Taking water on board

Our family drinks a lot of water...I mean ALOT! So we would like to take some bottled water on board to save on buying it on the ship (and prefer spring water to tap)...

My question is can we pack a case of water in our checked bags? We are driving so weight with the airlines is not an issue. Unless there is a weight restriction for checked bags on the cruise, I'd rather pack it in my checked bag than to lug it around with me for a few hours when we board. I'm thinking of packing a 15 count case in either 2 or 3 of our bags...

We wrapped packing tape around the sides and slapped on a luggage tag. The porter delivered it to our room. Easy as that! Now I know that some people are saying this won't work, so maybe someone that has tried it recently will give you an update. We were able to use this method on the Mexican Riviera cruise this past summer.

Yep, I've also heard that doesn't always work too...and I'd hate to carry the h2o all the way down there only to not be able to take it. that's why i was thinking of just going ahead and packing it in my checked luggage if dcl is okay with that.

They won't care if you pack it, but you might want to place the bottles in one or two of those large ziplock bags - just in case! That's what we did when we flew to Yellowstone at Christmas. We didn't have any trouble at all - and that was on an airplane.

On our Magic Cruise on 12/27/08 - we brought a case of water with us and the porter taking our bags just put a tag on it with our roon number and it was delivered to our room with the rest of our luggage

Based on the previous reply, it looks like the luggage tag on a case of water is still working. Happy trip planning! I wish we could decide what we want to do next so I could get to planning.....

We just returned from our 5th cruise (2 on Carnival, 2 on RCL, 1 on Disney). The last 3 of them we've bought a case of water on the way to the port,stuck it in a duffle bag, and checked it at the port. It shows up like any other luggage. As long as you tip the porters I dont think they'll think twice about it.

RCL charges $3.50 per bottle of water (conveniently placed in your cabin or at the gangway as you leave in each port) and I suspect Disney charges something similar. I paid $3.50 for a case of 24 at Publix in Coco beach. That paid for the 1 way car rental from MCO to the port.

Yes, tutoring has been busy, especially last week...this week will be a little lighter since some kids' exams don't align with their exam dates...no need in being tutored once the exam is over! Hope your exams and finalizing your grades goes smoothly.

Oh my gosh, we couldn't decide for the longest time what to do for our vacation. We've been all over the 2009 calendar (and even into 2010) trying to pinpoint a time to go! LOL! Glad the PIF date is rapidly approaching so I cannot be fickle any longer...this time it's really happening YEA!

On our last cruise, this past Oct, we put a case of water in a smaller rolling suitcase and checked it at the Port. When the water is gone, we now have a empty suitcase to put laundry or souveniers in.

Actually they do care if you pack it. They put in force specific rules regarding liquids last year.

Please be aware that any fragile items and beverages
must be hand-carried onboard in a day bag and/or carry-on, which cannot
exceed 22" wide, 14" high and 9" deep.

They also stopped accepting packages shipped to the warehouse before the cruise containing any liquids at all. You used to be able to order a case of water from Staples and have it shipped directly to the ship for example.

Not all porters will accept the water depending on if they have been talked to by DCL, so don't be upset if the one who helps you at the port says they cannot accept it. You are taking a chance by packing liquids in suitcases. I have heard of several people who have been paged by DCL after they were on the ship and had to reenter the terminal to claim their beverages. They probably implemented this new rule because of too many instances of breakage/leaking. When something like that leaks it is not restricted to just the person's luggage who packed it. Anyone around them is at risk to have their clothing ruined before they even board the ship. That is not the way to start a vacation on DCL.

Softsided rolling coolers make it very easy to take any beverages onboard with you.

I just returned from Magic yesterday. Our porter told us that due to the new policy, he could not take water for us, instead he asked us to carry onboard ourselves.

Not sure if it is about tipping (we gave him $20 for 4 pieces of luggages) or what, but I knew that other porters still accept cases of water.

Like I posted, you cannot fault the porters. The ones who follow the policy are just doing their job. I seriously doubt that his refusal was because of the tip...in fact it may have convinced other porters to not go by the policy since that was VERY generous.

I was one of the casualties of someone packing liquor or whatever in their checked luggage on our recent Dec cruise. When I received my luggage all my clothes were swimming in someones favorite liquid. So I spent part of my first night on the cruise washing my clothes. Not exactly what I call fun.

I was one of the casualties of someone packing liquor or whatever in their checked luggage on our recent Dec cruise. When I received my luggage all my clothes were swimming in someones favorite liquid. So I spent part of my first night on the cruise washing my clothes. Not exactly what I call fun.

I have to agree with you! How terrible! Did you contact GS to see if they would clean your clothes for you? This is exactly why anyone who thinks that they can "just get away with it" should not try to.

On 5 cruises that is one thing that we have not observed being a problem. The CMs have ushered anyone out of the area pretty quickly. Were the CMs on your cruises not willing to do that?

the bottled water onboard is Evian and it is something like $34 for a case. So I will bring bottled water in a small rolling suitcase. I will check it if the Porter allows it, if not I will take it as a carry-on.

As long as I can bring the water on in a rolling case, I don't care if my case of water comes with me on the ship or the porter takes it. But for a week long cruise, I'm bringing a case with me. Prices are way too high to buy it on the ship.
