It looks like it's just for today though and we have a nice stretch of good weather the next few days.

Sheryl- Have you tried ice cream? If it helped Liam's eye, I'm sure it must be good for a cough, at least it would feel good going down.

Ann- So you don't want to hear that I slept until 9 this morning? Do both kids nap at the same time or is Luke done with naps?

Lauren- Sorry about your stove, enjoy not cooking!

Stephanie- Sorry you have so much running around for school supplies. The list the teachers sent home just asked for extra pencils and a backpack. I never new these lists existed until I discovered these forums.

Nancy- my dad's doctor is tiny girl too. I was in the car alone with him and he thought that would be a good time to tell me about the procedure. There was no escape for me. Unlike my mom, my dad will tell me his medical problems (that's because he's the only one that goes to the dr.) but I sure didn't need to here about the procedure. I'm sure Buddy's fine, usually the waiting is the hardest part.

Aimee- I hate insurance, it's a never ending battle. I consider myself very fortunate to have it and be able to afford it, but I know we've over paid on things because I can't read the stupid codes. I hope it get's figured out soon.

Laura- Hope Liam's eye is better today, if not ice cream all around.

I really try hard not to complain about the traffic here. If it wasn't for tourism I wouldn't have a job, I think many people who live here forget that. I just can't believe how much traffic there is, I've never seen it like this. I can't imagine it would be very much fun for vacationers, but I guess it's really no different than waiting in line for thunder mountain.

Some good news- my job got extended through the end of September. I'll go down to four days a week but I'm looking foward to being able to work a bit longer.

Dinner tonight is pork tenderloin, twice baked potatoes, carrots.

Sheryl, Here is something I found:

Mix a syrup consisting of 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger, 1 tablespoon honey, 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar, 2 tablespoons water, mix and drink.

Every evening my Dad would have a cocktail of honey, apple cider vinegar and hot water...he swore by the stuff and he lived a healthy life until 88.

*********
Good luck to Emily!!! Charlene's son played the Stone Pony not too long ago...I think the day I had T.

Gosh its pouring here...guess I should get some stuff done. I have been meaning to clean the screened porch walls since the beginning of the summer...maybe today.

Robin, does the place you work have a website? I would love to see the place...

********
Jeez, as I type my friggin' hands are shaking...I want to go back to having no symptoms of thyroid issues...

Sheryl seriously chocolate works for coughs. Also one of Alex's doctors recommended suckers. I hope you find something that works.

Ah sweetie, I hope you feel better soon.

Here is another day,

Day 6 – Saturday June 20th
It was a really short night for me. I was up at 9:30 as I had a date this morning. Today was the day I had looked forward to the whole trip, I was going to meet Amy. We chat almost every day on Tag’s site and we just happened to be in WDW at the same time. We had been texting each other since we had arrived and today was the day we were finally going to meet. I tried to get the family or at least Doug to join me, but all I got was a, “I’ll meet you there later”. So I got ready and left the room around 10:00. It felt so strange to be on my own and I don’t think a solo trip is in my future anytime soon. I got to the MK with about 45 minutes to spare so I did some shopping up Main Street. I found a few things and had them sent back to the room. We had decided to meet up at the entrance to AdventureLand and the benches there. I was a bit nervous as I really didn’t know what Amy looked like but as soon as I got over the bridge there she was. I knew immediately that it was her. We hugged and she introduced me to her wonderful family and then we talked like we had known each other all our lives. Isn’t that funny? I have met some of my best friends through the internet. So if you ever have a chance to meet, do so. Make it a public place and just do it. We visited for about a ½ hour and we both were just melting. I think today was the hottest day yet. This heat was just brutal. We came last year in August. And everyone told us we were fools to go to Florida in the heat of August. But believe me, this was much hotter than last year and the humidity was awful. I had such a good time meeting Amy and her family. We said our goodbyes and hoped to be able to meet again.
I walked back to Main Street as I had to get somewhere where it was cool. I kind of didn’t feel so good. I got inside Casey’s and found a chair and just sat and watched a few cartoons. I started to feel better, so I went out and shopped the other side of Main Street. It was about 30 minutes before we were to meet for lunch. As I came around the corner to the Plaza, there sat Doug. We talked a bit and waited for Matthew and Ali so we could check in. We had an ADR for the Plaza at 12:15. I called them and they rounded the corner. I went and check in and they called us about 10 minutes later. This was a new place for us and we were all really looking forward to it. It took forever for our server to get us some water and our menus. Finally we order and our food comes out. We never saw him again. Ended up asking another waitress for more drinks. The manager happened to come by and ask how everything was and I told him about our server, I usually don’t complain but this was ridiculous. He apologized and left. Still no waiter and we really did want some dessert. So we waited and waited and waited. Hey it was cool in there and hotter than Hades outside so we weren’t in any hurry if they weren’t. Finally out he came and took our order and left again. Another waiter brought our dessert out and refilled our drinks. He was so nice and apologized over and over. No big deal the food was outstanding so we probably will come back. As we were just finishing up, in walked the Mayor’s wife and his niece Miss Penny. They were trying so hard to get this crowd into their fun that I felt sorry for them so I started playing along. Well needless to say we had a ball. By the time they were finished they had presented us with a certificate as the family of the day. And we each got a Celebration pin. This why I love Disney!! We had so much fun that it totally made up for the bad service.
While we were eating we decided it was just to hot to be in a park today so we chose to go to DTD and get some serious shopping done. We walked down Main Street, through the shops and boarded the Resort Monorail to the Contemporary. We got off and went down to the bus stop and waited only about 10 minutes for a bus. We got on and realized that we were the only ones on the bus and the whole way to DTD. We got off and it was like a blast furnace. We stopped in the $10 and under store and then the next one – I forget the name. Ali bought a new dress and 2 bags – one for her and one for her little sister. We then went to the Christmas store and looked around then to the Pantry as Ali was looking for some Pizza plates. Purchases made then to Ghirardelli’s for a chocolate sample. They had some awesome sales going on and I asked if they delivered to the Resorts. She said no they don’t, bummer, as in this heat it would never make it back. At this point the day just came apart. I wanted a sundae, but no one else did. Ali wanted to go to the Lego store, but the boys didn’t so they decided to just sit. Ali left and I went over to the World of Disney. It was total gridlock in there so I didn’t stay to long. We finally all met back up and went over to the Wide World of Sports. They didn’t have any new golf shirts for the boys so they were disappointed. I then decided our day of shopping was done. We were all getting VERY crabby and I didn’t like the way it was going, so we left for the busses. We were able to sit under a canopy and it took 30 minutes for a bus to come. We didn’t talk a whole lot. I think Doug even fell asleep. It was just too hot for anyone to be out today. We got back to Pop and went right to the room. Thank Goodness it was cool in there.
We all took naps and tried to regroup. Around 6:00 we headed out again with much better attitudes. A bus for Epcot was waiting for us. We visited our Leave a Legacy tile and gave Momma a kiss on hers. Man I miss her so much!!!! I so remember the day we did those pictures – great memories. We rode Space Ship Earth for the first time of the trip. And all loved it. We played a few games afterwards and somehow lost Matthew. We looked for about 10 minutes and he didn’t answer his phone. We walked outside and there he was. He was just laughing at us. KIDS!! We walked through to World Showcase and turned right. We went up to Canada to see if by chance they had any Root merchandise yet. Nope they don’t and again I let a CM know how disappointing that is. She agreed and said that everyone is. Maybe if enough of us complain they will bring it back. I sure hope so. She did show us the hidden Mickey’s in the Pavilion and that was a blast. We carried on to the UK and was just in time for the British Invasion. We never come here that we don’t think of Margaret and Danny. Hey guys, we really missed you. They did a great set and it was over way to soon. We looked in the stores and tried a few different perfumes on. Wow, did we smell good. LOL
The Sound of Summer Concert - The Bee Gee’s Tribute Band was about to start so over we go. The kids went and looked in France and the shops in America. Doug and I really enjoyed the concert. They played Stayin Alive, Jive Talkin, Women to Women, Hold On, Tender With My Love and ended with Tragedy. The back up singer stole the show though. He was fantastic.
We met back up with the Kids and walked toward Italy. Doug and I each got a glass of Rosa and found a good spot to watch Illuminations. It was great as usual. I just LOVE Illuminations: Reflections of Earth and like to see it a few times each trip. After the show we slowly walked on around World Showcase. We stopped in Germany for another beer in Jay’s honor. We headed on around stopping to enjoy the evening where we wanted. I love Epcot at night. And it had cooled off to almost 90 so it was a nice walk. I am like a little kid at the sidewalk lights – I LOVE them!!
We headed out of the park and caught the 5th bus to Pop Century. We went to the Food Court for a late/lite dinner. The kids ran to the room and got our mugs and of course the cards. We played a few games and headed for the room around 11:30. We got the giggles and Matthew and Ali ended up having a pillow fight. I do apologize to the people in the rooms on each side of us. We were having a ball, but we’re a bit loud. It didn’t last long but we did have fun. Lights out finally at 12:30.

Have you had one of the new McDonald's angus burgers? I've heard they're pretty good.

I haven't! They are pricey, for Mickey D's, but they look good.

Aimee--Ah, welcome to my world of frustration with prescription insurance companies. Day in and day out we deal with this in the pharmacy, as I'm sure your docs do too. Somewhere in some dark office a bean counter is determining what medication they deem "okay" and what they won't pay for. It's so freakin' frustrating! I know the health care plan the government is proposing is very far from being what we need. But what some people need to realize is that private insurance are already practicing that kind of health care. Picking and choosing what they think we need. I have a friend who had breast cancer and her insurance refused to pay for her reconstructive surgery b/c ONE nurse (APN) was in the OR wasn't on her insurance plan. WTH? Makes me want to scream. Ok, enough of my frustration with insurance.

They have been like this everytime I start a new med. I know this one is new, and pricey, but come on! They have approved it for a few months and want to wait for more data before extending the approval to any longer. My GI office told them they will never get any data if they never give it to me! Anyways. They say it's approved but they won't talk to the pharmacy and get it to me.

And you're absolutely right about insurance companies already making the call on who lives and dies. It's sickening but a sad reality for many.

She cut and colored my hair and waxed me, Girls I feel like a totally new woman today. After we were finished we went out for dinner at a new Mexican place that was awesome. So good. What a fun night.

Fun! I need to make an appt for a wax...

OK, so the stove story goes...I have an electric flat top...and one of the knobs was broken so I tried to fix it, well, the thing sparked and poof, the hole stove is broken now. I think something shorted.

So, cannot cook, so we are going out! :thumbsup2

Have a great day all! I am sorry if I missed something.

:headache: I have a flat top as well - I actually hate it! But thankfully haven't broken it yet

Emily is in the city today...they flew in the choreographer from London earlier than expected so by 1 we should have the story:)

:thumbsup2

Some good news- my job got extended through the end of September. I'll go down to four days a week but I'm looking foward to being able to work a bit longer.

:cool1:

DH is going grocery shopping today :scared1: so I'll make something with what he brings home. Whatever needs to be used the quickest

Thanks everyone! I've put her in a steamy shower, only helped while she was in there. I'm going to hunt for some suckers or hard candy, I know I have chocolate. I have the cool humidifier running. If all else fails I'll attempt Lauren's remedy, but I doubt she'll drink it. I'm frustrated because Chris is in a leadership conference this week & I haven't been able to get a hold of her today. Thank goodness I got her yesterday, the child coughed up blood! The dr said she had lots of blood blisters in her throat & if it didn't stop to bring her in, but it stopped. Is this week over yet?

Lauren, I'm sorry you are starting to have thyroid syptoms. I hope you can get some help soon.

Sheryl, does it have to be a non-medicine remedy? I find Mucinex is good for hard coughs. I am pretty sure they make it in child doses. I am sorry you all got strep. Hope you are all going to be better soon!

Kathy, I am glad you are making Kyle his favorite meal! I bet he'll be wanting to come home some weekends to get his fill of Mom's cooking.

Last night I made poached salmon on a bed of corn and zucchini with a white wine sauce. It was kind of boring actually. I have decided that I don't like poached salmon. Plus, the recipe used an ENTIRE bottle of wine!! What a waste! Anyway, here is a picture:

Sheryl- Your poor poor Princess  I don't know any remedies, I would just keep giving her lollipops, Popsicles and anything else that is slippery.

Ellen- I am loving your TR!

Where's Vickie???????????????

Aimee- We are fortunate, our insurance plan works well so far. WE do need to be careful who is listed on the dental claims, some of the Dr's in the office are not on the plan so if one of them is on the bill my insurance company will not pay. I made sure that the office, which is run by a dingbat, knows that I am not paying if they mess up.

Lauren- :grouphug::grouphug: Feel better fast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Buddy is at teh Lab for his MRI. He will call when he is done. I need to run errands so I may npt be in when he gets in.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the concern for Liam. The patch is off now, and he says his eye is not irritated, although it is still a bit puffy. I think it will take a few days to return to normal.

Sheryl -- Those hard dry coughs are tough. Liam has a nebullizer, so we usually resort to that. I just use the plain saline solution for Caili because she can't handle the albuterol. Have you sat Alexis in front of the humidifier and had her breathe in the mist? What kind of Robitussin did you give her? The cough suppressant one doesn't help the dry coughs, but the expectorant offers my two some relief. Also, she shouldn't still have a fever if she started on the antibiotic Monday. She may need a stronger prescription. Liam almost always needs two antibiotics to kick strep.

It's my prescription insurance company that's the issue. :headache:

You must be so frustrated.

Welby brought one of those big gate things that you can configure any way you want. Right now it is a big octagon, but yesterday she tried to climb it:eek: so I am not sure how long she will be okay in it.

Nola is quite adventurous! Enjoy your beach day tomorrow! We were going to go to the beach tomorrow, but with Liam's eye, I don't think we are going to risk getting sand or salt water in it.

So, cannot cook, so we are going out! :thumbsup2

There are benefits to having a broken stove! I hope you are feeling better.

Emma is starting to fill out, and is smiling up a storm. Hopefully her sleeping improves soon.

Cute! I hope she starts sleeping more for you soon.

Maria -- Good luck to Emily!

Robin -- That's good news about your job!

DH is going grocery shopping today :scared1: so I'll make something with what he brings home. Whatever needs to be used the quickest

We have rain here today as well, so I think we might have pasta for dinner. It is either that or leftovers.

Evening Y'all,

Thanks for all the suggestions! I tried it all today & nothing really helped. Poor kid, Poor Nana & her Poor Mama. By this evening I had a coughing kid who was totally hyped up on honey & hard candies. Is this week over yet?

Chris called the dr & of course they said the usual to give the antibiotics more time & the cough will last for awhile. I'd like to get in there & strangle those drs. Chris said she'd try to hold off until Saturday to see if she improves before taking her back.

Becky & Laura, We already had her on Mucinex & I gave her Robitussin cough supressant with expectorant.

Laura, I have a nebulizer for my asthma, what kind of saline solution to you use for Caili? That might help! the steamy shower & the humidifier helped for a little while.

Becky, That poached salmon sure looked good! I've tried a couple of different kinds of fish poached & have given up on the method. It either takes a bottle of wine or a ton of olive oil. The flavor just doesn't justify the expense.

I hate that she has a cough but I see where the doctors are coming from. A cough is a way for the body to react to something going on. It's uncomfortable but the way our body is made to handle things. Sometimes it's best to let the immune system the good Lord made us work it's magic - even when it doesn't move as fast as we'd like  I'm honestly pretty anti-antibiotics because I likely have Crohn's disease thanks to the overuse of them in years past. I don't think everyone realizes how bad they can be when used too often; I certainly didn't. NOT saying that's what is happening here at all, just commenting that it's not necessarily the doctors not taking things seriously - it's just sometimes simply the best thing to do is let the body and medication work together to solve the issue.

I hope I don't step on toes

I just had leftovers for dinner instead of cooking. DH drove through Taco Bueno after basketball.

Good morning!

So the other day I said I was going to try to come back to comment on stuff, well that didn't happen. I fell asleep. I've been having a good week, just busy. I'm going to try to catch up this weekend but now I'm so far behind I might as well just jump in where I'm at. :sad2:

Anyways, I hope everyone is doing well and has a great day today. :grouphug:

Quick check in while I have my coffee...we have an 8am orthodondist appointment. I have to make them early because A is getting molds done and he gags so they want him on an empty stomach.

Not sure what tonights dinner will bring. The appliance place never called back so I still do not have a stove or oven. It did take me a while to get used to the stove. I always used it as a counter top until I left a burner on and melted the plug to the blender! :headache:

Thank you for all your warm wishes for this thyroid thing...I am sitting here sweating which is another symptom but it could be worse. I just hate that yucky feeling...my hair actually gets soaked. Ewww!

OK, of to get the kids out of bed. I will probably take them to breakfast.

Question: I have my cousin and her family coming over tomorrow and not sure if she will stay for lunch. I bought alot of cold cuts, salad and rolls in case they stay (they are picking their son up from a camp that is in the area at 9:30 so its an early visit). Is that n OK lunch to offer? I just do not feel like grilling or anything and she may not even stay that long.

Have a great day my friends!
