Any recommendations for a campground or RV park near or on IH 10 in Mississippi or Alabama for a overnight stay on our way home from WDW? We push into Florida on our first leg going to WDW but need to push further on our way back home. Does that make sense...I'm in my pre Fort Trip fog.

We went camping for Thanksgiving and can't wait to get to the Fort for Christmas.

Thanks!

You might look at Passport America, they have a Web site that list campgrounds. You dont have to belong to look at their site and they list campgrounds in every state.

We must be neighboors as we drive the same distance, we live north of Houston...

Hi Neighbor...we're near College Station.

Thanks for the website. I'm going to check now.

I highly recommend RVParkReviews.Com. They have a huge number of reviews by individual campers rather than some rating's editor. I had a good campground I've used in Biloxi, but GoogleEarth shows that it has been wiped off of the map by Katrina! You might want to be sure to check the dates of the reviews!

there are 2 I've stayed in when I worked in the area down there. In Miss. outside of Biloxi at the OceanSprings/Gautier exit is a place called Journey's end...not a wonderful place but clean and quiet...BBQ place right outside the gates...interesting joint to say the least....in Al. right off I10 as well is a State Park. You exit off the bridge before you get to Daphne. Its closes early and doesn't have site sewer but no problem for a one nighter...no showers either BTW....right on beautiful Mobile Bay!!! watch out for the gators! oh yeah...I stayed at these AFTER Katrina....Journey's end has cable.....Stste Park really is just a place to pull in and sleep unless you want to fish

Meaher State Park is just east of Mobile, AL on Battleship Parkway which runs parallel to the Interstate across Mobile Bay. It keeps getting wiped out by every hurricane that comes by (which is why it is in a state of rebuilding right now).

Never stayed there but plan to in the future some time. It's pretty but basic and somewhat small but it's fine for being close to the Interstate and the city. Here is the link: http://www.alapark.com/Meaher/Camping/

Good luck!

I called Meaher State Park today. There was a recorded message that said the campsites are first come, first serve, no reservations. With only 12 improved sites and my luck, there wouldn't be 2 sites available.

I'm calling again tomorrow to see if I can talk to someone. Will let y'all know.

I haven't stayed there in a few years but they have a awesome campground at the casino in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. That is about 20 miles into Mississippi going east from Louisiana.
Now I haven't stayed there since Katrina but I know the casino is back open so I'm sure the campground is also. The campground and the bathrooms were all brand new when I stayed there.

Hey Sherri!

We are also leaving from Bryan/College Station in less than 2 weeks and are looking to see what is out there other than dry-camping in Wal-Mart parking lots. Any more information you have come up with?

Yes - if its just a stop overnight and crack on the next day, we found the Mississippi Welcome Center at Hancock (Exit 2) to be excellent! I think, technically you are not supposed to stay (as there were signs up but LOTS of people were) but its got pull throughs for RVs, very clean and tidy, lots of trucks parked just over the way, and its patrolled 24 hours. Best of all it was free :goodvibes http://www.visitmississippi.org/welcome/hancock.asp

We went from Katy in Feb 08 towing the TT, stopped overnight there and then cracked on to get to FtW late the following evening.

Someone on this board (sorry can't remember who) recommended a book called The Next Exit which I got, and I have a word doc with all the 24 hours fuel stations between Houston & FtW both ways. If you drop me a PM I can email it to you. It was very very very handy at 1am when the little orange light blinked on :scared1: and DH and I just looked at each other as we were in Middle Of Nowhere, I-10! But my little list told us there was a 24 hr place at the next exit! Phew!

We are driving to Pensacola the first day and staying at the Milton, Fl KOA right off IH 10. Our return trip is my worry. I'm still looking. We've never stayed overnight in a Walmart or rest stop. The state parks in Alabama ( Meaher and Gulf Shore) aren't taking reservations so I'm worried we won't get in.

Still working at it :rotfl:

Thank you Sherri and Bxtx for your replies! :)

4daubers,

When are you trying to make a ressie for? We stay at Gulf State Park about 2-3 times a year usually during very busy periods like 4th of July or Memorial Day weekend. You never need a ressie there unless it's for Memorial Day, Labor Day, or July 4. It has nearly 500 campsites so the probability of getting one is high in other seasons. I never make one except for these dates. They are no longer taking ressies for snow birds (month long rentals from Nov-thru-March). It's about 30 miles south of I-10. We love it there - my DW (very picky and not a camper but a city girl herself) says Gulf has the cleanest bathouses/restrooms she's ever used (with the exception of the Fort, of course).

What dates are you trying for? They're good folks down at Gulf State Park.

Bama ED

Gulf SHores State Park is huge and you should have no problem getting 2 spaces this time of year at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are my hero for the day. We'll shoot for Gulf Shores and if not...we'll keep on going.

Thanks everyone for the help!

You might want to re-think Gulf State Park as an overnighter from Disney. It is a nice park but it is not that close to I-10. My guess is at least 30 minutes from I-10.

I read on another forum that it may be difficult to get in at Gulf State Park without reservations because of winter being the one of it's busiest seasons. Others say won't be a problem. :confused3

May be back to the drawing board....;)

it will be just fine....been there....even in summer holidays i've seen open spots!!! you can also checkout Wales West....its off the beaten path but they have a small Welsh train and give free rides each day to any kids/adults that are staying there as well!!!
