OMG, I really need to be up in about 5 hours, so that I can get to the vet's office to get our boy's medicine, but it's just not gonna happen. I was a good girl. I went to the bedroom just after 9pm. I had my goodnight call to Corey at 9:30ish. I watched Desparate Housewives, then the news, then Good Fellas, which I set the timer on the tv to turn it off. I was asleep just after midnight, which is really great for me on a Sunday night.

BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP!!!!

I sat up in bed and grabbed my .38. I jumped out of bed and turned on the light. I opened the bedroom door and was ready to shoot whatever was in the house that didn't have at least 4 legs, because Corey is out of town and I am here alone with only the furkids for company. I turned off the alarm. It said that the basement bathroom window was where the problem was. (side note: I would pity the thief that chose to come in there, because they would drop right down into our very oversized cat litter box.) I turned on the light to look down at the laundry room doors, which are just outside of the bathroom and I saw and heard nothing. The phone rang, it was ADT. I was shaking so bad, that I hung up on them. They didn't call me back! What if I had been harmed and couldn't have properly answered the phone?

So, I tried texting and calling Corey, no answer....phone was off. So, I tried Corey's work Blackberry, nada. So, I got on the internet, found the number for and called ADT. They got the cops out here. I found the number for the hotel that I figured that Corey was at and got them to ring her room. At first they wouldn't tell me if she was a guest, I said, "Her name is Corey ***** and we live at (our address) and she works for (company name) I need to talk to her NOW because someone tried to break into our home!" The cops came and luckily, everything looked fine. I wasn't about to go into my finished basement or backyard by myself. :rolleyes1 The cops were very nice about the whole thing, but I have had such and adrenaline rush at this point, I have no idea if I am going to sleep tonight.

I walked the dogs while I talked with Corey. They all seem ok. Our boy is the one most likely to be freaked out by such things. The cats are more quiet than they usually are at this hour. I think that my grey tuxedo girl, who loves me more than any cat should, knows that I am freaked out.

I have often wondered what I would actually do if that alarm went off in the middle of the night and I was here alone. I think I handled it pretty well. I had that gun cocked and ready to blow some b@$%@&d away in just a couple of quick seconds. :thumbsup2

So, here I sit, alone in a house with an armed alarm system again. I did change the battery in the sensor, but it had not given out warning signals about being bad, which it usually does a couple of days before it does anything like tripping the alarm.

I called and left a message for my bosses that I will most likely be late tomorrow, due to this incident. I am going to surf the net and try to call down for a few more minutes and then I will go back to bed again.

I was sleepin' so good.

Wow - I hope you did finally get some sleep. What a scary thing...I am not sure how I would react - you did great!!

I live in a high rise, no basement window, just a balcony.

Good luck getting your nerves back to norm...

I have an alarm system too and when my husband was in Boston, it would like to go off in the middle of the night...scare me to death..

You know the other day I was thinking, before they ban guns, I might get one to have in the house... My husband is not well....and what if.. I want to be protected and not count on a police department in a resort area that may or may not show up in time to protect me.. So, when you said you grabbed your .38, I thought why not... right?

Sometimes they claim a spider can get into the sensor thing and set it off.. can you believe it? I would have my alarm company out today to go over the system with a fine tooth comb and tell me if there is anything out of the ordinary with the system. Do you have your windows done, sometimes the batteries on the windows let go....and then it starts....one window after the next, they usually go around the same time as they are installed around the same time..

Anyway, sorry about your sleep......hopefully you can catch up tonight.

I fell asleep just before 4:00 am. I was up at 9:10 am. I haven't had enough sleep, but at least I did finally go to sleep. I got to work around 10:30 am. I am very tired. Later, I am going to chew someone at ADT out about the lack of follow-up last night.

I know that for some of you, you are going to read this next part and think that I am nuts, but it's the truth.

We have had several ghosts in our house. Corey and I have both seen or smelled them. When I say smelled, there is one that follows both of us around that smells like cigarette smoke. Being that we both have asthma, we don't particuarly care for that smell, but we didn't choose the ghost, it chose us. We have told the ghost that we don't mind if hangs out in our home, but that the smell bothers us. Since telling him that, we haven't smelled him as much.

As I laid there in bed, saying my prayers, thanking God for keeping me, our home, and our furkids all safe, I smelled the smoke. I told him, "If you are here because you think that I need someone to keep me company, you are right. Thank you." The smoke smell became more faint, but lingered until just before I was tired enough to go back to sleep.

When there is trouble on our phone line, it sets our house security system off. Would that apply to your's?

How cool is that! The ghost part , not the being awake until 4 am part (I should know that’s when I got home last night from The Pgh Steeler/ Browns game!).

Anyway I am the same way when my girl is not home, I have to have all the pups in bed with me and I usually leave the lights on downstairs. I don’t know why.

I am happy everything is ok for you today!

Eeeek! Glad you are ok. I believe in ghosts too. Glad you're friendly ghost is keeping an eye on you....or he might have felt a little mischievious and tripped the alarm himself!

Well, I am glad that I have at least two boardies that don't think that I am a total psycho.

Corey and I were discussing the incident a little bit ago. Our neighbor passed away just a few weeks ago. He was retired and had a degenerative neurological condition. His wife was totally devoted to his care. I think a lot of Mrs. S. We never really had the pleasure of getting to know Mr. S, because he really wasn't himself very often over the past 3 to 5 years. Corey seems to think that maybe it was Mr. S that tripped the alarm. I am much more skeptical about it being a ghost, but then again, you never know. If it was a ghost, I just hope that it's much more careful in the future.

WOW! That's scary. I hope if somebody DID get in, they left in a hurry -- well-coated with extra-stinky do-do! It'd serve'em right!

Lindy - I am glad you are safe and that there was no evidence of an intruder.
We lived in a house in FL that my mom and I thought was haunted, so I believe you. The end of our hallway would sometimes smell like perfume, and my mom never wore perfume. I was only 10 at the time and didn't even own any perfume. Lots of other weird stuff happened in that house, too. It was brand new construction, but you never know what has happened on the ground a house is built on.

So two questions for everyone that has posted.

#1 Are you packing heat? Shrek used to be a cop, so yes we are.

and

#2 Do you believe in ghosts and have you ever lived with one. Yes i do, and yes here in Orlando. We had a house with a ghost in the garage! I told him or her over and over that they were welcome in the house, but they never came in, just the garage. :confused3

#1: no, but I am a pretty good shot - having dated a few cops

#2: I believe, have never lived with one...but do feel them occosionally with my line of work. I usually tell them it is alright to leave, that their loved ones will be taken care of.

#1 Are you packing heat? No.. but you think I would.. Father was a cop, brother was a cop..

#2 Do you believe in ghosts and have you ever lived with one. Yes, I believe, absolutely, and not like in Peter Pan, clap if you believe in fairies, but I do believe... I watch that paranormal stuff on TV and those people walking around with all the equipment, like I would do that, not, I would be running to the bathroom every two seconds..
No I have never lived with one, but I have experienced that feeling before...

When my daughter had a cancer surgery, I wanted to be with her in recovery. I had to fight the doctor on this as he said she was an adult and they only let parents of children in.. doofus, I said she is my child... and he said you are right and let me see her.. It is a long story... powerful, but the short version is when I saw her I started to cry, I sat with her and held her hand and was pretty weepy, and all of a sudden I felt a presence.....I smelled perfume I recognized, and I felt like someone hugged me, it gave me strength. I bucked up and pulled myself together and I realized it was my MIL.. not my Mother, who I loved dearly, both of them I loved, but my MIL, who had just passed away recently...

Yes I believe in Ghosts, sorry about the epistle.. and can I tell you all, I love this board.. I love how accepting you are to all of us here... and I think your Moderators here are some of the finest on the Dis.. Hugs you guys.. but darn I need to get a gun.. LOL

No heat...I'm hot enough.

My ghost story:

There have been several incidences where I felt "accompanied". I don't know if it's ghosts, or angels or what but I know I am looked after.

Once I was in my car at an intersection. There was a very large truck waiting to turn left, to my left, that blocked my view of cross moving traffic. When the light turned green I went to go, but for some reason did not. I even did a mental "the lights green, you should go now.." but still didn't. (This in the span of a second or two) Just as I started to wonder why I wasn't moving, why I wasn't responding to this green light...a huge truck came barrelling through the intersection! Had I obeyed the green light I would have been crushed like a pancake.
Shocked, I finally crossed and had to pull over because I realized that "something" had just saved my life.

Another time I was on a train in the middle of nowhere, When I spotted a little boy along side the track. He was dressed like the "little Dutch boy" (of paint fame). He had his finger to his lips and was shaking his head slowly from side to side. He was there as the train moved forward, but when I looked back...he was GONE. There was nothing but open field, no place to hide...but he was simply gone.

Interesting thread...

So two questions for everyone that has posted.

#1 Are you packing heat? We's heavily armed out here in the sticks. We hunt quite a bit and I like shooting sporting clays(

and

#2 Do you believe in ghosts and have you ever lived with one. I don't know -- I've never had any personal experience with one. But there is a very cool local archetypical ghost story -- La Llorona that goes clear back to Spanish colonial times I bet King Louie's grandma knows it even though I bet her version differs on the river involved...
