Whats best way for guest to come if I don't have enough points

What do you think the best way to book would be if I don't have enough points but want to bring some extra people. Should I rent, pay out of pocket, try and get them to join DVC for a small amt of points or buy more of my own? So confused!!!

Assuming you're paying, you could get a one-time transfer of points from another member, or try to book another room with the 25% cash discount.

We're going in August with another family, who went with us two years ago and just had to come back. Staying at OKW in a two bedroom - we applied all of our points available since we'd be going with or without them, then they paid the difference. We did a transfer with another DVC member, and used the combined points in our account to complete the reservation. They are thrilled to be able to spend 13 days at WDW in a deluxe villa with a family of four for $2000. They also love being able to buy groceries and use a full kitchen - saves them tons of money and they don't have to drag tired and cranky little ones to a restaurant twice a day.
So your best bet is to do a transfer for a one-time trip. If we weren't able to do a transfer, they were just going to rent points from another member and stay in a different unit near or beside us. The transfer was easier since we're able to manage the reservation by ourselves and stay in the same unit.

With a transfer you typically pay the same price you'd pay for renting, but the member transfers the points to your account and you have control of them. With a rental, the member makes a reservation and has full control over it.

Your post had details edited out so as not to construe this as a seeking transfer/rental post. You may ask general questions here, however.

This is no "minimum" number of points to transfer. Keep in mind, however, that since members are allowed only one transfer in or out per year, it is not something people are typically willing to do for a small amount. Also, DVC requires that no payment exchange hands for a transfer of points.

There is no such thing as "renting points". You can do a transfer from another member, or actually rent a reservation that another member would make for you. You would not have any control over that reservation, even though you are also a DVC member. The member who owns those points would be responsible for making the reservation, adding on things like Dining Plan or making any changes.

Let's say I am short a certain number of points for a reservation. If I find someone who's willing to rent points to me, I can do this:

• Transfer my points to the prospective renter. At that point they own those points.
• THEN, the renter can make a reservation for me, using a combination of the points the renter originally had for rent, PLUS the points I transferred to him.

This would be a complicated transaction to do. First you would need someone willing to use their one and only transfer for the year to do this (no such thing as renting points only transfer or renting a ressie already made). You would need to make sure you were transferring to someone who has the same home resort (booking more than 7 months out) and use year as yourself as transferred points will retain use year and home resort. Then, they would need to see if they could make the ressie you were requesting.

Hypothetically, you could go through the transfer, find out the reservation you want the person to make is not available, and then be unable to get your points back as you would have both used your once per year transfer transaction.

I would not recommend this scenario at all.

I can't imagine that people regularly lose a few points each year, because they can't find a reservation combination that exactly consumes their point total. Points are too precious to waste like that.
