Room Cleaning and Dry Dock....

HI.....I am new to DCL and read in another post that someone was disappointed because there was no room cleaning when dry docked. What exactly does that mean? TIA, Ali

I have no idea, since there are no paying passengers on board in dry dock.

I'm not sure what the original post said but they do all sorts of renovation and cleaning during dry dock beyond the major changes such as pools/spa, etc. At times the bathroom tiling is repaired, replaced, or deep cleaned and the bathroom marble is polished. Sometimes furniture is reupholstered and carpet replaced.

Everything doesn't happen all at once and only during dry dock. Many times carpet, bedding, and other furniture has been replaced while the ship is in port. It always interesting to see what's getting tossed on and off the ship in Port Canaveral. One time a zillion mattresses were being exchanged (on and off), another time rolls of carpet, and yet another all the moon shaped chairs that go under the desk/dresser in staterooms.

They are always doing something...

I'm not exactly sure what you mean but I do know after last years Magic dry dock, there were quite a few complaints because there was no major refurbishment of the staterooms. I believe the only improvement to the statrooms were the addition of flat screen TVs. Just from our experience on our last cruise on the Magic (Dec. 2007), the staterooms needed some TLC.

Whether this is a problem for you really depends on what type of work you think the staterooms need. Most cleaning and refurb of staterooms are done as needed so it is no surprise that this sort of thing isn't on a drydock list. (I can't imagine much that would be done to a stateroom that would require the boat to be out of the water.)

I will add that when we took a Med cruise on the Magic in 2007, our room was perfect. The fact that others report that their cabin needed some TLC suggests that they do routinely maintain these rooms. Perhaps our room had been recently refurbed while their rooms had not. A week later, the rooms they had might be great.

Don't quite know what the original concern was, but we just got off the Magic today. We sailed this time last year so we were back this year after dry dock. The only siginficant changes to the stateroom we had, which was the same as last year, was the new flat screen TV, which was really, really nice, and the safe has been changed. Instead of using one of the key to the world cards to lock it (and only one of the cards) it now has a programable combination using a pin code you select and can even reset at will. We really liked this little change. Other than that the state rooms appear pretty much the same, decor and structure wise. Ours and that of two of our traveling companions were super clean and in tip top shape, as was the entire ship. We think they do a fantastic job at maintaining the ship and she was quite lovely last week.

We were on the Wonder last week. Our stateroom is showing it's age in some places on the shower fixture and the tiles in the other bath. We saw a video of the dry dock makeover of the Magic and I am hoping they do something similiar for the Wonder. They totally replaced carpet and tile in the common areas and updated the spa. They also replaced all of the decking. This would be great for the Wonder too as she could use a little facelifting.
Flat screens in the staterooms would be cool too!

I ws on the cruise right after the Magic's last dry dock. Everyone is right there was no major work done to the staterooms. Bedding had been replaced prior to drydock. During DryDock new TV and safes were put in place. Other than that the staterooms were much the same. I know that some had hoped for more change and improvments like all room having a functioning fridge and new carpet.

My room was fine and I understand that DCL needs to pick just what is done during each dry dock. Money is an issue, I am sure, as is the time allowed to complete the scheduled work. I agree that needed work can be completed on the staterooms at any time. I have seen carpet in the halls being replaced as we cruised. There is no reason that DCL could not block off a room or two and rehab them while cruising. I did not notice anything that was a must to be done in the room I had or my sisters room.

Actually, the Magic had real fridges in each room when it first sailed. They took them out during the first dry dock. The cooler boxers were in the rooms by the time we sailed in 2003. Any long time cruisers know why they took the fridges out?

I remember reading some where that the real fridges put out too much heat for the space they are in and the size of the stateroom.

The "sisters" usually get the same up grades and enchancements when they do their dry docks plus some things that the other ship won't get unitl it's next dry dock. So I would expect the Wonder to get what the Magic just had completed and perhaps some extra changes when she goes into dry dock this fall.

The flat screens and the digital TV on the Magic absolutely ROCK. I was surprised at how large they were all things considered. And the mount they are on is awesome too, you can angle that thing anywhere you want. Now that they are digital (as the comic says, you have to know fractions to use the TV :)) all of the channels come in great. Before some of them were kind of snowy. Definitely no complaints in the TV dept.

Yipee! We are seriously considering a bounceback after dry dock and it will be fun to see the changes.Especially the TV. DH does so love a nice TV.:happytv:
