DH and I have decided that our adult omly trip in feb is going to be NY. We went there for our honeymoon 5 years ago and really enjoyed it.

Has anyone been lately and what hotel did they stay in? We stayed in the doubletree metropolitan which was a great hotel and a few steps from the subway. Didnt know whether to stick with that or choose a different one.

Flights will have to be with BA as they are the only ones that are flying direct from Manchester.

Anyone got any must dos?
Last time we did the helicopter tour, mamma mia show, ellis island, statue of liberty, empire state building, central park zoo, local tour guide, a warship museum and a limo/nightclub tour.

This time we are thinking of doing ice skating in central park, Lion King musical and shopping.

Anyone got any pointers,tips or ideas?

I'm in NY in 4 weeks time so I will report back on the hotel then if you like. Also using BA too. We've chosen the Iroquios hotel which is just off 5th avenue at W 44th street so slap bang in the middle of all the action. I got a good deal on Expedia but that was a couple of months ago.

Ice skating on the pond in Central Park is on my list to do, plus a visit the the World Trade Centre site. Apparently there is a church overlooking the site which has a very moving exhibition so I think that will be a very humbling experience.

Some say "top of the rock" is a good thing to do. You can go up to the top of the Rockerfeller Centre and overlook Manhattan.

I am so excited as I've got tix to see Duran Duran on Broadway whilst there. I was a huge DD fan in my teens so that is a dream come true for me!

I am in NYC in four weeks too, will be FORTY one month today but I am glosssing over the numbers part because I will be in NYC, also doing TOTR and tickets for shows, STOMP and radio city xmas spectacular. staying at the salisbury hotel as room size gets great reviews, will feedback on my return!
I have read great things about the big apple greeters, its a free service and it gets rave reviews on the tripadvisor NY forum, which is where I have had all my planning info from.

The big apple greeters are who we used the first time. The man who took us was great.

We went in October/November a couple of years ago, it was fantasic especially walking round in the cold with the manholes in the road steaming away as you see in the movies.

must do's are skating in either Central Park or outside the Rockafeller Centre.

Another must do is to go in one of the bicycle rickshaws, great fun wizzing through the streets dodging taxi's.

Top of the Rock will be great for getting photos of Manhatten with Chrysler Building and Empire State building in the shot.

Shopping, bargains to be had at the Century 21 Department Store opposite Ground Zero and also Filenes Basement.


Can't wait till our next trip back there

Our apple greeter took us there had a ball!,

He also took us to ground zero which was very sad...at the time there was a temporary memorial wall there. It was so sad, it was 15 months after the tragic event yet the metal cross was there and some of the builings were still shrouded due to debris. Probably the strangest thing was the metal earth sculpture which had once stood between the towers being in battery park with all its "war" scars. We will be revisting ground zero to pay our respects again.

I was in NYC in June this year and stayed the first night in the Millenium Hilton it was right beside ground zero It was a beautiful hotel a bit pricey and a bit away from things though then we drove to florida then back up to NYC and stayed in the Embassy Suites Secaucus NJ there is a bus that goes to Penn Station/Madison Square Garden It took about 20 mins to get across it was a lovely hotel too

we always stay at the Waldorf Towers on Park Avenue, near grand central station....we like the location....easy to walk to just about everywhere...

have you tried the double decker tour bus?...
it sounds terribly touristy i'm sure, but it was actually quite good...
it has a south manhattan route and a north manhattan route (including harlem) and is a hop on/hop off sort of bus...though you can stay on and ride it all the way around...
and they also have a bus that will take you over to the aircraft carrier.....we all enjoyed that more than we thought we would...
i think they have a 3rd route that goes into brooklyn, but we've never done that one...

my husband and I actually lived in manhattan for 3 years, but we really enjoyed the tour bus when we went back with the kids years later...
we took it for the kids and ended up enjoying it ourselves just as much..

as for sights...the metropolitan museum of art is nice, but i prefer the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA).....my kids prefer the American Museum of Natural History (not far from where DH and I lived...about 10 blocks above our building on CPW)...my kids are more than willing to spend a day at the natural history museum every time we go..

of course, i love walking around rockefeller center (where i worked years ago)....and we now also go down to ground zero....my husband worked in the WTC years ago...on sundays, we would go to his office in the trade center and then walk all the way back home (to 72nd street) stopping for lunch in soho on the way....memories..

as for broadway, we're creatures of habit...we always go to see Phantom of the Opera and then two other musicals depending on what's there...we loved Chicago and Avenue Q.....and enjoyed Wicked and Spamalot....though i liked the first 3 better than the last 2....
we didn't enjoy the Lion King....

Hi there

We had our first trip to NYC in August and stopped in the Hotel Metro which was recommended to me by a fellow dis-er. It's a lovely hotel in a great location - there is a subway station at the end of the street, and you can walk to Macys, Times Square and the Empire State building.

We flew with Delta to JFK from Manchester. Not the most organised of airlines but they got us there fine - they worked out cheaper than BA for us.

We saw Wicked on broadway which is an amazing show, and went up the Rockefeller at night which I thought was better than the Empire State Building. Don't forget to check out the Disney store on 5th avenue with character greetings on the top floor!

We have stayed at the Renaissance on Times Square, The Swissotel Drake (sadly this is now closed as the building was sold to be converted to high class condos) & also the Roosevelt Hotel (near Grand Central) all were really lovely. We went on a girly trip in March for my 40th and had a meal in the revolving restaurant at the Marriott Marquis Hotel on Times Square (it's called The View) it was not particularly cheap but the view was just breathtaking (we were all speechless for ages) and the food wasn't bad either. I phoned and booked a table from the UK a few weeks before we went. I believe the buffet restaurant on the floor below also rotates but it is much more crowded so the view isn't as good and on the night we went the queue for tables in there looked very lengthy. I'd also recommend a trip to a museum and it wouldn't be a trip to New York for me without a trip to Magnolia Bakery for one of their world famous cupcakes and a look in Tiffany's
