Sorry, folks, I am not sure who else to ask, I guess it is somewhat Disney related as I am asking for our upcoming Disney trip...is peanutbutter considered a liquid for TSA? I am thinking it might be considered along the same lines as toothpaste.
I would like to take along a jar to make sandwiches and trying to cut down on the checked bag weight.
What do you all think, or what have been your experiences?

I would probably just wait and get it where you are going. I doubt they will allow it in you carry on. If you want to bring it in your checked bags and not want the weight you could try the individual containers that come 4 in a pack. i think they are made by Jif.

The last time we flew, I remember reading that peanut butter causes a particular problem even in checked bags because it is so dense that the scanners can't 'read' what it is, so the bags almost always get hand checked because of it.

Best bet is probably to buy the peanut butter when you arrive in orlando.

True.

Have you thought of mailing a package to yourself at your resort? DH and I always do this. I thought of it immediately because peanut butter is one of the things we send ourselves, along with dried fruit, nuts, crackers, lara bars, oatmeal, and other nonperishable food items and things like sunscreen. We supplement this with a grocery delivery from gardengrocer.

It's not very expensive to do it if you don't send too heavy a package. Our last trip, the UPS shipping charge for our box was about $11.

If you go to the UPS website (or you could use FedEx or whomever--just use a service that's trackable), you can create a mock shipment to see how much it would cost and what date you should mail the package for it to arrive at your resort a day or so ahead of your check-in.

Pack your package carefully, put anything liquid in at least one, maybe 2 plastic bags, and address as follows:

Your name, reservation number, and arrival date
Name of resort
Resort address and zip

I don't know where you're staying. Some of the resorts (the convention resorts like CSR, CR, YC, and GF) charge a package-handling fee now, somewhere between $3 and $10 per package, but the non-convention resorts (all the values, the other mods, and at least WL and AKL of the deluxes) don't charge anything to handle your package.

You can put the peanut butter in checked luggage. I always bring some. Well, that bag almost always get tsa checked... i see the little flier they put in the bag. So, 9 out 10 time flying that bag gets opened.

Here is the info from the TSA website:

Here's a list of liquid, aerosol and gel items that you should put in your checked bag, ship ahead, or leave at home.

Cranberry sauce
Cologne
Creamy dips and spreads
(cheeses, peanut butter, etc.)
Gift baskets with food items
(salsa, jams and salad dressings)
Gravy
Jams
Jellies
Lotions
Maple syrup
Oils and vinegars
Perfume
Salad dressing
Salsa
Sauces
Snowglobes
Soups
Wine, liquor and beer

But they will also more than likely go through your checked bag as well. PB is so dense that it looks like C4 on the machines.

What about peanut butter crackers?? The kind sold in a pack to snack on when on the plane?? I planned on putting them in my backpack that will be with me on the plane. :lovestruc

I've never had a problem carrying sealed packs of peanutbutter crackers onboard. But I'm going to move this over to the Transportation Board for you. You might get a different answer there.

My dd is a very 'discriminating' eater...at 15, her main protein is peanut butter!! So, when we flew to London a week ago, I packed a jar of peanut butter in my checked bag. No problem at all.
With us leaving our hotel at 10am, and our flight leaving at 2:30, and arriving in Boston some 7 hrs later, I knew dd would get hungry. So, I made up 3 or 4 peanut butter sandwiches at the hotel. I packed them in a ziploc bag and put that in a plastic shopping bag. Well...when we got to security, my carryon bag took a wee bit longer than it should have. Seems the stack of pb sandwiches caused them some concern, but they figured out what it was!!!
I haven't had an issue with pb sandwiches when flying domestically though.

Peanut butter (or mayonaisse or salad dressing, as other examples) is fine if it's a peanut butter sandwich (or mayonaisse spread on a sandwich or salad dressing incorporated into a salad). The problem is only if they are in a separate container all by themselves. Then they're liquids (or gels or whatever they consider them).

I would not, if you've bought them recently (or longer ago). I'd make my own and pack them in a hardsided food storage container. I'd throw those other ones away.

Going back to the OP, the rules for liquids/gels apply to CARRY ON luggage. OP references checked luggage. I suggest a visit to www.tsa.gov to educate yourself on the rules so that you understand a little better.

i have been on flights where they have asked everyone to refrain from opening/consuming any nut products at all while on board because of other passengers with severe allergies. even if you do get it on the plane, you may not be able to eat it. (in those cases, they also limit their snack options as well.) if you can come up with a plan b, i would recommend it.

I've worked for TSA for two years. Have a question go ahead and shoot it my way.

As for the Peanut butter, yes is not allowed through the security checkpoint. Although it is more than welcome to travel in your checked luggage. If it is a larger jar, be prepared to see a "love note" in your bag.

As for peanut butter sandwiches and crackers with peanut butter in the middle, totally acceptable. I have yet to hear of a flight not allowing you to consume nut products, because of others allergies.

Another common issue, is people bringing a huge jar of peanut butter (or any other liquid) with about 3 ounces remaining in it. Unfortunately, this is ALSO against the rules. So please don't try to take the most empty peanut butter jar in the house.

Hope this Helps.

I have yet to hear of a flight not allowing you to consume nut products, because of others allergies.

I am on at least a half dozen of those flights a year in America, if not more. The problems arise when passengers do not alert the GA in advance of their allergy and the entire aircraft is forbidden to consume nut products (or even products processed in a facility with nuts) Note that carriers outside of America however generally will not make that request.
