Taking stroller on airplane??

In October my family and I will be traveling to DW. We will be flying with Delta so we know that we can only have 1 checked bag for each person which cannot be heavier than 50 pounds? My nephew will only be 2 then and we would like to bring our own stroller instead of paying to rent one everyday. How would we go about doing this? Will we have to count it as a piece of luggage and pay the extra money for it? Or since he is only 2 does he get his own piece of checked luggage? Since we are paying the money for his ticket we figured he would get a piece of checked luggage also
I was just wondering if anyone knew how this would work out for us? Or if there is a way to rent one once we get to Disney. I know you can pay money each day to do so. But we will be there for 9 days and that is going to add up to rent one each day. So we are just trying to figure out the best way to do this.

I've flown numerous times, never with this situation but have observed, and I have seen many people with strollers, and they just take them at the gate before you board and put them underneath, then they come off first at your destintation so you get them right when you get off the plane. I would also ask this on the family boards just to be safe. Have a wonderful trip!

We are also flying Delta, and if I'm not mistaken - you can check 2 bags per passenger. (I got this info off of their website) You can also have 1 carryon bag PLUS one personal item (which includes a purse, diaper bag, laptop, camera case, etc.). The website also says that strollers are checked for free and are not counted as standard baggage allowance. You can also opt to gate check the stroller so that you can use it right up until you get on the plane and it will be waiting for you when you get off. (so I've heard - I've never actually flown with a stroller yet!) I plan on gate checking mine. Look on the Delta website under baggage - special baggage- infant and childrens items. As long as you dont need it too much leading up to your trip, have it mailed to your resort a few days before you go. Sounds funny but i've seen it done.

My guess is that you will have to check it as baggage. Should not be a huge problem.

Thank for everyone's responses. I had also posted this on the transportation board and the answer seems to be that you can gate check it. And they gave me a link to a bag that cannot be mistaken for gate check to put the stroller in..lol...Here is the link if anyone else is interested

We went to the Dominican with DS when he was 18 months and took the stroller right to the gate. It was really handy to have it the whole time. DS didn't spend much time in it but rest of our stuff did. We plan on taking it again when we fly in a couple of weeks. The only caution I would have is to have a compact stroller. I don't think they allow big travel system strollers to be checked at the gate.

It depends on what type of stroller you're planning on bringing. IF it is a "regular" stroller, it will be checked as "luggage". If it is an "umbrella" type stroller, you can leave it at the gate and it is stored in with the stewards/esses. One thing to also note, if you own a Maclaren (umbrella type) stroller, it is FAA approved as a "carry-on", and since they are the more pricey stollers ($115 for an umbrella type), they are easy theft targets and it may be wiser to use it as a carry-on.

I didn't know this. I have a Maclaren and I would love to be able to use it as a "carry on" if possible. I have a double, however. Does this matter? Do you have a website with this information that I can read more about?

as a frequent flyer with toddlers I know (Yes, even Delta) you get 2 checked bags per TICKETED person, up to 50 pounds each, one carry on bag that much fit int he overhead compartment or under the seat in front of you (But on some smaller planes these will need to be gate checked as well) , one personal item, such as a purse, diaper bag, laptop bag, etc and that your stroller, if gate checked does not count towards any of those allowances. I've travelled with an umbrella stroller, my graco system, my sit and stand and a my graco double and the same went for each of them. Also, if your child is ticketed, you may bring an FAA Approved car seat for them (Again, not counting as a carry on or personal item).

So, in theory, if you and your spouse are traveling with a ticketed child you can check in 6 bags, carry on 3 bags, plus a lap top, diaper bag and purse, settle your child in their car seat and gate check a stroller.

Plus if you are traveling with a child under the age of 4, you get to board the plane first. Depending on your child, that may or may not be a good thing. If you are traveling with a car seat it is a VERY good thing. If you need to, one stay off the plane with the child for as long as possible and the other pre board with the car seat. Mine LOVE to travel and love their car seat, so I always pre board and get them settled ASAP. They also know that a tootsie pop will come as soon as we get ready for take off (Not when we push back from the gate, but right before we actually take off) if they settle quickly.

You may want to tie a colorful scarf on your stroller handle so you can spot it. One flight, there were 4 families with stroller and 3 were the same. MIne was the one with the bandana on it, so I saved a few seconds trying to find mine. ALso, if you choose to gate check your stroller (Or anything for that matter) don't rush to get off the plane first. It usually takes a few minutes for them to get the gate checked items unloaded. If you can, get to the left side of the plane and watch from there. It is exciting for the kids to watch, too.

We gate check our stroller. They will tag it as you get on the plane and put it in storage and it is there in the hall as you get off the plane. It's like little fairies deliver it magically!!

I know this may sound like a silly question, but did you have a bag for it? I have a question about this posted on another thread. My Maclaren Twin Triumph is very compact, but the Maclaren stroller BAG is HUGE!! I didn't know if I would have any trouble gate checking it if it's in this huge bag.

Two caveats: First, you can't "just take your stroller to the plane and gate-check it". You need to get it tagged by the Gate Agent first. Please do NOT wait until the plane starts boarding to do this.

Also, while it is not yet on Delta's website, effective 5/1/08 the baggage allowance is reduced to ONE checked piece per ticketed passenger; additional luggage will be $25 per.

If you have a single stroller you can take it with you, doubles have to be checked. My Maclaren is a single umbrella (the Volo) and is able to be put in the overhead, provided it's in a "bag".

The JL Childress Standard & Dual Stroller Travel Bag holds our Jeep 3-wheel stroller neatly (which is pretty big in itself, so it should hold many other types/brands of strollers).
