Phone call

Last night DH got a phone call from someone interested in renting our DVC. This person knew his name and that we owned DVC. DH said that we were not interested.

If we are on the "no call" registery, how do companies get away with this? Has it happened to anyone else? We've gotten general timeshare selling fliers in the mail, but this was our first phone call with that in mind. Is there something that can be done to avoid phone calls like this?

Thank you.

I find that a little unnerving that someone knows that much about you, such as your personal number? Did you get the company name?

That's actually a bit creepy! I would love to know how they got your info, I would definitely not be happy about that. The fact that they not only got your telephone number but knew your name really is just crazy!

We have not experienced this and hope that stays the case.

Your DVC deed is public record and anyone can access that information. If your phone number is listed it would just be a matter of someone doing a phone number lookup search on the internet.

DH didn't ask for the business/person. It must be the combination of public records and listed phone number.

Thanks.

"Creepy" was the word I would use as well.

Bobbi, was this a timeshare company asking for a rental or a private party? Even though DVC information is publicly available I still find it annoying and invasive if you've never expressed an interest in renting.

DH and I have never expressed a desire to rent vacation points to anyone. I am sorry that he didn't ask for a name of the person/concern.

We do get junk mailings from businesses regarding selling the timeshare. DVC is the only one we have.

With the Internet and so much information publically available, it doesn't surprise me, it is annoying and creepy. I tell you, it's enough to make me very reluctant even here to put when I'm going on vacation. However, there doesn't seem to be any other people with that concern, with all of the trip tickers that are around!

You know, I've never thought about that (hence my ticker :upsidedow)! Since I have such a "generic" username can anyone track my specific info (or others) through the DIS??

That is exactly why you don't see pictures of my kids on here. I feel that through my 2000+ posts, I have already shared too much information about us. You will see however, that my home is only shown as North and South East (our home up north and our home in FL). I often teach technology to kids and tell them to never give too much information about themselves online. The Internet has made anyone with any kind of public record (deed, phone number, license (teacher, nurse, lawyer, etc.) to be vulnerable.

It's probably the same people. There are a lot of websites cropping-up for people willing to "rent your timeshare." And I'm not talking about the people you may know who deal exclusively in DVC.

From my own experience, the Do Not Call list works pretty well but there are still people willing to flaunt it. Just yesterday I got yet another automated call from "Melissa at 'Card Services'" reassuring me that there was nothing wrong with my card, but that I could "press 1" to find out about ways to lower my interest rate. Been getting those calls for over a year now. Probably the same people who were calling about renewing my car warranty, too. (Do a Google search and you'll get an idea of how widespread these scams are despite the DNC list.)
