Kennedy Space Centre Tuesday 19th May
Today was our tip to KSC, it was really Matts day as he really wanted to go there. Luke wasnt really interested and I was indifferent. Really I should get Matt to write todays report as Im sure Ill forget all the important stuff.
We woke up around 5am. The cab was booked for 6.15, as I knew the journey was only around 15-20mins. We had to be at Downtown at 6.55 so plenty of time.
Wed already decided to not have breakfast; I didnt think anywhere would be open anyway. I brought a couple packets of crisps to eat on the coach.
Well the cab didnt turn up! At 6.30 Matt called rang to see where it was. They said that all cab times are only estimates. When Matt had booked hed told them we needed to meet a connecting coach so it needed to be on time. He also rang the connecting coach company (Dolphin Tours) and they said theyd wait till 7am.
Finally the cab turned up around 6.45 by the time we got to Downtown it was 7.05. Wed thought theyd gone without us as when we got to the meeting spot there were only about 6 people there. I was expecting loads as I thought this was the main meeting point. As it turns out it hadnt turned up yet so we neednt have rushed.
The coach turned up shortly after but was pretty empty; as it turns out they were doing lots of stops at hotels!
Today was just constant rain. Florida hadnt had any rain for six month and now they were experiencing floods. Poor Luke got soaked just getting on the coach.
We got to The Astronaut Hall Of Fame around 9.30am.
Spent about half an hour here looking at the exhibits, they also had a simulation ride but it was very tame.
We then got on the coach and headed to KSC
When we booked, wed booked the package with the up close and personal tour and Dine with an Astronaut. I think as wed booked on the phone wed booked the wrong package but in the end decided to go with it. As wed booked this we had set times to stick to.
We first headed to the shuttle launch experience. We all enjoyed this. Im sure they said it was a bit tamer than Mission Space at Epcot but seeing as Ive not done that I dont know. We then looked around before making our way to Dine with an Astronaut.
Dine with An Astronaut was a buffet lunch with an Astronaut called Bill Pogue.
Now we knew theyd be a few others there but in fact there was around 200 people.
You kind of went up got your food and as you sat down Bill did a little talk and answered a few questions. I just felt you couldnt really concentrate on him as you were eating. I dont think id bother with this again; to be honest this is the bit we hadnt planned to book. We all thought the food was ok though.
We looked around the rocket garden and the early space experience before making our way to catch the coach for our Up Close And Personal Tour
The tour was 2hours and 50 mins, as we had booked this tour we had to stick to the same coach. Im not too sure what extra we got to see compared to the usual tours.
The only thing I would say is as we had to stick to the same coach we didnt really get enough time at each place we stopped at. As you can imagine it took a while to get Luke on/off the coach so this shortened our time. Although I dont think the others on our coach got enough time either. We noticed on the other tours they had lots of coaches and when youd finished looking at each bit you could catch any coach to the next area. All the coaches had the wheelchair lifts so if we did this next time wouldnt do the up close tour. I think we had a foreign (French) teenage school group on our coach and they kept talking over the KSC speaker.
Ok I will try to pretend I know what Im talking about
The coach stopped at the LC-39 observation gantry, the vehicle assembly building and the Apollo/Saturn V centre. We also saw lots of other sites, like the Eagles nest theyre proud of and Alligators before seeing the shuttle pads and the landing site.
After the tour we had enough time to look at the shuttles before doing some shopping
We caught the bus to take us back to Downtown at 5.30pm, but after all the stops we didnt get there until 7.20pm. We decided to just have McDonalds for dinner-not quite the Chef Mickeys that we had booked but we still had another evening planned there.
After the rave reviews on Dis we went to Cookies of Dublin and tried a Doh bar (deep fried snickers in a donut type batter with icing sugar on)
Wow this was amazing! We were too full to try this the other day but glad we tried it.
We then headed back to the hotel for a good nights sleep.
