I'm currently in a category 6. I'd love to suprise dh and was looking at the category 4. Its about $1300 difference. I'm not sure what the price increase would be to go any higher (if it was available). What would I be gaining by upgrading.

You would be gaining a very little bit of space. The cat 4 is designed to sleep 5 people--thus the room is a little larger and it has a murphy bed on the wall in addition to the sleeping spaces for 4 that are in the cat 6. It really is not that much space. If it is 2 or 3 of you sailing, I wouldn't even think about spending $1300 for that upgrade! I could do a lot of serious fun for that amount of money rather than getting a minimally larger room. If there are 4 of you, it might make you feel better to have a little more space, but even then I probably wouldn't do it. If I wanted to spend more money, I'd go to a cat 3. That way, you'd really have more space and would have the concierge services/amenities, etc.

Difference between 6 and 4 isn't much.
Difference between 6 and 3 is a lot!

We just got upgraded from a 5 to a 4. All of the 4's are on deck 8, and the racket from the deck above every morning was totally not worth it. The extra space (double steamer trunk!) was nice, but not $1300 nice. :)

I have to agree with the other posters. I would save your money. We were upgraded from an 8 to a 4 and while it was nice to have the verandah, we don't miss it when we cruise in an 8. DS liked having the extra easy chair to sit in when the beds were made up. We also liked having the double steamer which we have enjoyed a couple times in a cat 10 too. It is not worth $1300 IMO.

Add me to the list of people who don't think it is worth the difference. That extra few feet in length is not really noticeble. Especially $1300 noticible.

on our last cruise we were upgraded from a cat 7 to cat 4. Like above posters have stated, it gives you three more feet of space. Thats it. Save your money and spend, spend, spend it on your selves!!!!:cool1:

Ditto, only cruised once and it was Cat 4, going again in March in a Cat 4. If I weren't using points I'd be in a lower Cat. We spent only our sleeping hours in the room, and though they are nice rooms and the balcony is nice it isn't worth the $ to upgrade from where you are. That $1300 will nicely cover your excursions and onboard stuff!

Another idea: if you would consider spending the $1300 to upgrade I'd stick it in an account to cruise again and book while you're on board!;)

Thanks guys. I think I'll give it a miss. I'm glad I didn't just go ahead and do it. I might add the REAS package. I think he will like this. Unfortunately I wont be able to rebook onboard. Travelling from Australia, I just cant consider when I might be able to get back.

You could always plan to arrive early at the port and look for an upgrade at that time, especially if they have any suites available. Generally cheaper than upgrading ahead of time but you have to be willing to stay in the room you're booked in in case there aren't any upgrades available that you find worthwhile.

I surprised my DH with an upgrade from a Cat 6 to a Cat 1 at the port on our Magic cruise last month!

That sounds fantastic. Just curious but whats the approximate price difference between a 6 and a 1. I would love to do that if it was available.

Since we are on the topic of upgrades. Does anyone know if I can call and ask if an upgrade is available? I am currently in a Cat 4 and was considering seeing if an upgrade was available to a Cat 3, or if that was even possible. Does anyone know the price difference between the two? I have looked and can't find it anywhere! Also, is the concierge service automatically included in a Cat 3? Or can you decline it? Just curious...

You can call and inquire about availability for any cabin category, including the suites. Pricing info for the suites (cats 1 - 3) never appears on the DCL web site, you have to call. As for pricing..... a cat 3 is approximately 30 - 35% more than the current price of a cat 4. You can also check when you get to the port, and if there are any available, the price will be less than doing it over the phone prior to cruising. Concierge service is automatically included in any of the suites, but you could tell the Concierge team that you really don't want/need their services. Not sure why you would want to do that, but it is possible.

It was just under $3k which was still less than we could have booked a cat 3 for initially. Cat 2 would have been $300 less.

That sounds fantastic. Just curious but whats the approximate price difference between a 6 and a 1. I would love to do that if it was available.
