Hi everyone! Just wondering what you all have done to reduce air pressure in your children's ears during take off and landing? My kids no longer use the pacifier which was the best trick I ever used.

Thanks

Gum, lollipops, and Earplanes. You can find kids sized earplanes in the drug aisle of the grocery store -I found ours in Walmart-they are earplugs and have saved us many times;)

I give DS tootsie rolls to eat. He does not chew gum and tootsie rolls are very chewy.:)

decongestant before travel and earplanes (those things have been a God send for us). We used to suffer terribly from ear pain. I wouldn't travel without them. They come in kid and adult sizes and you can buy them at most drug stores, walmarts , Kmart, etc.

If it is really bad during decent which my daughter experiences....a friend told us of a trick that works every time. You ask a flight attendant for two stryoform cups (coffee), have her/him put a bit of steaming hot water into the bottom..just a bit, then stuff paper towels on top so it doesn't leak out then hold the cups over the ears. Instant relief to the pain/pressure.

We've been on multiple flights and we've only had one flight attendant that wasn't willing to provide us with it...(and she was not a very nice person).

I am intrigued- so you put hot H2O in the cup-I'm guessing like an 1/8 C or so? Then put the paper towels in the bottom so it soaks up the water but still steams? Then put it on the ear? So is it like candling ear wax? In case your not familiar -candling is when you put a wax cone in the ear and light the other and it draws the wax out by creating a vaccum(sp). Does that sound right??

We just too my DD2 for her first plane ride 2 weeks ago, I was terrified of how she would do with her ears.
Like the OP we took tootsie rolls and those gummy lifesavers for her to chew on since she is too young for gum.
She had no problems and feel asleep!

We just came back last Sat and I bought a bag of lollipops with us. On the trip down I had these smaller Pooh lollipops and then I forgot to take them out of the suitcase for the ride home. Since we were delayed at the airport because of Hanna, DH bought him Jolly Rancher lollipops which were much bigger and I found worked much better just because they lasted longer. He didn't have any problems at all. It was funny though, I always knew when he needed one because he would start talking really loud!:rotfl: I was afraid of giving him any kind of candy pieces since he's only 4, I'm paranoid about him choking, but the lollipops worked great!:thumbsup2

Earplanes! :thumbsup2 One tip, if you're buying them for kids, get the ones for kids. There are several 'off brands' that say they are universal fit for kids and adults. But they are way too big for kids ears. The only place in our area that sells Kids Earplanes is CVS.

Yes this has been a concern of mine as I suffer from ear pain when flying. Thanks for the tips!

Wow! I had never heard of this! Thanks for enlightening me!!

I guess so. That must be what is does to equalize the pressure. All I know is it is immediate relief....Going from my child screaming pain..to a huge grin. And we have tried everything else..gum, chewy things, sucking on bottles..binkies, earplanes...decongestants. We even got a prescription ear pain relief from the Ped for the problem and this is the only thing that is consistent relief.

The only other thing that has helped is if the pilot makes an awfully slow decent..and that doesn't happen often.

Tootsie rolls, thanks for that tip. My 3yr. old does'nt care for most gummies but loves tootsie rolls.

Our local AAA office sells Earplanes. I think they are 7.99 for members and 8.99 non member. How much are they at CVS?

Our last DW trip 10/07 my DS10 ears stopped up really bad to the point he was in tears nothing we did help and a flight attendent suggested this and it worked immediately. We leave and 10 days I've bought earplanes I hope they work so we won't have to use this trick.

I actually found the "warm water in Cup Idea" in a product on Leaps and Bounds website last night. If you do a search for ear on their website they have a product that you just add warm water too to allievate the pain.

I bought two for our upcoming trip. Unfortunately, the earplanes didn't work for DD..They didn't actually work for me either... must be a genetic thing.
