How does DME and the luggage check with the airlines work? We always rent a car at the airport but are thinking of going without on our next visit. How does it all work? Also, do most people tip the driver? :confused3

You may want to check out the 'stickies' at the top of this forum. But, I will give you the 'readers digest' info.
You need to book DME with whomever you booked your resort with. Then, about a month before you are to leave, you will get an info booklet, with 2 yellow luggage tags per person on the reservation, in the mail. The booklet will give you all the info you need...how to get to the checkin counter, when to expect your checked bags in your room etc.
Tag the checked bags with the yellow tags, hand them over to the airline when you checkin at your home airport.
Fly into MCO...get off the plane, head to Level 1, Side B (you arrive on Level 3...the booklet gives you directions). Checkin at the counter, go to the appropriate resort bus line....get on the bus. When you get to your resort, get off. You aren't expected to tip the driver unless he stows luggage for you underneath the bus, or provides you with a better than expected experience.
Your checked bags (if you tagged them) will be taken directly from the plane to your resort. They should arrive in your room up to 3 hrs after you checkin at the resort.
Now...for your return..if you are flying home on a 'participating airline' (Airtran, Alaska, American, Continental, Delta, JetBlue, Northwest, United), you will be able to check your bags right at your resort, at the RAC/DME desk. You will also get your boarding passes...it's pretty much the same thing as curbside checkin, just a lot further away. If you are not flying one of those airlines, then you just go to the DME bus stop with your bags at the time you have been told (usually a note is left the day before under your door). Your bags will go underneath the bus. When you get to MCO you check them as usual.
Hope that helps a bit...I'm sure I've left something out.

I think you answered everything-Thank you! I thought we had taken DME before, but DH corrected me and said it was Mears so I wanted to be sure how it worked. :thumbsup2

While DME is owned by Disney, it is operated by Mears. But, it is NOT the Mears you remember. I took Mears once, back in '99.....never again!!!

Good to know, because I didn't particularly have fond memories of our Mears experience. Thanks again for the info! :thumbsup2
