since we never been there before we really don;t know which island is better than another :confused3

If someone could lead us to the correct area this would be great.

Here are our guidelines:

arrival:

summer months arrival mid July to mid August 2010 [I know we are probably late already to put something in to MS:sad2: )

Surfing is a must for my daughter

Not too commercial are some islands worse than others:confused3 if so which ones would you recommend??

Also, does the major airlines go to all the islands??

we would probably would like to stay for 2 weeks staying at 2 different islands IF we could get it.

thanks for all of your help!!

Given your specifics I'd suggest Oahu and Maui as the best two options. Oahu to do the touristy things one has to do once and Maui as the best option no matter how many times you've been. While it's often possible to fly into other islands, it's usually best to fly into Honolulu anyway. What's best depends on whether you're going regardless or whether you're only going if you get an exchange. If you're going regardless, I'd schedule air to HNL for Friday and out 2 weeks from the following Sunday. I'd put in a request for the Hilton's and Wyndham on Oahu and the Kaanapali Beach Club on Maui for both of those weeks. You might also consider Maui Lei though I don't think the location is nearly as good for your situation. One thing to keep in mind is KBC has check in days for every day of the week. IF you're OK with getting that one and doing hotels the rest, that will improve your chances of success.

Dean,
Thank you so much for your wealth of information.

What about waiting for the DVC resort to be built in a few years? We want to go but think we will get more bang for the buck if we wait. We hope Oct 2012.

I wouldn't hold my breath for 3 years from now and I wouldn't count on it ever happening.

We like the Big Island and Kauai. Kauai is a very peaceful island with lots of waterfalls and the Fern Gardens. The Big Island has an active volcano and some black beaches. Maui is my least favorite because it is more of a tourist draw so it reminds me of some of the locations on the mainland. If you've never been then you'll like any of the islands!

I too prefer Kauai over Maui as it is much more lush and tropical and it is what I imagined Hawaii to be. It is nicknamed the "Garden Isle" and the waterfalls are everywhere. I think that the northern part of the island, Princeville and Hanalei Bay are incredibly beautiful. From my balcony I've seen whales with their young breaching in the bay and waterfalls trickling down the back side of the Na Pali coast, while Bali Hai melts into the ocean. I can't wait to go back.
