Help! DFi is refusing rides!

I was just going through the RideMax itinerary with my DFi (we're headed to DL on Sunday and Monday). We've never been to CA before, so I was excited about trying all these rides we've never experienced before. I know he's not a rollercoaster type, but he has no problems with anything at DL. I made sure to leave off Tower of Terror (neither of us like those sudden lifts and drops.) But he stopped me at the Sun Wheel! Now, he's refusing to go on Sun Wheel, Orange Stinger, Maliboomer, and possibly Screamin and Mulholland Madness. Take away the other half of the rides that are too "young" for us, and we're not left with much.

Any advice from those who have been on these? Anything I can say to him to get him to try the milder ones? (A ferris wheel, for Pete's sake!)

I love disney and theme rides, but hey, that ferris wheel is trecherous! I only do Paradise Pier because I have to, or I would never live it down with my boys. But, I really could skip it, and be perfectly happy. There is so much other stuff to do at DCA, and of course I could stay at DL forever. Who knows, maybe the magic will get to him and he will brave up for you!

Just schedule them in and work up to it. You could run two different lists and do the easier stuff first, then, if he is up to it, add on what he is willing to do. If he does not want to do something, but you do, he can stand outside & take pictures of you! (and hold your purse...they love that)

Schedule them and if he doesn't want to go on something with you, he can do something else while you are on the ride.

Too young for you? Hmm. I'm 38 and the only reason I didn't go to a bug's land to ride Heimlich's Chew Chew Train, and the others, on my recent solo trip was because of time. Too young...meh.


On the other hand, Mulholland just looks silly to me, the Orange Stinger looks terrifying, and even the non-moving part of Sunwheel scares me. I did have all those things on my itinerary for this trip, but the day I was slated to do them I had a nasty headache and felt sick, so I didn't think that would be the best idea. However, I was able to go on CA Screamin' the night before (possibly the reason for my headache, LOL), and once the ibuprofen from the first aid station finally kicked in (3+ hours after I took them) I went on ToT and was happy. So maybe if I felt better I would have gone on those rides...I don't know.

If he wont' go on Screamin', there's a Single Rider pass (ask the CM at the line) that can get you on and off of it quite fast!

I have the same problem with my fella. I've specifically told him though that he will be riding them with me!

I let him off going on rides with me the last time I had the chance, and I told him then that "When we go to Disneyland you will have no choice!"

I will work up to it though, start with some rides like HM and POTC, then maybe work it up to Star Tours, then Splash, and Space, TOT, maybe even screaming! and so on...

-Grizzly River Run
-MuppetVision
-Monster's Inc.
-Aladdin
-Disney Animation
-It's Tough to be a Bug

All great attractions in my opinion. Plus if you really want to go on something that he doesn't there are Single Rider passes for:

-Soarin
-Grizzly River Run
-California Screamin
-Mulholland Madness
-Maliboomer

See, this would be me. So, I feel for your dfi. There is no way I would get on that ferris wheel thing. I have motion issues on occassion, but beyond that, I have height issues. So, a majority of those same rides, I refuse as well. I'm going to try Space Mountin, Soarin, Indy, but I already know I can't do Star Tours because it makes me nauseous. And if a person is terrified or ends up feeling sick all day because they are riding things they don't really want to ride, what kind of fun is that person having? There's so much other stuff to do, and who knows, once he sees what they do, maybe he'll change his mind. And when you are in those places, nothing is "too young". That's a place where you are allowed to enjoy things like a kid.

Just try not to guilt him in to things, because if he ends up not enjoying it, will he really want to go back? And you never know, he may surprise you and do some things he says no to right now. And even if it sucks, you can still ride single, if it's something you really want to do that he doesn't.

I am 60+ and love CA, but not Bug Land. I would schedule and go from there. We sometimes intimate ourselves more than what the actual experience is. I would just go with the flow, plans can always be modified.

I have yet to go to DCA...will be there this summer. Does anyone know if DCA offers single rider lines like they do at some of the attractions at WDW? If so, he could wait for a short period of time while you experience some of these rides. If he is not up for it, I would still try and take the chance to experience them for myself. You will be missing out on some great "d" and "e" ticket experieces!

Screamin is a blast, though.

If there's stuff you want to go on that he won't, go without him. He can snack while you ride.

Go on them without him. Maybe he just doesnt want to go?

I agree--the SunWheel is terrifying. BUT, you can go on a stationary car and that takes all the terror out of it--it's just relaxing then, AND you're in a little cage, so the height doesn't seem bad if that bothers him. The view from up there is phenomenal.

And if YOU like roller coasters, don't miss CA Screamin'! Just go without him. Don't feel bad about Mulholland Madness--just a carnival variety Mad Mouse roller coaster--nothing special.

And you've still got Soarin' Over CA, A Bug's Life, the Muppets, Aladdin (the musical), Grizzly River Run (you'll get VERY wet) and the Animation building, which is well worth a visit (Turtle Talk with Crush and the Sorceror's Workshop are musts).

Don't stress about this. Just feel free to do the things you want, and let him do the things HE wants (or doesn't want, in this case.)

That's the great thing about ridemax, you can make as many plans as you want. I would make one plan with those rides and one without, like the others said, he might surprise you! Also, I would make sure and talk to him before you go and ask if he minds if you ride without him. Some people are funny that way, and you don't want any hurt feelings or arguments in DCA!! My dd15 probably won't ride many of those either, so I plan to choose the ones I really want to do and ride alone, but only if she is ok with waiting alone for me!!! I agree with the other poster, don't guilt him into anything! And have fun!!!!

Think of it this way... Disneyland is a FAMILY park which means everything is adapted for adults and children alike. You will see kids going on such rides as Matterhorn, Pirates, Splash, Grizzley River Run, Soarin, Sun Wheel, Screamin', TOT, etc and arnt afraid one bit. If small children can go on any ride at Disneyland and not be terrified I think your DFi will be just fine.

Obviously your the judge as to if you like fast or sudden drop rides or even ones that make you appear to be up really high like Soarin over Cali, but everything really is tame with the exception of the Sun Wheel... I will agree with other posters that that thing is terrifying

I would say don't push/guilt him into anything unless you want both of you to have a miserable time. I HATE the regular rides, they all make me sick and I'm not willing to make myself sick all day to make my dh happy.

I was more than happy to wait with the kids while he went on rides by himself and he ended up being happy that a few of them have single rider lines. We both ended up having a good time and I didn't have to feel guilty about not liking rides the whole trip.

The Sun Wheel, affectionately known as the Sun Wheel O Death, is my least favorite ride. I think it's terrifying! I will ride Tower of Terror 10 times in a row before I will gladly ride the Sun Wheel O Death.

I don't like heights and i don't like rides where I'm up high and i don't feel securely strapped in.

I will gladly skip those rides at the back of CA. There is nothing special or "disney" about them. You can find them in most amusement parks in the USA. I'd rather spend my time riding Pirates for the third time or Space Mtn again.

Even if you skip those, there's still plenty to do there!

To be fair, some ferris wheels are pretty high and scary. I've been to the State Fair of Texas and you couldn't pay me to go on the Texas Star-it is about 20 stories high! I have a fear that one of the gondolas will break sending me falling to my untimely death. Do what me and my hubby will do. Just go on the rides that you want to go on without him and check for single rider lines~they move very quickly.

First, I just want to thank all of you for taking the time to reply. This was my first thread, and I wasn't expecting anything for a week! (Also realized that my email notifications don't work, but that's another story.) I'm also not really sure how to quote and reply to each person, so it'll be old-fashioned general reply I guess.

I had no idea the Sun Wheel was a scary ride! I've never been on a really big Ferris Wheel, so to me it sounds pretty mild. I may not even like it, so who am I to judge him?

Thanks for everyone who recommended the "kid" rides. I know we enjoyed It's A Small World together, but Autopia was pretty lame. I didn't want it to be something like that.

Unfortunately, the Monster's Inc. one is closed this weekend. That's too bad, because that is his absolute favorite movie, and we named our cat "Boo" because of that movie, so I know he'd want to try it. Oh well.

I won't force him to do anything he doesn't want to do, but I hope he'll decide to be brave if he sees young kids on them. Single rider line, huh? I wonder if he'd be okay with that. I'm sure he would. But I have a hard time thinking it's fun to be alone. We'll see.

And to the person who brought up the headache... I didn't even think of that! He's been getting chronic headaches since Thanksgiving, so he will probably not be feeling very well after some of the rides. ::mental note- remember to bring the whole bottle of Tylenol::

I guess I shouldn't worry too much. Because we're using the southern CA resident 2fer ticket, this is really a "free" day for us. And the park is only open from 10 AM to 6 PM.

Boy..I have no problems with CA Screamin', Tower of Terror...Maliboomer...but when it comes to the Sun Wheel.... I just don't know what it is about it! And I'm NOT a wimpy guy! ( Or good heavens...maybe I am!)
