I have often watched that show thinking "man, there is no way these people will be able to pay the utilities or maintain this house they're building." Not to mention doing something stupid with it, like these people did. Maybe ABC should do follow ups on these homes to see what they look like 2 or 3 years down the road. Now that would be some good TV.

They actually did one of these homes in our area.(blacksburg,VA) Single mom with MS. She had been a dancer. My sister has MS so i was glad this lady was chosen. It's no easy disease.

Ever since the inception of this show I thought it was a very grandiose piece of showmanship with no forethought as to how these homes would actually impact the recipients. Most of these people can't afford the monthly utility bills on these monster homes, let alone the upkeep and taxes!

ABC thinks they're being so humanitarian by their actions. They would be more humanitarian if they donated their production costs to Habitat For Humanity so more homes of modest but nice means could be built for more people. Yeah....like THAT'S gonna happen.

You hit the nail on the head with that, Deb. But how many people would want to see a bunch of volunteers helping the working poor build a 3 bedroom, 1200 sq ft home for themselves?

I actually like the show, but have always said they are way over the top for most of the people. They should take the money they spend on one of the mansions, and build 3 normal houses.

One thing that the show does, that is not always apparent, they bring a lot of causes to light, such as MS etc. They probably generate huge increases in revenues for these causes just by focusing on them for 1 hr.

It is on tv, so it has to be all grandiose, or it wouldn't still be on tv....

I watched the show the first season when they actually did MAKEOVER's....not rebuild new homes for everyone. I enjoyed watching how they were going to figure out how to add on to an existing home. They did additions and added second levels. They were still wonderful homes...but they fit in a little better in their neighborhoods. I think it was more realistic and gave people ideas for what they may be able to do in their own homes.

It is always the same. If you give some alot of money they will blow it fast. Even some of our athletes. They sign huge contracts and then are broke in a couple of years after they are done playing. We even had a family sue Florida Power and Light, for a down wire that killed a family member. They got like 50 million. Bought a big house and within a few months the elect. was shut off for no payment. Only saving grace here is that they didn't get all the money at once. Money just can't change some people.

Just goes to show you that you can take a pig out of the mud, give him a clean house, but he will still be a pig.

Great show, but I agree, these people couldn't afford this lifestyle before, what makes them think 5 years down the road they will be able to.

I love the show. It is one of my favorites.

People should really learn how to better manage their money then maybe there wouldn't be these issues. A lot of times their mortgages are paid off amoung other things. Some people just make bad choices. It is sad that they are given a great chance to start over and they mess it up.

I'm thinking that, too. Also, I don't believe for a minute that they "surprise" the families when they show up and that clown Ty is screaming at them through the bullhorn. If he came to my house like that, I'd meet him at the door in my underwear with a 12 ga.

Yea, it's funny how when they come running out it's like they were all just sitting at the door waiting for them to show up...lol.

Most of the building is done prior to the show. The walls and such are put together in big warehouses off site.

I wonder about that suprising stuff too. They just all run out all ready to go. Nobody in their pjs???

I used to enjoy the show but it got to where some of the families didn't seem to deserving. Also, most of the time they either pay off the mortgage or give them money to help with the bills. So there is some forethought, but the problem is people like this that take out another mortgage on the home. I didn't read the article but that was my understanding of the situation. People like this that have no concept of good spending habits, you can't help them out of debt. Because they fall right back in it. My former boss was an elderly man who had been in business for himself for years told me the most important thing to remember when dealing with finances is "you can't buy yourself a profit, and you can't borrow yourself out of debt!"

I have seen one go up it took 7 days. They find local builders that need a tax break and donate the house. Or at least thats how the one I saw went up. So I was told. To me show is kind of boring. Sad story and tears, send family to WDW and tears(never enough footage of WDW) tear down house and more tears, build a new house people see house and more tears the end.
