New Air conditioning system or Disney Trip???

We had a plumber come in and tell us we have to get a new central air conditioning unit and furnace to the tune of $7,000

When he left, DH says well I guess there goes our 2010 Disney trip. I said Hold on there!!! We're going to Disney, I can live with sweat dripping off me for another two years

LOL.... sweat will get you ready for the lovely florida heat.

I'd suggest taking care of the AC now while you can get that 1,500$ tax break. Then when you file your taxes next year, you can put that straight back into the disney bank.

I think I would go with the AC over disney but that is only because I live in South Texas. There is no way I would live with this heat we get down here!!

Not sure if Texas heat is the same as Jersey, we get up to 100's with the heat index at times. And if we can't finance, we'll have no choice to deal with the fans and ice pops for now LOL

Well if it were just A/C, you can always get around that somehow, even get a cheapo window unit for temporary relief, but I don't think I'd like to be without a furnace in the winter if it doesn't hold out! Pipes freezing, etc. But I'm not sure where you are, that may not be an issue!

But in all seriousness, I think it is in the best interest to take care of the house first, you know the whole a stitch in time saves nine theory.

Who needs AC! Go to Disney, if it gets too hot back home you can always use uncle Orville's Air Cooling system!

I know the tax credit has to be used on energy star appliances. Most tv ads for AC techs are advertising this and probably could tell you how it works. There's even one company here that offers like a 1,000 discount if you take an appt of some one that cancels at the last minute. But that'd only work if some one is at home all the time or could get home in a short notice. Like guy down the street sets up an appt for the repair guy on monday at 3pm, but calls monday morning saying he has to cancel for some odd reason. They'll call you and say, hey we can stop by at 3pm today.

Did you get a 2nd opinion on the A/C? I would at least shop around and look for other prices. And yes do it this year and get the tax credit not to mention if the A/C is going bad it must be using a lot of electricity so you should is a drop in the electric bill with a new more effiecent model.

I am also buying a new unit too and I am stressing a little over the cost and my upcoming trip.

I would personally go with fixing the AC in your house. Disney will still be there next year. That said...I'm putting off upgrading from carpet to hardwood and a few other home upgrades to go again in 2010. AC is a little more important than flooring to me though.

I could have posted this last year. We have never had A/C and I've been whining about it for years. We finally had a little extra money and I was whining even louder about a Disney trip w/the kids. He said do you want a/c or a trip to disney because we can't do both. I AM CRAZY I SAID DISNEY

Does the whole unit need to be replaced? Furnace and AC? Bummer. I'd definitely get a second opinion, and maybe a third.

If you start saving $10-20 a week now, you should be able to afford a budget Disney trip next fall.

AC is a quality of life issue where I live, since it's summer 9 months out of the year. But I would definitely call around and get some other price estimates. That does sound pretty steep.

We did this one year too-the A/C went out and we had to choose between Disney and a new A/C. We live in NY so we bought 2 window A/C units (it was the end of summer-just get us through) and went to Disney!

That being said-call around and get at least 5 or 6 different estimates. We ended up saving thousands from what our original heating company wanted to charge us. Especially with the way the economy is now-negotiate and let all of the companies that you deal with know that you are looking for the best price and that you are pricing with their competetors. You will get a better deal and be able to put some of that money towards your trip.

Also-consider waiting until peak A/C is over to replace your A/C. You will save a ton of money this way too because they will be willing to get rid of whatever they have sitting around in their warehouses at the end of the season so that they can prepare for heating season.

We only use a window air conitioner to cool off the bedrooms maybe 7 days out of the whole year, so a whole house air conditioning system for us would be an entire waste of money. But we do have to keep our furnace in good shape. However, our new efficient furance only cost $1500.00 installed last year, so your price seems really high to me.

It depends where you live. Jersey up to New England, you could probably get away with no A/C, but I'd still choose home repairs over Disney.

I haven't had an A/C in years but I think we have ten days a year that get over 80.
