Root Canal?

I'm in need of one And looking for reassurance,anyone else had one?? The dentist as told me it's just like having a filling but longer (I'm sure she is trying to reassure me) my mum has said the same..I have a big fear of the dentist and only recently starting going back.

Please reassure me.

I have told her the sooner the better..so go back Wednesday morning.

had one back in january Beth, and yes I was terrified too, so much so I was completely doped the first appointment!, I had to go 3 times!
first appt - was to get rid of all old tooth and clean root out, then it was temporarily filled, unfortunately they caught a bit of bacteria in it and it was swollen and a bit sore for a week, to be honest it didn't hurt at all during the appointment and the pain after was definitely bearable, it was no worse than a mild toothache.
second appointment, was to take off the temporary filling and another clean out, this was successful and although i had anaesthetic injected I didn't need any other drugs, immediate relief on leaving the dentists so when i went back for my third appointment it was straightforward and a new filling was built, again no pain at all and it still feels great.
to be honest the price puts me off now rather than the thought of any pain and the worst bit was the jaw ache for having my mouth open so long, but it really, really got me over my fear and i wouldn't give it a second thought if i had to go again

I was getting worked up regarding going back,She as already opened it up and cleaned it and put a temp filling in,I'm looking at 2 more appointments.
I'm glad you wouldnt think twice regarding going back,that's put my mind at ease..

I had one just before Christmas because I had broken a tooth the previous week but didn't want it to be removed so said I would have a crown instead.

It was scheduled for 2 appointments but he did it all in one which he seemed pleased about. Three days later, on Christmas night I was in A&E getting antibiotics for a tooth abscess. I kept thinking that something wasn't right as the discomfort just didn't seem to be easing but I dismissed it when I should have gone back. Consequently, by the time the abscess had appeared there were no dentists open.

I had my root canal done about 20 years ago in the dark ages,I had no problems at all I didnt even have to have my tooth anaesthatised the tooth root was dead I didnt feel a thing. I am sure that things have come a long way since then so i wouldnt worry too much about it. Hope all goes well for you am sending this hope it helps

DH got one last week
had to go twice

he is really pleased with it
can eat again on that side of his month

The Doctor at A&E gave me Amoxycillin which started to work after about 24 hours. The pain went but the abscess was still swollen and mucky (I won't go into too much detail). Once the course had finished the dentist was open again anyway and they prescribed me a differant antibiotic which would be the one that they would have given to me had I gone to a dentist originally. This one started clearing it up almost immediately - although the amoxycillin had taken the pain away which was the biggest relief.

So, going by my experience 4 weeks would be ample time to treat an abscess although, hopefully it won't come to that.

4 weeks should be plenty of time to treat the abscess.. I'm allergic to penicillin so every antibiotic I get takes that bit longer to work. Mine was cleared up in about 3 weeks.

I too am allergic to Penicillin,will see how I go I guess.

I'm terrified of dentists but I actually found the root canal easier than a filling - they just scrape stuff out rather than using a noisy drill (ok so they have to drill a bit to get down to it but it it just didn't seem as bad). Good luck!

Quick update,had it done earlier not as bad as I expected
Thanks to everyone who replied it gave me reassurance.
Just waiting for the numbness to wear off,this slavering isn't attractive.

I had one last year after having a filling not be a satisfactory fix. It didn't hurt much and healed pretty quickly. The one thing that happened to me was that I had temperature sensativity for about 3 months. It was sharp pain from cold stuff and dull pain from warm stuff. I switched to a sensitive toothe paste and that helped a bit. I just had to wait it out, something about the nerves having to settle down in the area. Good luck with it.
