? re: 2 bedroom villas

Hubby and I are confused about 2 bedrooms. We know that there are dedicated villas, which have 1 entry, and then there are lockoffs, which are 1 bed with a studio. Here is where our question is:

We currently have a 1 bedroom booked at Kidani for July. We were looking to switch to a 2 bed (either dedicated or lockoff), but there is no availability. This is where we are confused - wouldn't they just book us another studio and make that into a 2 bedroom for a lockoff? We figured there would be dedicated 2 beds left, so hubby asked about lockoffs and they said no availability for those either.

What are we missing in regards to 2 bedroom lockoffs since rooms aren't assigned until after check-in, so wouldn't they just book us a 2bedroom lockoff (that is if studios are available, and they are ) which is a 1 bed and a studio anyway?

You can book another studio separately, as a separate reservation at more points. But there is no guarantee they will be together.

The problem with simply upgrading your current reservation is this...have you considered the waitlist? What about people that want a one bedroom and are on that waitlist? Or people that may already be on the waitlist for a 2 bedroom lock-off unit?

That is one reason it is considered a cancellation and rebook, and that they may be showing no availability.

Same thing when you have a 2 bedroom lockoff booked. You can't just drop the 1 bedroom or studio and keep the other, you have to cancel and rebook. It's only fair to those on the waitlist, you would be in effect jumping ahead of them.

FYI when we booked our bedroom for Aug at AKV we requested a dedicated, and we were told they only have lock-offs at Kidani Village.

To book it as a two bedroom unit requires a new reservation, and it would go to the first person on the waitlist for a two bedroom. You have no priority over any other person on the waitlist for a 2 bedroom, just because you have a one bedroom unit booked.

When DVC considers how many rooms are available, do they have so many classified a certain way for each time period and thus the reason maybe why there could be studios or 1 bedroom's available but no two bedrooms?

For example, I am assuming that a certain number of studios are made available every year, a certain number of 1 bedrooms, and a certain number of 2 bedrooms. Once all the pre-determined 2 bedrooms are booked, then they make people wait list, instead of just taking the studio and 1 bedroom inventory and converting it into 2 bedrooms immediately.

If this is the case, it would explain the OP confusion. Does anyone know if this is the case?

I totally know I can't jump at front of waitlist, but I am confused about the whole allocation of rooms and why there is a waitlist for lockoff 2 bedrooms in the first place? Does MS set aside a pre-determined number of studios, 1 beds and 2 beds and that is the problem here? I know I can rent a studio, but that is more points than a 2 bed, plus, we aren't guaranteed to be near each other, so that wouldn't be good either.

It is mathmatically possible that the previously reserved dates for one bedrooms and studios do not mesh to allow a lock-off unit to be available during your reservation dates.

An adjoining one bedroom and a studio would need to be available for the same exact number of consecutive nights, without causing another occupant to move. There is likely, as you suggest, a formula that DVC uses to make those reservations. It is a function of allowing people the flexibility to check-in/out throughout the week rather than having a set Sunday to Saturday stay like the old style timeshares.

A studio may, of course, have different arrival and departure dates from its adjoining 1 bedroom. So it is possible that a one bedroom and a studio may both be available during those times, but because of constantly changing arrival/departure dates already booked by other guests, that there are no two adjoining units available for the entire length of stay.

My guess is that Disney does hold a small percentage of one bedroom and studio units AS one bedroom and studio units only, rather than allowing them all to be 2 bedrom lock-offs to allow for the fluctuation of arrival and departure dates.

We assume that MS can combine a 1 bed and studio to make up a 2 bed unit but the possibility exists that they only create x amount of 2 bed units in their system.

There are a lot of inner workings in MS that we can only guess at. We think that we know how reservations and wait-lists are processed. Maybe that's the "Best Kept Secret".

The way I understand it, there are dedicated 2 bedrooms at Kidani but no dedicated 1 bedrooms or studios, only lockoffs. So if you get a 1 bedroom or studio, it's going to be a lockoff.

This has my hubby and I concerned now as we were never under the impression that they would pre-determine or set a certain amount of rooms aside. I would really love to know if anyone knows about this.

My hubby is calling again today to see what MS says, but it really has us wondering. I totally understand what Chuck has explained above, but it's still confusing to us. We only asked for a lockoff (we didn't expect there to be any dedicated units left at this point), as we figured it would be easy to arrange that. Now, it seems as if there must be some predetermined amount of units, or, as Chuck said, the computer knows that for each of the days that we are there, they have current ressies for particular villas and that is where the problem lies? But still, this is confusing because they don't actually assign your villa to you until check-in. Hmmm...?

This one is really making me shake my head. Not sure if I should post about this on the Operations board - do you think anyone would know just exactly how MS allocates villas?

As far as number of units/rooms goes, wouldn't MS have to keep a certain number of each room open for other ressie's as they come in? Which could be why they tell you they don't have what you are looking for or that they are all booked? Meaning they would have to keep some 1 bedrooms open and studios open even if they could complete a lockoff?

I would just book the 1 bed and the studio and request that they be near each other and you could get lucky that they are connected. In the meantime, you could waitlist for a 2 bed.

This past Dec I had a 2 bed and a studio booked and asked to be next to each toher and they were right next to each other. It was great since everyone moved thru the rooms the whole time.
