Kid's spending money

We plan on giving each of our three kids a set amount of spending money during our trip.

On a trip last year to Mt Rushmore, we tried this and it seems they are more careful in their spending when they know how much they have total to spend during the trip!

Do the parks take any kind of gift cards? I was wondering if I could just get the kids some kind of gift card so they can keep track of their own money?

:)

I believe that you can put some money on the kids room keys when you check into your resort. Maybe others can verify.

You can get disney dollars or maybe disney gift cards that will be taken. You cant put an amount on 'each' key. You can put either a credit card or a certain amount of cash on the 'room' and then allow them to use the room key to charge. Some CM's will balk at doing the cash because they dont want to deal with cash, but it CAN be done.

We use disney dollars and it works great. The kids are really careful with how they spend their money and it seems to last the whole trip as they realize how fast the money can disappear. When the kids were younger DH and I paid the tax..it was easier for the kids to figure out how much money to count out.

Money on the room key is a good idea. Love the Disney dollars too. How old are your kids? Mine are 4, so they dont understand the concept of money and spending. The only thing they completly understand about it is, when its gone, its gone. So I am going to get them Disney dollars, so they can actually see and count how much money they have.

Another idea is a Visa gift card. My nephew got a couple of these for his 12th birthday. He loved the idea of going to a store and paying with a credit card.

We got the Disney dollars at a Disney store. You can also get them at the resorts. My kids the first time we used them were 4 and 7. It really helped with the "I want/ Can I have.....?" question, they finally realized they could if they had the money. Of course there is still some guiding needed, with the "do you realize if you buy that you will be out of money and you can't buy anything else this trip". Even the 4yr old understood that when his $ was gone that was it. No more stuffed animals etc.....It really worked great :). It was great to hear the 7 year old say "$10 for that Mickey WOW that is expensive:) " They will be 10 and 8 when we go again and we will again use the dollars just to avoid the question:laughing:

We also did the Disney Dollars and tried to encourage our daughter to conserve. She really learned a lesson when she couldn't buy a Pluto at the end of the trip because she had run out of money. Funny, tho - she didn't even want one on the next trip. :rolleyes1

Last trip the kids had no problem spending our money. This trip we are giving both kids their own cift card with their spending money loaded on it. Yes, they are much more careful about spending when they are spending their own money instead of mom & dad's!

I'm going to be checking out these Disney dollars. This sounds good.

Last trip I went to my bank and got the kids each a Visa gift card for $100. They each had their own card plus whatever allowance and birthday money they saved. They kept up with how much they spent and what they had left. I learned a lot about my children by watching the choices they made. One needed an extra suitcase to bring home all the small toys she bought (definately a "more is better" kind of girl). The other jotted down notes about what she liked and where she saw it then spent her money on a few really nice things she totally loved and enjoyed for months afterward.

Whatever method you choose, it's good for your kids to start learning about managing money and it may save you a bundle in the long run.

Another vote for Disney dollars! One of the advantages to disney dollars is that if you are planning your trip long enough in advance, then grandparents and aunts/uncles can give the kids Disney Dollars for their birthdays, Christmas, etc.

My sister started planning her Oct '06 trip at least a year in advance. So I was able to give the kids disney dollars for Christmas and their birthdays. Their grandparents also bought them some. So by the time they went to WDW, they had a nice stack of cash to use for souvenirs.

I'll second what the other posters mentioned. They seemed to be much more careful in asking/buying things when they were paying for it themselves.

We give our children Disney dollars and pins for doing extra chores. They are still responsible to do their normal chores (make their beds and keep their rooms tidy, empty the dishwasher and clear the dinner table).

Their extra chores can be anything from changing the cat box to polishing furniture for me. If they perform extra chores, we pay $2 a chore. If they do 5 extra chores a week (the maximum) they earn $10 + a pin to trade at the parks.

We pay out extra chore money in Disney dollars. This works out like a dream for us. :) I get extra help around the house, they learn the importance of earning money and they have their 'own' spending money at WDW.

I buy the pins on Ebay in lots of around 10 or so. I usually pay about $2.25 a pin. I never really pay attention to what is on the pins, just that they are traders and cheap in price. :) This helps in that the kids actually want to trade those pins and I don't end up buying traders at the parks.

My kids enjoy Visa/Mastercard gift cards, but you need to know your balance at all times. If they only have $5.34 and an item is $5.50 the card will decline. This is frustrating for younger kids and parents. I don't want to take time out of my vacation to 'balance' my childs gift card and younger children don't have quick enough math skills to perform the balancing on the go.

One last tip.... our kids used to be the annoying "Are we there YETTTT?" kids. A lady at dh's work taught us this tip: give your kids a roll of quarters before you leave home. Each time they ask are we there yet, they have to give up a quarter. Once you reach your destination they get to keep whatever they have left. This worked like a gem when they were littler, now we give them 10 $1 bills and it works very well. They were willing to part with a few quarters, but not a whole dollar. :rotfl:

Ditto CrazedDisFan- Disney bucks are a wonderful motivator to get my kids to help out around the house. Not to mention they are beautiful! They are in color and have different characters on them. I'm going to use one in a scrapbook layout :lovestruc

For Valentine's Day, my kids are each getting some Disney bucks, a pin, and some Disney jibbitz for their Crocs. It's all Disney, all the time around our house right now! :rotfl:

Same here!! Off to the Disney store this morning to pick some VDay stuff up!

I purchased a Disney Gift Card for my 5yo nephew. He understood how much was on the card, and he could buy ANYTHING he wanted but when the money was gone it was gone. He had a great time going up to the counters with his items and giving them his "credit card".

I found he was a bit more picky about what he wanted to buy and spent time really thinking about it before making a final selection.

The CM's at the stores always laughed when he went up like a little man to pay his bill...he even offered to pay for something I had picked up "Aww don't worry Auntie, I got it" What a hoot.

My DS is 9. He gets the gift cards for his birthday. We take the one with the highest amount and continue to add to it for his trip. He gets money for chores etc. that he adds to the card amount throughout the year. As long as you don't use the card you can continue to add on to the value. Last year he had over $600.:scared1:
