I'll call the doctor also but I also wanted some other feedback, since this is a new doctor group and I'm not totally confident in them yet (she's hasn't even been in for a doctor visit).

My 10 yr. old dd starting menstruating (sp?). The pain wasn't terrible but she was aching. Her previous doctor told me she had all the signs and that she'd be getting it within the year. 9 months later she has it.

She's so young, but she weighs 70-80 lbs not heavy but very tall and thick.

I'm wondering what kind of pain releiver would be safe. Any ideas?

Of course I'll check anything out with the Doctor but again I only wanted to get ideas.
Thank you!

Naproxen Sodium, so long as she does not have a problem with NSAIDs.

My dd weighs about 78lbs she is 10. Her Dr. just told me the dose of advil for her is 360 mg but if you do pills it would have to be 400mg and that is ok. This was for headaches but advil is good for cramps too.

Advil works better for me than for some others, but you should talk to your doctor, read the labels, and find what works for her. What has your doctor recommended in the past for aches and pains - my eight year old has been prone to migraines since three, and she swallows one adult Advil for pain per the Doctor (most of the migraine medicine is, IMO, too drastic for an eight year old IF the pain can be managed with OTC medication, which, to date, has been the case. When she hits her hormone years, I suspect we will have perscriptions.

Try Children's Motrin - I still use it if things get bad, works great. I think because it's liquid, it gets into the system a little faster. Something I discovered as a teen with a lack of options one day when I downed a sample sized bottle. By college, all my roommates were swearing by it too after laughing at me at first. I can always tell a difference within 10 -15 minutes.

childrens motrin if she can handle nsaids on her tummy and has no other issues. its works great for these types of issues.. hope she is feeling better..

Naproxen Sodium, so long as she does not have a problem with NSAIDs.

I second Aleve (Naproxen Sodium). I take 2 in the morning and 2 at night (same as prescription strength). Ask your doctor if that would be okay for dd. Best of luck!

We find that ibuprofen works the best at my house. DD15 gets severe cramps and finds that she has to take ibuprofen at the first twinge of pain or it gets so bad she can't keep the meds (or anything else) in her tummy. She only weighs 95 lbs, so usually one tablet will do it for her.
....makes me want to sing, "I enjoy being a girl....!" :scared:

I also drink the liquid children's Motrin. I weigh in at about 180 so I double the dosage for the 90 pound child, and it REALLY works for the female aches! They have dosages down to 40 pounds I think, so your daughter won't have a problem with the dose.

I hope your little girl is doing okay. She is so young to be dealing with that nasty Aunt Flo every month.

Not a medication, but I just wanted to add to make sure she's drinking alot of water because this can go a long way in relieving cramps. A heating pad may help, too.

You should really make an appointment with the doctor. A good doctor should not give advice over the phone without having ever seen the patient.

DD increases calcium, magnesium, and potassium rich foods a few days before and during her cycle. She takes Children's Motrin if she is cramping. Just a side note, talk to her Dr. because my daughter is still taking a very small dose of the the Children's Motrin and it still works. Her Dr. recommended the smallest dose possible. We haven't had to up it yet but she turns 16 this year and I am sure we will. She started when she was just shy of 11. PS.;) Ice Cream!

DD started her periods when she was 8 yrs old being fat doesn't really have much to do with when they start it's just the fact they mature faster now all those growth harmones an enhancers put in the ground an given to cows an pigs etc transfers over into the food to some degree an that causing the kids to mature at a faster rate.

Now if only the preservatives would keep us from gettin wrinkles as we age...

Thanks everyone.
We have only used Childrens Motrin or Childrens Tylenol for fevers and such never needed it otherwise. I'll keep using the childrens stuff. If it doesn't work I'll try midol. It used to work for me.

Dyna-I know being fat doesn't have to do with it (although she's not fat), I only added her weight thinking she is ready weight wise for motrin, midol, etc. LOL Geeze eight is young.

I was nine when I got mine, my dh's sisters also developed very young. So I guess it's in the genes on both sides. The problem is she's also very immature. She's just not ready for this. Although I try to make it a very exciting experience. But once you get it it doesn't seem so exciting.

One more question. I guess swimming is out, right? We were in Florida when she got it and couldn't use the great pool at the hotel. That didn't go over great. When do girls where tampons?

I'll have to remember the water and ice cream. One thing I've learned mine are much worse when I eat fried foods.
Thanks again ladies

Our pediatrician prefers Tylenol to Motrin but either way be careful not to overdose - either one causes liver damage if taken too much or too frequently.

they make teen or slim tampons I believe. Maybe check at someplace like Walmart or Target that would have a wide variety?

I fear I'm going to be in the same boat within the year w/ my DD. I'm not looking forward to it at all! I was in 5th when I got mine but I was hoping she'd hold out until HS. LOL

Thanks everyone.

My DD's pediatrician told me it was hereditary, to expect my DD to start around the age that mine did. At her last appt. she said to expect it in a few months when she'll be around 12 or 12 1/2 so she'll be just a little younger than I was.

If you want something to help explain things to your DD a really good age appropriate book is "The Care and Keeping of You". It's an American Girl book, I bought it for my DD when she was 10. I know you didn't ask, but I thought I'd throw that out there in case it was useful.

I would check with the doctor before giving her Naproxen...the bottle specifically says for children under twelve, ask a doctor.

I love Naproxen for my headaches. :goodvibes
