Handicapped line?

I'll be going to Disneyland with my friend, who can't stand up for long periods of times, because of his back. If he does, he's in a lot of pain. His doctor said he's allowed to go on rides, skateboard, all that he used to, so it's safe. Problem is, as I've mentioned, he's unable to stand up for long periods at a time or his back really hurts.

Could we use the handicapped line? If so, how does that work? I've never been with a handicapped person, so I wouldn't know.

Is there a certain pass or the such that you have to get, to use the lines, or...?

My brother is in a wheel chair, and we had to a get a pass at city hall. It does not mean a short wait. Some rides you go through the exit, and some you go through the fast pass line. We've actually waited longer in the wheel chair line to get on a ride then the stand by line was! Like IASW and POTC. We've also had quite the wait at the exit, because they only allow so many at a time on that way.

Others like the Buzz ride are wide enough for wheel chairs, and it depends on the CM that is running the ride that day. Most of them would tell us to go through the FP line. On the last day we got a CM who wanted us to wait for the whole line. Which was impossible for my brother (he's also mentally disabled, and does not do well with long waits).

So I don't know how that would work if he's not even in a wheel chair. I wouldn't expect a pass to the front of the line with little wait though. We certainly never found it to be that way (of course we'd of much rather had my brother be "normal" and be able to stand in line anyway!).

I really don't get the doctor's orders skakeboarding is ok but standing up is not ok? For endurance issues Disney will recommend an ECV or wheelchair. The best thing to do is go to City Hall and explain the situation. He will not be allowed to use the handicap line without a pass from Ciy Hall if he is not in a wheelchair.

I've been to DLR with a friend who is in a similar condition: Due to problems with his feet, he can't stand or walk for long periods of time. We've often gotten him a wheelchair, whether at DL or WDW, at the entrance to each park. We've never had to stop at City Hall to get a pass, just always had to go the handicap entrance. As said, that's often the exit or fastpass line.

More often than not, it seemed like the wait was shorter when we went with the wheelchair option, although not always. But then, my friend was able to transfer to and from the wheelchair and didn't have to wait for a special ride vehicle.
