Taking your own water/beer onboard

I thought I had read on here somewhere that you can take your own bottled water/and or beer onboard. Is this so? Is there a limit to how much you can take onboard with you? Do you take yours in a soft sided cooler and where is the best place to shop for one? Thanks again for your time!

I don't know if there is a 'limit' but in May, we took on 2 cases of water ans a case of beer. We had no problems. We used a rolling suitcase (extra room to bring goodies home) instead of a rolling cooler but I have seen the rolling soft-sided cooler at JCPenney. We used the cooling box in the room and an ice bucket to keep things cold. Our room steward was great about keeping ice in the bucket. Hope this helps!!!

Yes, you are allowed to carry on your own beverages in your carry ons. Whatever you decide to use needs to be able to fit through the xray machine at security. Also, ice is not allowed. I have seen soft sided coolers sold at stores like Target, Walmart, etc...

Hope this helps - enjoy your cruise!

Our limit is just what we think we can drink in a week. :) We bought our rolling cooler at Costco; our local ones (Orlando) carry them in the spring-summer-fall.

We brought a case + of water bottles. Filled a 20 in rolling suitcase, and checked in with our luggage. No problems. We also brought 750 ml/fifth size rum & tequila, wrapped in towels in another bag. No problem.

Even the alcohol we bought in Mexico was allowed in our room - much to my surprise. The only comment was - keep it to three drinks per day :cool1:

The best place to get a rolling cooler is on the disney shopping website. I just brought one and it's got a lovely pic of Mickey. Only issue is pull up handle is short for me. have to bend shoulders a couple of centimetres.

We spent the night before our cruise in Orlando so we had time to shop. I bought a flat of 12 1/2 liters of water and slapped my luggage tag on it. When I arrived at the Disney Cruise Line bus at the airport, the driver took my suitcase and the water. The next time I saw them was when I entered my stateroom later that day. I put a few bottles of the water in the in-room beverage cooler and kept replenishing them each day.

I put a bottle of rum in my day bag and mixed up a few drinks during the cruise. However, I still made sure I had the "Drink of the Day" everyday along with other alcoholic beverages. But it was nice to know I could make up my own drinks if I wanted to.

I forgot to mention, we just got off the boat on Thursday. We were on Wonder, 8/10-8/14.

wow! Great info! thank you everyone for your input and taking the time to answer my question!!

Last month we flew down with an empty carry-on suitcase and prior to the cruise filled it with 1 & 1/2 case beer (in cans so they wouldn't break) and 1/2 case bottled water and 1/5 Captain Morgan (found it in plastic). This way we didn't worry about anything breaking!:thumbsup2 I figured you can't take a cooler with ice in it onboard so no need to pack a rolling cooler - just bring a regular carry-on suitcase so we could use it for souvies on the way home! Well, we DID have the little DCL cooler bag from our last trip so we packed that to bring to the beach. (BTW - those leak - so bring gallon size ziplocks and have your stateroom host fill them with ice for you in the mornings so once the ice melts it's contained.):thumbsup2

That is very helpful. So if you do bring a cooler with drinks - there is no issue at all with getting ice once on board? You just can't bring ice on yourself?

Exactly.

We liked having the rolling soft side cooler because we could zip it during the day and everything stayed very cold.

Plus, we now use it at home ALL the time.

We also have a collapsable rolling cooler (like the ones from Costco & Walmart etc.) but when it came time to pack that puppy had to stay home! Even folded down the bottom end was still like 9" thick and it weighed 5 Lbs!! When you're flying in today's world THAT is huge! If you're driving to the port then it's not a big deal. But if you're flying & trying to get everything into 1 bag per person under 50 Lbs it's really, really hard and something's gotta stay behind! Of course, our vacation was 10 days - if you're ONLY doing a 3 or 4 n cruise then you won't be bringing as much so you would have more flexibility. It depends on your whole trip length how much room / weight you can afford to bring. For me, the rolling cooler would've wasted precious space & weight. We got along fine with our little folding DCL cooler bag that mashes down into NOTHING to pack and probably only weighs 1/2 Lb. I worked out a deal with our stateroom host where I would just hang the big ziplock bag on the outside of our door handle in the mornings and when he came on duty at 8:00 am he would swing by & grab it & go fill it with ice & bring it back!:thumbsup2

The FAQ section of the Disney Cruise site says you can not bring coolers on to the ship. Is it only collapsable/soft sided ones that are allowed? We are about 15 hours away from the Orlando area and driving for this first vacation - will have to see how that goes to know if we will drive in the future. :) I hope it goes well enough as right now it is still easier on the budget than 4 airline tickets.

I found my cooler at Wal-Mart for $20. It is 40 can size and has wheels. I plan to keep beer in that, then keep soda, water, milk in the cooler in the room. DH likes his beer really cold, so I figured it will be best kept in ice.

I was sorry that I brought a soft sided cooler. I was convinced by comments here that the frig in the cabin would not keep beverages cold enough. Well....that frig did a great job at keeping beer and water cold. I took out some of the shelved to make more room.

We ended up getting most of our drinks from the bars around the ship. The prices really weren't that bad. If you plan on drinking heavily, please don't take a Disney cruise (there are other cruise for that type of trip).

That's interesting about the fridge... I was told it would keep things cool if they were put in cold, but would not cool things. But... we'll have our cooler anyway from our WDW days before the cruise, so no biggie for us.

My thing is, while we don't plan to drink heavily, we have a verandah. I want to be able to sit and relax with drinks without having to go to the drink station or bar first. Not heavy drinkers... just lazy ones! :lmao:

not planning on any heavy drinking, just asking for info because I don't wish to pay their prices for beer and drink a specific kind. Thats all..

So is the soft sided cooler better than a small suit case? At walmart, any idea of brand or part number??

We have a disney soft sided rolling cooler (got it from disney website) that we use as our carry-on on the plane and on the cruise. For the plane ride we have our books, mags, ipods etc in it. Then we go to publix near the port to get drinks for the cruise.

Also the 2 cruises we've been on the cooler in the room did not keep anything cold. We tried it the first day both cruises then asked our room host to keep a bag of ice in the cooler for us.

We had to request a real "fridge" as my husband is a diabetic, and the beverage cooler was not cold enough. Fortunately we were able to get one after we left port (request ahead of time) and it kept things nice & cold.

Once we got an ice bucket from room service and set up our in room bar (on the shelf with the ledge & barrier) our state room host kept it stocked.
