A DISers Book Club!

Wanted to add a book I just finished and absolutely feel in love with. Not sure if anyone mentioned it previously. The Lottery, for the life of me I can remember the author, I remember it was a female writer and it was her first novel. What a great story, a real feel good story, and they usually aren't my kind of book, but this one was wonderful.

Lottery by Patricia Wood.

Excellent book! :thumbsup2

From Publishers Weekly
Perry Crandall has an IQ of 76, but is not retarded, as he'll have you know: his IQ would need to be less than 75 for that, and he knows the difference even if others may not. Perry, the 32-year-old narrator of Wood's warm-fuzzy debut, has worked at the same marine supply store for half his life and lives with his wisecracking grandmother Gram, whose gems of folk wisdom help him along. But when Gram dies, Perry's selfish, money-grubbing family members swoop in and swindle him out of the proceeds from the sale of her house—and then come a-knocking again when Perry wins $12 million in the Washington State Lottery. Suddenly everyone is paying attention to Perry, but who can he trust? Even his friends from the marine supply store behave differently, and on top of everything else, Perry finds himself falling for convenience store clerk Cherry, who has problems of her own. Despite his family's shenanigans and sinister maneuverings, Perry holds his own and discovers abilities he didn't know he had. The wisdoms here run more cute than deep, but Wood's light humor and likable narrator should have mass appeal. (Aug.)

I think I'm #2 on the list at my library for this one, so I'm holding off. If they make me wait more than two weeks, though, at least I know where I can get it for $9.99 ;) Thanks!

Oh, and BTW, I'm about halfway through that 'Paranoia' book that I downloaded...not bad at all...especially for free!

Thanks for the update on that one - I downloaded it too and was planning on reading it as soon as I finish the List

I think that since this will be an ongoing discussion and doesnt have an expirartion date....

This thread should be stuck to the top of the Unplugged Board.

Hope this helps everyone find us.....

Speaking of Dan Brown, I got an email the other day from Fictionwise that they were offering 100% Micropay rebates on all Dan Brown titles.

They don't have the newest book up on their site right now, but if you wanted to catch up...

Awesome...I am so glad that this has become a sticky! :)

I just wanted to pass along a few titles to everyone. First off, I wanted to recommend The Nightly Book of Positive Quotations by Steve Deger. I was elected as the vice president of our local association (our district's "teachers union") in June. Because morale and climate is so poor, we are trying a few things to help bring everyone together and create a more positive atmosphere. One of the things we're doing is "Quote of the Day" where we email positive quotes to the entire staff each morning. I am so very excited about this.

I found Deger's book while looking for quote books the other night at Barnes & Noble. It is the most beautiful little book ever. It actually FEELS GOOD in your hands. There's even a ribbon to keep your place as the pages are organized by day.

Second, I want to recommend a book for teachers and parents. Teach Like Your Hair is on Fire is an excellent book I read earlier this week. The author, Rafe Esquith, is a very unique teacher who devotes countless hours (even beyond what you'd think) to his kids. The story is incredible and the text offers some very real ideas that could be implemented in any classroom or home right away.

Currently, I'm reading Esquith's first book, There Are No Shortcuts. It was published in 2003 which ironically is the same exact year that I began working at my current school district. This book is also excellent and functions more as a memoir of a teacher and parent than instructional/methods book. I am thoroughly enjoying it. This text has received slightly more criticism that the one above because many find Esquith's dedication and drive overwhelming. I find it inspiring.

As a side note, Esquith is a fifth grade teacher (like me) in California. He works in the Los Angeles public school known as "The Jungle" due to its rough neighborhood and outside influences. I looked him up the other night, after I finished Teach Like Your Hair's on Fire, and emailed him a question. He wrote back within two hours and asked for a time he could call me and phone number. I was stunned!!!!

Esquith called me the very next day. We had a lovely conversation and I learned a lot. He also reaffirmed many of my feelings regarding the standardized testing epidemic America is facing and solid literacy education. He said we should keep in contact and do it again sometime. I don't know any other author who has been as generous as him. When I first picked up and admitted my surprise in his calling me, his response was that he was just a normal person like me...a normal teacher and we're all in this together. That alone spoke volumes.

Any one read 13 reasons why i read it towords the end of the school year it was such a popluar book at school it was all most impossible to get it from the library.

Who knows how to make one?

Here here. :thumbsup2

If someone is REALLY ambitious, they can make an individual one for us that feature our favorite books.

Also, I'm mad I can't find the time to read The Cider House Rules (so good so far!), but I've decided to read Pillars of the Earth next. With all of the rave reviews I could not resist.

I finished Pillars of the Earth in two days...it was that GOOD! I give it two :thumbsup2:thumbsup2. Also make sure you read World Without End, it is written by the same author and is just as amazing.

I just started reading-Eve: A Novel of the First Woman- by Elissa Elliott.. it is pretty good so far.
