We just got an Aldi's about 15 minutes from me!!!!

Ok, so I've heard a lot about how great Aldi's is but never really paid a whole lot of attention because there was never 1 near by, well we finally got 1- just opened and I'm going there this weekend. What should I know before going in?????

We had one before but they just built a new one, so we finally decided to explore a bit. Ours had a quarter deposit on the grocery cart. We weren't prepared for this and found one with a broken slot. I never have change, kids take it and spend it on the ice cream man, pop machine or concession stand at baseball. I think we also had to bring in our own bags and bag our own items. We've only been once so far, I keep meaning to pop back in but just haven't.

Aldi Hint:

They scan and you stand at the end putting the things back in your cart. DON'T start bagging yet. (Been there, done that! Got yelled at by the checker lady!) The object is to get you through as quickly as possible, THEN you take your cart to the bagging counter to bag up.

It does make sense. They can get more people through the checkout this way and in turn have to pay for less checkers. (Less pay = cheaper grocery prices.)

Be prepared for grocery snobs saying that Aldi is beneath them. I LOVED my Aldi and KNOW that I saved a substantial amount each week. (I no longer have one since I moved.)

We have an Aldi's about 45 minutes away and they just finished building one about 20 minutes away. They are paving the parking lot today so I expect it to open really soon.
I love their meats. I have tried the boneless pork loin chops and they are the most tender I have ever eaten. I had the frozen backn wrapped filets which were good but I am not a bacon fan and even though I took mine off before cooking it still had a bacon flavor. Last night we had another frozen steak (can't remember the name) and it was so tender even though my son the chef cooked them well instead of the med. rare I like.
I have had their frozen chicken breast and frozen chicken tenderloins and all were great.
I haven't found anything I don't like other than their house brand toilet paper.
My son is a manager at Trader Joe's and he laughingly calls Aldi's the competition but he loves the food. I can buy stuff there that they don't have at Trader Joe's and it is still alot cheaper than the Stop & Shops in the area.
I keep a quarter in my ash tray for the carriage and use it when I go to Aldi's. It goes right back when I get it from the carriage for my next trip.

A few things to know:

1. You must have a quarter to use a shopping cart. You will get it back when you return it.

2. They only accept debit/cash. They may accept food stamps, not sure. No credit cards.

3. 99% of what they carry is not name-brand, it's all private label.

4. Their produce is not local.

The best things that I've found are:

Queso Dip
Chicken Nuggets
Drink Mix
Animal Crackers
Graham Crackers
Ice Cream Cones
Single-Serve Frozen Entrees

I love Aldi's. In fact, I just did my shopping there today.

We love:

croutons
salad dressing ( Grandessa House Vinaigrette)
french toast sticks
sweet onion salsa ( in the fridge section)
bacon wrapped filets ( not frozen - I haven't tried those)


- and everything else - we haven't found anything we didn't like - those are just my favorites. Happy shopping.

--- and it is much faster than going elsewhere. You can be in and out in no time b/c it is so small and there just aren't many choices. You really don't have to debate between one type or another.

You will love it! I have found that I do 75% of my shopping at Aldi's, and 25% at the regular grocery store. I save a lot of money and it doesn't take any more time because I'm in and out of Aldi's so fast, and I only pick up a few name-brand things my family can't do without at the grocery store.

We prefer many Aldi brands now. Our favorites are:

Spaghetti sauce
Orange juice
Havarti dill cheese
Frozen chicken breasts
Graham crackers
Rice Krispies
Chocolate chips
Artichoke hearts
Iced Tea mix
Plus all our staples like cheese, milk, bread, butter, flour, sugar, cream cheese, eggs. You can't beat it!

Just know that most of their stuff is VERY processed. I don't normally go because it is far from us, but I was over there a week ago and stopped in because I thought they had yeast (turns out they only have it at the Holiday season!) and my boys talked me in to getting some things without checking labels first......

many of their mixes are made with dried LARD and their canned goods must have MSG in them because we all felt that MSG headache and bloating that comes after eating anything with MSG.

Love Aldi's.. They have literally saved me thousands of dollars since they arrived in upstate NY about 10 years ago - maybe longer..

The only thing I don't care for is their chips.. Everything else is great..

All I can say is "try it".. You have nothing to lose and if you purchase something you don't like, you can bring it back and get a full refund - no questions asked..

Also, if you figure out what day they get their produce in, you can find great deals on fresh fruits and vegetables. Our Aldi's gets their produce in on Tuesdays, so Tuesday evening and Wednesday there is a great selection of produce, but the rest of the week it is pretty picked over.
