Live from WDW, Nicki & Todd do the F&W and 10 days worth of food!!!

Great reviews! I love your safari pictures, especially the one of the hippo! Glad you had a great time!

Happy Birthday! :bday: I can't think of a better way to spend a birthday than at WDW (ok, maybe Hawaii or Jamaica would be pretty cool too). I am thoroughly enjoying your reviews! Someday I'd love to do a concierge level room! :) Thanks for keeping us updated!

Hey! there's the food! LOL!

I wonder if I need to bring my own coffee with me... (I should change the title of my foodie to "The search for REAL COFFEE!!!!" ) Oh well....I do love strong breakfast tea also... maybe we'll find that.

Ick on the food being left out for a while.... I can't believe they didn't refill some of the popular items, that's just sad. It all looks okay, and edible... :)

Can't wait to hear more! (only 65 more hours til we're on our way!!! yup, I'll be down to the minute soon....LOL! :lmao: )

I hope your hours go by very quickly! If you find great coffee please let me know!

Well HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! The sunrise safari sounds like a perfect way to start the day. Your pictures are amazing. I especially like the hippo eating and the baby giraffe. That is definitely going on my "someday" wish list. Sorry it's too cool for pool weather... I'm sure you'll find something equally awesome to do. Enjoy! And thanks for sharing your trip with us! :goodvibes

Thank you! It has been a fantastic birthday so far but then again I plan on celebrating it until the day we go home! The Sunrise Safari is perfect for picture taking, the bus will stop for as long as you like.

Really loving your reviews. The pictures of the CL lounge are great they took me right back there.
And I'm pleased you enjoyed the Sunrise Safari, it was one of the highlights of our trip.

I have a feeling that we will have to stay AKL CL again for the Sunrise Safari tour, it was that good!

First, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! :bday: What a great way to celebrate! I love your reviews, so keep them coming...popcorn::

Thank you, Jiko is coming up next.

Happy Birthday my friend! Sorry about BOMA, Hoping you love JIKO tonight!:thumbsup2

Thank you girl! Wait until you read about Jiko!

Happy birthday Nicki from one Libra to another! :goodvibes

I have to thank you for the suggestions for Boma breakfast and Grand Floridian Cafe breakfast - both were excellent and as soon as Jay gets the pictures organized I'll start posting our reviews.

As for F&W ... whatever you do avoid the $8.25 cocktail in Poland - it's a poisonous rip-off! And they screwed up the plum tea wine cooler in China, too, and now it tastes like pure syrup ... BLECH!

Have a great trip and thanks as always for updating us while you're living the Disney food love!

Happy Be-lated Birthday Brenda! How was your vacation! I cannot wait to drool all over it! Glad you liked Boma and GFC, we are doing both later this week and I cannot wait!

Thanks for the tip about the F&W, we are headed there tomorrow and I cannot wait!

Happy Birthday Nicki

I hope you have a magical birthday. Love your pictures of the sunrise safari, esp the baby giraffe.:goodvibes Hope you enjoy your dinner at Jiko tonight. Looking forward to more of your reviews . :)

:bday: :drinking1 :cake: pixiedust:

Thanks for the birthday wishes! DH loved the giraffes and when we came back to the room they were right outside our balcony!

Happy Birthday and thanks for the updates! :goodvibes

Thank you!

:bday: Yeah! I LOVE your trip reports!!! :thumbsup2 Count me in popcorn:: As I was reading your Boma review I reached for the phone to call WDW-DINE and cancel our Boma dinner and change it to Kona Cafe.

Honestly, there's nothing that interests me on the Boma menu. I'd hate to go there from the YC and not enjoy our meal. Everyone raves about it, but I know I'm not going to like it. Thanks for your review. I think we'll all be happier at the Kona Cafe. We haven't been there in about 9 years!

Hope you enjoy Jiko and have a wonderful birthday :flower3:
Mare

Thank you! Everything I said about Boma was super honest so if you feel similar to that way then cancel it, I am glad I tried it but we wont go back because the food was not to our tastes. We are going to Kona in a few days....Jiko is coming up next!

:cake: party: :bday: party: :cake:

Happy Birthday!

Thanks for the Boma dinner review. Just last night I was bummed because we don't have it planned for January...not so bummed anymore! I think we'll just stick to breakfast there! :yay:

Thanks for the wishes! DH said that while he did not like Boma he was glad that he got to try it once but please do not book that one again hahahah :rotfl2:

I can't believe I didn't know you started this.....I LOVE your live reviews! Can't wait for the rest!

Thank you and welcome aboard this crazy train!

How can you not love cocomisu! The stuff's amazing, but then again, tiramisu and coconut are two of my favorite things (especially tiramisu--for breakfast :) )

DH liked it if that makes you feel better ;) It just didnt do it for me but I loved the banana bread pudding, that was to die for!

I do the exact same thing.. change things.. change resorts.. change dinning... add, subtract, multiply... :rotfl:
Nice to know someone else in this world does the same exact thing..

Oh no sister you are not alone on that one!

Great reviews! I love your safari pictures, especially the one of the hippo! Glad you had a great time!

Thank you! I have a ton more Safari pictures, if you guys want to see them let me know.

Happy Birthday! Great reviews like always! Thanks for sharing your trip with us

The soup selection was a miss that night, carrot ginger BLECH, seafood something BLECH, Chicken pepper pot (was empty each time I went up to the buffet) and a lentil sausage BLECH. I went for the coconut curry chicken soup. This should be called the red pepper soup, the taste was way overpowering with a back taste of cocount, SUPER BLECH.

I forgot to quote this before...my favorite. :lmao:

Hope you have had a wonderful birthday! :goodvibes

So sorry to hear about the dinner at Boma. We have never had a bad meal there -- breakfast or dinner. It almost sounds like it was an off night for the chef, although I do agree about the bobotie -- I want so badly to like it, but the texture just doesn't work for me. I wish you had been able to try the chicken pepperpot -- I have no doubt that I could live on the stuff.

Amarula is one of my favorite drinks (the African fruit cream that you tried). We mix it with creme de banana and vanilla ice cream for a summertime drink -- mmmmm -- luckily our local liquor store carries it.

The sunrise safari looks like so much fun, but I was not liking the whole food not being replenished thing. That is too bad.

Can't wait to read about Jiko -- tell me it was wonderful!

So today I was pretty useless. After the Sunrise Safari we were back in our room by noon and DH took a nap. I then laid down with him and fell asleep until 4pm!

Let me rant a bit first. I had to book one night at rack rate CL and the next 3 nights at the 40% off code which gave me 2 reservation numbers. We did keep the same room and hung the Do Not Disturb sign on the door. The door was locked and deadbolted. Mousekeepers came by at 1ish and tried to get us to check out. I said that we were not checking out, we just re-checked in and kept the room and we did not need mousekeeping today. At 3pm they came by again, DH was cranky because they woke him up twice and he is still in a lot of pain and he is trying so hard to relax so I ignored him ;), also we missed lunch and he was hungry and basically acting like a child :rotfl: I wish that you could have one reservation number and have the different days priced out so you did not have to do this silly check in and check out business. Ok I am finished, thank you for allowing me to get this off my chest! :rotfl:

We both fell asleep and woke at 4pm, just in time to shower and dress for dinner at Jiko. I picked this because it was my birthday, it was in our hotel and because I am the planner and what I say goes :rotfl2:

We went downstairs at 5:10 and tried to check in, we were the only ones there. The CM said they will not take our names until 5:20. Ok fine, then she proceeds to take about 6 other parties that lined up behind me  What the heck is up with that. A few minutes later the same CM that said they could not check us in did just that and gave us a pager. They were also taking walk ups. There was a young couple from England (the accent gave it away :thumbsup2 ) and they were really cute, they were a walk in, were given a pager and sat next to us in the bar. Their pager went off the same time ours did and the CM said they cannot be seated because he was wearing a tank top and had his tattoos exposed and he would need to go upstairs and change or purchase a shirt from the gift shop. He asked why they did not tell him that when he checked in....which I agree...why make them wait??

So anyways we were seated in the far back of the restaurant and had a huge view from the window that run along side the place. I was given a birthday button and a card signed by the staff.

Our server was Dawn and she was fantasic. DH is not a wine drinker although he wants to try it so Dawn brought out some red and white wines and he settled on a African Pinot Noir (sp?) and he really enjoyed it. I thought it was so sweet that she let him sample all different kinds before he settled on one.

BirthdayTrip08Sunday102.jpg

I just had a plain old ice tea

BirthdayTrip08Sunday103.jpg

DH ordered the Field of Greens salad with a lemon dressing and it was amazing. The greens tasted like they were just picked from a garden, tons of veggies and croutons and the dressing was light and tart and so clean tasting, just awesome!

BirthdayTrip08Sunday105.jpg

I had the Taste of Africa bread sampler with a very spicy Lavosh, nutty tasting Naan bread and toasted pita with a Kalamata Olive dip, Tomato bean dip and a Pesto Herb dip (none of these were like the ones at Boma). This was amazing and DH fell in love with it. All the dips were fantastic, the olive was DHs fav and I loved the sweet tang of the tomato one. The breads were all wonderful but the spicy lavosh is a hidden killer, the heat kicks in after you eat it! At this point DH was head over heels in love with Jiko and said that it was the best place we have ever eaten at in WDW. He said Jiko is worth a trip out of the way, and I agree!

BirthdayTrip08Sunday107.jpg

I knew I wanted the filet with red wine reduction and macaroni and cheese but DH was torn between the shrimp, pork or filet. Dawn told him the Shrimp was super spicy, 5 on a scale of 5 for heat and the pork was a 4 on a scale of 5. DH decided on the filet too and boy was he glad he did. I had mine medium rare (cooked perfectly) and DH had his medium well (again cooked perfectly. We cut these steaks with a butter knife they were that tender. The sauce was so fantastic and the mac and cheese was unlike anything I have ever had before, all three items together complimented each other perfectly, like they were made to go together.

BirthdayTrip08Sunday108.jpg

Dawn also brought out a sweet corn bread and a grain bread with tandori butter. Again, just perfection on a plate!

BirthdayTrip08Sunday109.jpg

We both are members of the clean plate club tonight but DH did have to help me out and eat the last 3 bites of filet for me! DH and I agreed, Jiko kicked Yachtman in the tush!

Of course we had to have dessert, again Dawn was so helpful and suggested the pistachio creme brulee and the lemon curd with sour cream ice cream, blueberries, pomegranets (sp?) and fruit nut biscotti. OMIGOD these were so good.

My only experience with creme brulee was not a good one, Chefs de France burned the top but Jiko did it just right. Light and creamy, just enough rich chocolate on the bottom, wowza it was good!

BirthdayTrip08Sunday110.jpg

The other dessert was so light and refreshing, the lemon curd was just sweet and tart enough, the blueberries and poms were so sweet and yummy and the sour cream ice cream was awesome! Would def get this again!

BirthdayTrip08Sunday111.jpg

I have a feeling this dinner is going to be the highlight of our trip, it was top notch from beginning to end, everything was just perfect and wonderful and relaxing. Super quiet and calm dining room, no kids that I saw, very helpful server! LOVING IT! I just cannot rave about this place enough :thumbsup2

I forgot to quote this before...my favorite. :lmao:

Threw that one in just for you babe!

Hope you have had a wonderful birthday! :goodvibes

The Amarula is wonderful, as I type this I am sipping on one right now! I will have to check our local store and get me some!

So glad you had a great birthday dinner at Jiko! :goodvibes

We really enjoy Jiko and really do think it's worth making time for ... one of the best restaurants on property in our humble opinions. :thumbsup2

MickeyNicki, Thanks so much for the GREAT reviews! Would you please describe the Zebra Dome for me? We are going to AKV in March and I am curious.

Thanks!

So what does tomorrow bring for us? Wake up when we feel like it, have breakfast in the CL lounge and then it is off to F&W for a day of snacking. We have dinner ressies at Fultons, KatMark pics of those amazing crab claws has DH in a drooling fit so I have to feed the poor man!

Stay tuned and thanks for reading so far!

Wow! The best place you've ever eaten in WDW?? That is high praise!! :worship: I'm so glad you had a terrific b-day dinner. I just changed part of my December reservation to include 3 nights at AKL and now Jiko is officially on the list. And I think I'll be ordering up just what you had! :cloud9:

Sounds absolutely yummy!!! and I really like the b-day card they gave you :goodvibes

Couple of questions, DS would like to know if the mac & cheese was creamy (and any other descriptions of it) and do you think the red wine sauce could be served on the side?

Excellent reviews as always!

I agree with you 100% on that one! Jiko is the best!

MickeyNicki, Thanks so much for the GREAT reviews! Would you please describe the Zebra Dome for me? We are going to AKV in March and I am curious.

Thanks!

They have a very thin white cake on the bottom with a kahlua tasting mousse on top, covered with white chocolate and dark chocolate drizzle. If you order room service they have a giant one for $8 but we have not done that :rotfl:

Yes I swear it is the best place we have dined at so far and we have tried almost all of them! DH now wants to try Citrico's, Narcoossee's and Cali Grill....and then I reminded him that he made me CANCEL Cali Grill and he better not bring that up to me again! He laughed and said, Next time Nic, we need to save something for next time....let me tell ya if I didnt love him so much I would leave him in the HM since they always have room for one more!

Sounds absolutely yummy!!! and I really like the b-day card they gave you :goodvibes

Yes they can serve the red wine sauce on the side with no problem, Dawn asked us if we wanted it that way or the regular way. The mac and cheese was very light on the "sauce" and very creamy and wonderful, not a super strong cheese flavor but not a fake cheese taste either....totally amazing stuff!

I'll be waiting (and sweating and worrying :scared: ) that he likes it. I hate recommending places because everyone's taste is so different. But you've convinced me to try two new places next year--Spoodles and Boma (breakfast). And now you have me looking at Jiko. DH is ready to kill me and we don't go for 11 months yet and I've already changed places three times! :rotfl2: I told him it was your fault--hope you don't mind. ;)

Happy birthday Nicki - your dinner sounded wonderful!
Unfortunately we won't be running into you this year, we're going to have to cancel our trip :( and postpone til a date yet to be determined. DH's ankle is just too bad for him to make the trip and really enjoy it.
So, enjoy the F&WF and Fulton's for us! (PS - have a Mai Tai at Fulton's, they are the BEST!)

:yay: :yay: :yay: :yay: :yay: I'm SOOOO glad you enjoyed JIKO as much as we did!! Honestly no other signature restaurant can compare!:thumbsup2

OMG, your dinner looked so good. I dont even like macaroni and cheese but that picture and your description made me want to try it. :goodvibes

Hoping you'll try the cheese place, greece and Louisiana at the F&W festival so I can see pics. Oohh and sushi at japan and shrimp at Australia oh I guess just about everything :yay:
