Ever wonder, what the point of school is, if you cant learn what you NEED to learn?


For example.
I KNOW for a fact that i am going into the culinary division. Its who I am..i cant describe how I know this..but...


When i signed up for taking cooking classes at my school, i didnt get them, yet people who just want to eat in class got in.

I dont see how thats fair, but hey thats life, but then I got thinking...

Whats the point of school, if i dont take the classes that actually apply to my future life?


Do you ever get that feeling?
Maybe its just me.



Ever been denied a class that you absolutely WANT to take that applies to your future, and didnt get it?
How did you feel?


For me this is the 2nd time ive been denied this class. (4th if you count semesters)

I'm going to be an author, I KNOW it. And I can't take a creative writing course. They're only open to seniors, and I'm a sophmore.
I'm already writing a book, I've finished 6 chapters, and my goal is to have it finished by may. Then get it published.
THEN when it is published, I will take the hardcover book to the english department and say "DONE WITHOUT YOUR HELP! THANKS FOR NOTHING!" then smile

If I knew what I wanted to do it may bug me.

But I'm still finding even as a sophomore, we are still learning very basic stuff we need to know. It's kind of like when a teacher says 'You don't realize how much you use math in real life', I think that applies to everything.

Besides, I enjoy learning. I get excited if I'm watching tv and all of a sudden they make a remark about something I learned about in school. Even if I found the stuff intriguing or not at the time, I was giddy just knowing I could get the reference.
Because I'm lame like that.

i'm a senior in highschool and a freshman in college (i take college and high school classes at the same time, and i get dual credit hours)

and i can honestly say that everything you need to know about math, science, history, blah blah blah, to function in society you learn by the end of 8th grade.

high school is not about learning book smarts. you already have those.

i take ap psychology. do you think i am EVER going to need to know how an action potention fires? no. i'm not.
i take ap english iii, do you think i'm ever going to need to know anything about jonathan edward's sermon, "sinners in the hands of an angry god"? no. i'm not.

what high school really teaches you is how to interact with other people. it teaches you how to be a student, how to study, how to survive in a group, how to set and achieve goals, etc.

i'm not sure what i want to do with my life. i'm passionate about photography, but i can't really turn that into a lucrative business, i'm passionate about journalism, but i'm not sure. i'm a great psychologist, but i'd drive myself crazy there. my love in life is art, but no one will pay for art when we can't afford our own homes.

high school isn't about deciding what you want to become and taking classes to learn about it. thats what college is for. high school is for teaching you how to be a person.

Actually, I seriously doubt you'll be missing out on anything.
And even if you did, you could ask the teacher what they are and explain that you weren't given the chance to take the classes in middle school.
Honestly though, there will probably be just as many people taking the course in HS who hadn't taken it before.
You'd have to be going to a very intensely OCD with teaching middle school right now to miss anything in culinary tech. In grade 7 I think they used to make chocolates at my school
Which just means melting choc wafers, adding whatever the recipe calls for and shoving them into moulds.

I understand that, I have a brother in college, but you need certain classes from high school in order to get into a culinary institute. Im taking a high school credit class right now, but honestly if i cant get these culinary classes in my record, they will NOT let me into a culinary institute.

Guess what?
You still ahve FOUR YEARS to get those credits.
Seriously, if you're not getting the head start, it doesn't matter.

We don't do credits here till grade 11. I'm not joking. I'm offered one credit course in grade 10, I'll have modern history. And yeah, I'll have a few juniors who will be in that class, but they aren't all 'oh noes, i'm not gonna graduate' because they took bio or physics the year before.
Just because you don't do stuff right away doesn't mean you're doomed.

Nah ours is different.

7th grade...they made

Cinnamon rolls *homemade, not the pillsbury stuff*
Pretzels
coffee cake
banana bread


8th grade is a tad different, i forget what they make thats really cool..but they do this breakfast thingy. Its neat.

Thats actually very true, im sure that someone who wants to take these classes hasnt done them before.
Most people who take them in 7 and 8th grade, do it for free food in the middle of the day. It just bugs me to know that I put it as my 1st choice 2 years, and people who put it as their 2nd got it.

Not only that, but last year, i told my 5th period art teacher about that, and she said "Ill put in a good word for you at the administation desk for next year" and then i get my schedule for this year, i look at it, and they gave me art again, so i walk into the art room and my teachers like "OHH JESS IM SO GLAD TO BE HAVING YOU AGAIN"

So much for putting in a "good word" xD

I know, im afraid that theyre going to pull the same stuff on me next year.

My mom always tells me "dear, we will cross that bridge when it comes" but my problem is, im always used to "being prepared".

I may, but i have this gut feeling...unlike any other.

Okay, if you don't get it in HS you should be marching your little tush to guidance and demanding a new schedule.

They should fix it for you. There'll probably be conflicts in your schedule anyways.
When I got my schedule I was put in Modern History twice, once in FI Mod History and then in English.

having an iep is wonderful.

i override other schedule changes and go to the front of waiting lists. i got my entire schedule changed and my status changed from junior to senior in one, two minute phone call.

Yes, but don't you need to have some sort of "condition" proved by a doctor for an IEP? An IEP is supposed to be there only for those who need it, not because you just want to change classes, or am I mistaken?

I can change classes.
I don't know what IEP is, but I know if i went to student services and gave them a logical explanation why i cant be in that class, then they will just find a class with an open space with it, and print out my new schedule.

They gave me a new locker this year the same way.

I believe IEP is given to special ed students.
Not all special ed students have disabilities.

an iep is an individualized education plan. every student marked as special education has one. as do i. they have their perks, and one of mine is that i override the requests of other students. sped dept gets first pick on everything.

I am pretty sure you are not missing anything important when you don't have this class. I have not personally taken the class, but I had the teacher and they really don't learn much except how to bake, and be safe blah blah blah. I suggest if you are really interested in cooking, instead of getting stuck in a class with a bunch of people that just take it to have an easy class, try finding something outside of school. Ask your parents to teach you how to cook basic things now, and then just start experimenting with it. My friend is also at a magnet school for culinary arts, its a public school so free, but they have special classes that teach you culinary arts instead of how to bake cookies. Good luck :]
