I am considering visiting a hypnotherapist to help with a horrible habit that I have had since I was at senior school - all through my life I have managed to hide it well and only my parents and DH know, I attended a day at our church recently, and we had a talk from someone who self harms, it was a really interesting talk but I discovered that my 'habit' is a form of self harming - I am mortified and really hate myself for having no control. My new years resolution was to stop but that certainly did not happen.

As a last resort I am considering visiting a hypnotherapist, as I have tried on a couple of occassions to discuss it with my GP but been too embarassed.

Have any other disers visited such a practitioner and with what results!

My friend went to one to get over her fear of claustraphobia (sp?) being closed in. It worked as she can now go scuba diving.

Make sure you do your research though, get recommendations from people & look to see if there is an accreditation site which has someone from your area.

Hope you manage to overcome it

Please go and see your GP before you do anything else and do not be scared or embarrassed, I assure you they've heard/seen worse.

I'm not ashamed or embarrassed about my past because it is exactly that, the past and without it I wouldn't be the person that I am now, too much has happened in my life and i'm a better and stronger person for it but in my 20's I was in a very unhappy place and tried a few times to end my life and spent some time in hospital. I have permanent scars that serve as reminders that no matter how hard things get, my life would be nothing without my husband and children (WDW and the DIS also included :thumbsup2 )

If you don't like your own GP (I hate mine, he's a pompous git) ask to speak to a different one (ask the reception staff who's the nicest), I have a fantastic lady GP that I see now and will only ever go and see her.

Good luck but don't put it off. Make the appointment, that's the hardest part, it gets alot easier from theronin :grouphug:

I am mortified and really hate myself for having no control.

Please do not think this of yourself-you will only depress yourself further and could cause you to carry on self harming yourself even worse.Sometimes realising what you are doing(as it now seems the case)can cause you to stop-i hope this is the case for you.
I am going to send you a pm,to explain myself further.x.

Hi

I used to suffer from panic attacks in a big way. I saw this lady on a regular basis and read a reverse Physicology book and my life was transformed. It took a few months of sessions and was not cheap, but I felt so at peace after my sessions with Delia.

Delia is based in Beaconsfield so I don't know how long it would take you to get to her but she is excellent.

Good luck :grouphug:

 I wish I had some great advice for you, but I would agree with everyone else and say, make an appointment to see your doctor as soon as you can, as it seems to me that you have made the first step by admiting to yourself (and us) that you need help to get rid of your habit

pixiedust: I wish you lots and lots of luck, and I hope you find the help you want

Take care and lots of hugs too

Good luck with whatever you decide to do and I hope that if you do find a hypnotherapist it works for you :) I'm also sending lots of pixie dust :pixiedust:, and as many people have said admitting you have a problem and looking for help is the first stop to recovery :thumbsup2

I think you are so brave to have admitted that you have a problem and hopefully this will be the beginning of the end.

Good luck

Thank you for all your replies, I have been encouraged by all your support and have had 2 pm's, that have helped me alot, I have decided that it is time to change my life around and to do something positive, so will today be investigating hypnotherapists - after all if they can help people stop smoking, they can help me. I will let you all know how i get on - I know that this is just the begining of a long road.

Good Luck and i hope whatever help you find it is useful for you.

I just wanted to update all disers that sent me good wishes, I had my first hypnotherapy session on Monday - it was a strange feeling as you are fully aware of all the therapist is saying to you and I did think that I am not really hypnotised. It was the most relaxed I have felt for a long time if ever, we stated with a consultation and talked about my problem and then in general, home life etc followed by a 30 minute session. At the moment I am optimistict as I have noticed a marked decline in my '******' and infact have not done it now for over 48 hours so although I know it is the begining of a long journey I am looking forward to my next session at the begining of March

I don't know how I missed this thread until now. :confused3 Both my sister & BIL have seen a hynotherapist & they both thought she was excellent & really helped them.

I wish you good luck with the road to recovery, I believe the hardest part is over for you as you have admitted you have a problem & have taken the first step to overcome it. Lots of pixie dust to you. pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust:

Glad to hear the first session went well. Good luck with your recovery:hug:
