Square trees? Mmm...why?

Eyvind Earle used square trees prominently in the artistic design of Sleeping Beauty. The next time you see the film, watch for them. Square trees are also prominent in a few pieces of fine art from or inspired by Sleeping Beauty.

Square trees.... Why?

I remember this from the special features either on the dvd or VHS.

The strong vertical and horizontal look of the film was based on medieval manuscripts, before the Renaissance invention of perspective which, as Eyvind Earle (Art Director) puts it "[perspective] destroys the composition of the work to some degree."
