Working at home

Who works at home and what do you do? I need to think of a job I can do at home since I have four small children.

I work at home and I do medical transcription - been doing it at home for over 8 years now and I love it! :surfweb: You have to be very disciplined to work at home though and it's not for everyone - life tends to get in the way...

I'm a grant writer and I have my own business. I have (mostly) non-profit clients that pay me a retainer to research and write their grants. I have a 9 month old DD and wanted more flexibility so I started this business. I did work for a state agency for 10 years writing and administering federal grants so I have some experience. I love what I do and it's managable for me. I can work when DD is napping but most of my writing is done at night when DH is home and DD is in bed. I think this kind of work would be a bit difficult with 4 kids, especially if they are all home with you during the day. While I am super grateful that I am home with DD and I love what I do, there are definitely sacrifices. Many weekends are spent researching and writing and nights are not my own either. It is totally worth it to me but as another poster said working at home takes dicipline and it's not for everyone.

I'm also a medical transcriptionist, have been for about 15 years. Check out mtdaily dot com.

Do you have to have a degree to do this? I do medical transcription at work..been there only for a few months but have been in office work for 15 years. I would like to do transcription at home on the side....is this something I can do??? I like medical transcription....do you mind if I PM you??

I have enrolled in Medical Transcription courses online about a year ago. Unfortunately life has gotten in the way and I have not been studying. After the summer when my youngest attends kindergarten I will resume my studies. You definitely need to be disiplined and have alot of time to dedicate to it.

I did tons of tutoring, but that's kind of specific.

Would you consider sales-- Tupperware, Avon, Pampered Chef...?

My businesses have morphed over the years as I have been an entrepreneur for a long time. I used to co own a thrift store. I have been selling on ebay (for 10 years) and Craigslist. I used to do home daycare. Now I teach kids hula and sewing.

Do you have a skill that you can make into a business?

I'm curious about this as well. How do you study for this?

There are several schools (most business colleges) will have an MT program. I did mine quite a few years ago now (I have about 18 years experience in total - 8 working at home). You need to take classes in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, typing (of course;-). It's good to have a strong backgroudn in spelling and punctuation.

I know there are tons of opportunities available - in the US and in Canada - it depends on your experience level. I know there are companies that hire new grads, etc., but you would expect to start out making less in the beginning as you learn (as with any job), but you can certainly make a comfortable living if you're good at what you do and progress to better income.

If you want to ask my questions by PM, feel free. Keep in mind that I did my training in Canada, but have worked for several large US hospitals. A good guide for approved courses would be the AAMT (American Association of Medical Transcriptionists). They have chapters in most big cities and really promote mentoring, etc.

I don't mind :thumbsup2

I have a degree but its not in transcription, I started transcribing because I wanted to be home with my kids. I was trained in a hospital and worked therefore 2 years, then started for a couple of the docs at home, and eventually went with a nationwide company.

What schools are reputable for medical transcription?

I was trained by a "little old lady with a big red pen", but there are companies out there that you can learn at home with, and I know there is one in particular that if you score high enough on their final exam then one of the big companies with pick you up. I have a friend who went through this and she had no trouble getting a job. If you want to PM me I will find out the name of the school and how much it costs, I think its around $1500 but not positive.

The website mentioned above has a few ads referencing 6000 lines per week and a bonus ($50) for making that minimum, but all seem to otherwise reference a pay amount "per line" but don't say what that is. What is a typical amount paid "per line"?

I was also a stay at home mom and did home parties for extra money. I enjoyed getting out of the house at night for a few hours for some adult interaction. There are many out there to choose from - depending on your interests. If you're not into the whole party aspect, most of them also do fundraisers. I worked with lots of local businesses (day cares, preschools, sports programs, dance studios, etc.). I also recruited others into the business to supplement my income.

I currently work from home as a legal secretary. I was looking for a wahj and emailed one of my old bosses for a reference. Well instead of a reference from him I got a job. :cool1:

I am starting my 3rd weeks and loving it.
