Explain the taste of these fish...please

Ok this sounds like a weird question and it kind of is, but I was hoping someone out there could help me figure out if I like...

Red Snapper or Halibut.

I've never had these before and see them on the menu at Captain's Grille at the YC. I like salmon, flounder, and cod. I do not like blue fish. Do these fish have any similarities to any of these? Do they have a strong taste or mild? Has anyone had these dishes before at the YC?

Red Snapper
I flavorful white fish, fleshy and very good. Can be served baked, broiled, grilled or even fried and taste just great. More flavor than Cod, but not nearly as strong as Blue. I don't eat Halibut so I can't speak to that one, sorry.

Halibut is white, mild, and flaky, and not superfishy. Like snapper it lends itself to a lot of different (and all equally good) preparations. It goes well with lots of different flavors.

Snapper is generally white, flaky, and light -- not fishy tasting at all. It is my favorite fish to eat, along with salmon. Salmon is oilier and has a much stronger flavor, though. (And I'm not really a fish eater).

We eat lots of snapper in Hawaii and it is great. It's also great at the Flying Fish at the BW!

I dont know about Halibut, sorry...

Halibut is also a light, flaky white fish. It's great with many different dressings, from creamy dills, to fruity chutneys. YUM! Crusted with spices or nuts. You can't go wrong. Lots of options.

I'm not sure about snapper, but for halibut think chicken.

According to Wikipedia, Halibut is a flat fish and in the flounder family, you'll probably like it if you like flounder. I like both, but haven't found a salmon I like, it's way too strong for my taste. If that helps.

Last year everyone on the dis made me want to try Creme Brulee for the first time and now it's one of my favorite desserts.

Most "fish & chips" are either Cod or Halibut, so they are fairly similar in texture and flavor.

You may wan to wait until you arrive to decide. You just might get a peak at one or both being served to someone else while you're there.

I would agree with this description of halibut. I HATE FISH, even tuna, but halibut properly prepared (ok, deep fried into chips w/tartar sauce!!!) I do like, it is firm, mild, flaky. If it is over cooked, I could see it tasting more like chicken as another poster described as it dries out & gets kinda firmer.

I think you would really love these fish. Another fish you would probably like is Monkfish. It is a white fish.....that has the consistency of lobster
I don't like "fishy fish" either....salmon, swordfish, etc.

I have never tried monkfish, but now I am intrigued!

And FYI, really good fish will never taste fishy. Come to Seattle and try some really fresh salmon--you will learn to love it! And swordfish is dense, firm, but again, shouldn't be fishy. Can take seasonings like a steak. Yum!

I like both of them. Like the others have mentioned...they are white and have that flakey texture. I do love bluefish, but they are not like bluefish, so don't worry.

That's probably what I'll do. But right now I'm leaning towards the Red Snapper. Gotta start somewhere. I'm hoping to broaden my palate with this trip instead of getting the same old (yummy) standbys.
