Looking for Cedar Point discounts and money-saving ideas

My fantastic, wonderful little boy just turned 12, and for his birthday, all he wants to do is go to Cedar Point for two days, with one friend. I am the only one working right now; DH worked for an auto supply company which has recently decided to close and move all operations to Mexico. Luckily, I was able to get a job with benefits, but we're one income right now.

We will need two day passes, and we don't need to stay right on Cedar Point property. Are there any Cedar Pointers who have any ideas how we can save money on tickets and hotel? I really want to do this for my little guy, he's done really great in school, and he is excelling in Little League, and I just really want to give him this for his birthday without breaking the budget totally.

There was coupons in this past Sunday's inserts. I believe they were $7 off a funday and I think you can get them at meijer's and they will be below $20 a ticket with the coupon. We are looking to go this July and I was surprised to see the coupons since I don't think I have ever before. I am in the Northern VA area..

Under $20 a ticket for Cedar Point? I have never seen tickets that low. We were going to buy 2-day tickets on line for $55 each. We liked that we wouldn't have to use them on consecutive days. Let us know where you found the coupons. Will Meijer let you use the coupons with their discount? Thanks!

Last year DH took our 3 boys to Cedar Point and stayed at the Hotel Breakers. It was worth every penny - I booked the cheapest room I could find (looks like $179) that had 2 double beds. If you stay at one of the Cedar Point properties, you get into the park 1 hour early on your check-in and on your check-out day! My guys went to ride the big coasters and they got a lot done before 10 AM!

From the Breakers, you simply walk to the back gate to Cedar Point, so it's easy to take a break in the afternoon. They went back to the park at night and had the most amazing experience riding Millenium Force in the dark! Then they got in early again the next morning.

They also bought the "Pay Once, Visit Twice" tickets online for $54.99 (must be purchased by June 28 for this deal). They also bought 1 refillable mug (it's huge) and shared. I packed some breakfast things and they ate in the hotel room.

They had a wonderful time and would do it again in a heartbeat! I strongly recommend staying at Hotel Breakers if you can manage it! Good luck!

Thanks, I'll check it out. We have coupons that alot of places hand out but I am always looking for a better deal. We used to get season passes every year but now all our kids are over 48" and considered adults. Gas prices make driving 45 minutes each way expensive if you do it every other week. We would rather save for our annual Disney trip and visit CP once or twice a year.

Yes, do tell us where you saw the coupons, please.
I've never EVER seen tickets that low, even way back in the day when we used to go all the time. Maybe its a special for *night time* visitors. They used to have a program for entering after 6 pm (maybe 5 pm?) till closing.

ETA: just saw your updated post that the coupons were in the VA paper, several states away. Would still like to know the exact amount, and if for regular or just night admission?

Well, the $7off/ticket were in the Rochester (NY) Democrat & Chronicle. I pulled them out in the desperate, wishful thinking hopes we could go this year (as I have wanted to every year fro the past 11). I used to work at the Point, and I so want to get back.

Check your AAA office if your a member they seemed to have good prices in past.

Only other things I can think of are:
Check Cedar Point website for coupons
Look at Mcd's for coupons
once you figure out hotel check with them for special deals.

We went to Cedar Point last week. Had a great time, it was not crowded because it was suppose to rain all day, but it only sprinkled and we walked on to most roller coasters.

We stayed at the Comfort Inn Maingate (I think that's the name). It was very close to the causeway, the hotel was ok, I only paid $65 including taxes and it was about what I would expect for $65. It included breakfast which was nice and the breakfast attendant was very helpful and friendly.

I don't know what the price will be later in the summer but Breaker's Express was $92/night. It's not the Breakers and is on the causeway but you still can get into the park an hour earlier and I think that you can purchase starlight tickets for a discount.

I'm pretty sure you can't use coupons from a newspaper to buy discount tickets at Meijer, you never have been able to before, also if you are a member of AAA or a credit union, they also sometimes offer discount tickets.

One way to save money is to bring your own food. The food is better at CP than it was in years past but it's expensive. We've even gone to subway and bought sandwiches and brought those to the park. They have a picnic area right at the entrance, you cannot bring in food, but there is a very nice picnic area that is just outside the entrance. They do have a subway in the park but as my D says, home to the $15 footlong, it's not quite $15 but very close!

We had the Cedar Point coupons in Lex, KY too on Sunday. My wife emailed Six Flags 19.99 anytime coupons through work (Univ of KY), and I found Kings Island anyday for 22.99 on a tearpad at our son's school.

We stopped going to Cedar Point due to the lodging situation, it just got too expensive.

We spent Memorial Day week at CP last year. Then stopped there again in August on our way back from Maryland. We had season passes so we did have the early entrance.

We stayed off property both times and it was only minutes to the park. The first time was the Comfort Suites which was probably a 10 minute drive to the park. Very nice, new, nice breakfast.

The second time we stayed at a more mom and pop type place. (can't remember the name). Older property, nothing fancy, doughnuts in the morning. However, the price was right and we were just sleeping. Only about 5 minutes or less to the park.

Cedar Point actually has several properties besides the Hotel Breakers (which is the most expensive). Check out the others if you want the benefits of extra hours, walking distance, etc. We stayed once a few years ago at the Sandcastle or something like that. It is Cedar Point owned and was in walking distance. It wasn't bad, but that's been a few years ago, like I said. Hotel Breakers might be a nice choice, like someone else pointed out.
They also have a campground with cabins.
Also, check out ebay for coupons or discount tickets.

We LOVE Cedar Point. Last year we stayed at a Clarion which was further away but still very close. I would suggest a hotel with free breakfast, there are tons in that area. Look at Full Cup for some hotel deals--you can sometimes work a free night if the timing is right. Also we would recommend, the Safari in Port Clinton--our kids loved feeding the animals. Enjoy!

We stayed at the Lighthouse point cottages in Cedar Point a couple of weeks ago and I can't imagine going to Cedar Point without atleast having the 1 hour early entry. The cottages were awesome with a deck right on Lake Erie. It is a great park (Top Thrill Dragster was worth the trip alone) but I found the crowds to be even more than what I deal with at Disney and I was there opening week....was expecting no crowds.
