What if you don't have enough points?

Hopefully someone can answer this for me.

My husband rented points from a friend (this is my Christmas gift). His friend wan't using any of his points this year so he rented all - 150.

I am now trying to figure out how to use them and I know I have various options. My #1 choice is to get a 2 bedroom (my sister will be traveling with me, my husband and son) for 6 nights. We stayed at a 2bedroom (BWV) last year for 5 nights and I would love the extra day.

Of course 150 points is not enough at any resort for this. I am only 3 points short of 2-beroom value at AKV.

My question...when my friend books the trip for me - can she ask to "pay" additional for the lack of points? Of course we will pay her whatever the cost.
For example - can she request AKV 2bed for 6 nights - use the 150 points and pay extra for the missing 3?

If so, how much would it cost to do this?

Thanks for your expertise. I appreciate our friends renting us points and don't want to put them out, but if there's a way I can get that 6th night it would be great!

I know I can book 2 studios for 6 nights, but I liked all of us being in the same room while still having our privacy. And the kitchen/livingroom plus washer & dryer come in handy when you have a 2 year old son.

Thanks for your help!

Usually, the value rooms are difficult to get on short notice and if they aren't the home resort.

Your friend can't purchase ''extra" points. Now, they probably have the 3 points they can borrow from next year....don't know how close of friends they are. If you can rent 3 additional points from them....that would be the cheapest way to go. You can book five nights value 2 BR and 1 night 2 studios. Of course, this is if you only go during the Adventure Season.

What dates are you hoping for?

Thanks. Right now we're planning on going in Sept. (We went that time last year). It works besst for mine and my husbands work, plus I can make the most use of the points.

Their home resport is SSR. Which I'm thinking about.
Last year I easily got a 2-bedroom BWV Standard View when booking for that time at 7-month mark.

For 5 nights I can get a 2-bedroom at any of the resorts with 150 points.(Last year they only had 127 points to rent)
For 6 nights I can get 2 studios at BWV (standard view), SSR, AKV (Standard View) or OKW. I'm hoping they can put the rooms near eachother.

I guess I got spoiled with the 2-bedroom last year. I know I can book the 2-bedroom for 5 days thru DVC and then try and get a one night myself thru Disney. But who wants to change rooms for one night?

I think my friends gave all all they could (DH knew we needed around 170-180pts for 2-bedroom 6 nights).

So I guess we have to decide what's more important - a 2-bedroom or an extra day. Also we're considering Labor day week as our week (again same week as last year). And if we do that and go for 5 nights we'll be flying home on 9/11. I know it may sound silly, but I saw everything first-hand from my office window on 9/11 and I don not want to fly on that day. So either it's 6 nights or we go the following week for 5.

First of all, if you can get 2 studios at OKW, they will NOT be near each other. It is physically impossilbe. All studios at OKW are on the outside ends of each building. The best they can do is either above or below each other or on opposite ends of the building. At BWV you COULD be close, but there is no guarantee. Also, they would require that an adult be in each room.

I guess I got spoiled with the 2-bedroom last year. I know I can book the 2-bedroom for 5 days thru DVC and then try and get a one night myself thru Disney. But who wants to change rooms for one night? Changing rooms, while not convenient, isn't all that bad for just one night. You have to pack up to go home anyway, and you can put everything for that one night in one case or near the top.

I think my friends gave all all they could (DH knew we needed around 170-180pts for 2-bedroom 6 nights). A 2 bedroom at OKW for that time period is 164 points, and that would be your cheapest option after AKV value. Remember that AKV value is considerably smaller than other 2 bedrooms and will be a difficult thing to get at the 7 month mark. It also will NOT have the extra bathroom or the extra bed like other AKV units have.

So I guess we have to decide what's more important - a 2-bedroom or an extra day. Also we're considering Labor day week as our week (again same week as last year). I've answered most things within your quote above, but I wanted to add that you might look into having your friend transfer in additional points from another owner that you might then rent those extra points from. That could be a bit of a problem for them, since it would eat up their once a year transfer for just 3 points. I'd talk to them and see if you could rent the extra 3 from their next use year.

I think you were very lucky getting the standard view at BWV last year. Someone may have cancelled at 7 months out to book AKV. I don't think you would be as lucky getting the AKV value room or the BWV standard view - especially two studios.

Since the points are useless to you, your husband really shouldn't be "renting points". He should be renting a reservation from the member.

You could also ask your friend to see about adding on the extra night as a cash reservation. The extra night on cash could be linked to your points reservation and you wouldn't have to switch rooms.

DVC members are often able to get a 25% discount off the rack rate for cash ressies.

This scenario might also open up your choices for which resort you select.

Good luck!

The discount is only supposed to be available to the member who is should be staying in the room.

Can you manage with 1 bedroom for one night & 2 bedroom for 5 nights ?

I took a quick browse of AKV,OKW & SSR point charts and it seems you may be able to get 6 nights done this way and unless my quick calculation is off for OKW 150 would be enough to cover you
for 2 bedroom S - Th and 1 bedroom on Friday and I believe if you startoff in a lockoff 2br there is good possibility that on last day you'd have to just move out of the studio unit of the 2br villa so that may help you avoid a full entire move for your group by allowing you to remain in what is the 1 bedroom portion where you'd still have the convenience of kitchen/living-dining room & laundry. Of course, this scenario would need to be discussed/noted with MS & while there will be no guarantee they'll probaby try to work this scenario out for you. Just a thought and it would be a solution to your points limitation. 1 bedroom villas at OKW are extremely roomy and if you request building numbered higher than 30 there is additional access door to bathroom so guests using pullout sofa in living room would not need to enter master bedroom to use bathroom.

Best wishes & hope things go well with your planning :goodvibes

If you decide to do six nights and change rooms once, I'd recommend changing at the beginning of the trip. If your first night can be Saturday, stay in a 1 BR Standard View at AKV (38 points). Then move to the 2 BR Value on Sunday and stay 5 nights (110 points total). I would not let moving once hinder me from staying another day! Good luck with your choice, and have fun!

Better yet! Why not do a 1 BR Value on Saturday nights (32 points) and THEN move into a 2 BR Standard View on Sunday for 5 nights (115 points). That way, you would have more room for the longer amount of time.

Thanks for all your input. As always it's helpful.

As far as the renting points - our friends give us such a good rate that if I don't use all 150, I'm still ahead of the game cost wise - As I said I really appreicate them offering their points. And if there are any leftover points, I have no problem with them keeping them for themselves.

I was talking with DH last night and I think we'll go for the 2 bedroom the following week. I really enjoyed it last year. Plus, as my DH says, it's not like we're never going to Disney again. My son will alomst be 3 and after his first trip last year I have a better idea of what he likes and doesn't and I know I can plan this trip better to do a bit more and relax a bit more.

I don't want to be far away with the 2 studios - that takes away the fun of traveling together. I didn't know about no 2nd bath in AKV Value (thanks for the input!).

Plus I have more options with a 2-bedroom for 5 nights. All I need to do is put my options in my choice order. We're thinking to try for Wilderness (I know it books fast) first. But I'm pretty sure I can get SSR even at 7 months and that looks like a lovely resort.

As far as BWV last year standard - I'm not sure. My friend made the reservation request online at the 7 month mark of our last day of stay (I know the rules changed) and we got it no problem. I guess we were lucky!

Thanks again for your help.

If they booked a 2BR, standard view, at BWV during F&W.....at the 7 month mark......you hit the lottery.
