Help! Taking a 5 month old how much do i pack?

Hi Everyone -
I am so excited we are going to Disneyworld next month with our 5 month old. But I have no idea how much to take for him. We are going for 10 days and we plan to buy diapers and formula at walmart when we get there. Does anyone have any ideas? how many outfits, bibs, birp cloths, jammies? Please help. I always plan on 2 outfits per day, one set of jammies per night and use Pampers Bibsters instead of bibs I need to wash...they take up less room in the diaper bag anyway. As for burp cloths...I'll use a hotel washcloth or two, and change them as needed, you can always ask mousekeeping for more. I seem to use more wipes out and about than at home, mostly because they're easy...the big people seem to grab them too.

Enjoy your trip...I was one who never said they'd take a baby to WDW, but by the time I had my 3rd, we threw that rule out the window! She was 3 weeks old on her first visit.

I actually wanted to suggest that you take extra shirts for yourself. When I took my 3 month old, I forgot how often I would need to change due to spit up etc. I was the one who needed extra clothes, even with laundry trips. Also, remember to take your extra shirts into the park with you in the diaper bag.

Now, THIS is an excellent idea! I also agree about the two outfits per day for the baby.

Lydia was 4 months when we took her the first time, and I took WAY too many clothes for her. But, I'd rather have too many than too few! Have a great time!

I recommend Bibsters too. I took my DS at 5 months too. I used a Medula microwave bag to sterilize his bottles. I would wash the bottles in the sink, then bring them to the foodcourt and microwave them. I would go to the food court at a slow time of day.

Make good use of all the child care stations in each park. These were great to feed, change, and apply sunscreen. Check with your Ped. about using sunscreen. It is not recommended for babies under 6 months, but I did alot of research and bought an all natural product recommended by a DISer to use. I also recommend buying a stroller sun protection extender for your stroller. BABIES R US has these.

I live on the wild side.

I take 1 outfit per day and then 1 or 2 extra.

He either sleeps in a diaper or onesies.....

So far *knock on wood* we haven't had bad luck with that, yet.

Bibs--I may have to get some disposable ones as I am not sure what I can do to wash his bibs on the ship. 1 per meal (he eats a little at breakfast and dinner).

Cloth diapers (though he wears them--we have gerber ones that we use as burp cloths)--1 per day.

Blankets 2-3.

His toys! Whatever he likes that is portable.

Baby food!

One or two bowls (extra in case we lose one? )

2 to 3 baby spoons

Sippy Cup!

Small bottle of dish soap to wash things!

If microwave available--the medela bags that let you "clean" everything in the micowave (aka sanitize)

Disposable diapers if a long trip, cloth diapers if private washing machine and dryer are available plus laundry soap for that.

If you are borrowing a pack n play--bring your sheet.

Otherwise, bring your pack n play and your sheet.

clip fan for the stroller (was very nice today--but a fan would be nice for baby)

UV stroller shade (I forgot where I ordered mine, but you can order it on line. I think I even so it at babies r us and it attaches to the stroller. It provides MORE shade and protects them from UV rays.

Baby hat

Baby sunglasses (our DS got his at Target. If he will be in direct sun, we put them on--especially at the pool)

Diaper Wipes!


We have 2 diaper bags--the smaller one is the portable travel bag. The bigger one stores his supplies and stuff. I put his outfits into my suitcase.

Laundry detergent and a stain stick and a small mesh bag or just a pillowcase for small items such as socks. I never leave home without my laundry detergent and a stain stick attatched to my backpak! Also plenty of diaper/wet wipes, disposable bibs and small plastic trash sacks will come in handy.

We went to WDW in April, when DS was 5 mos, and again in Aug when he was 9 mos. I agree with the poster who said 2 outfits per day, plus pj's. Is your baby a spitter? My little guy was (and still is), so I also brought lots of burp cloths.

Don't forget to bring extra clothes to the parks. One night on our most recent trip, I forgot to pack a change of clothes for him and an extra shirt for me in the diaper bag. We went to the MK to have dinner and he puked all over both of us. I had to go shopping on Main St to get a shirt for myself and a onesie for him.

A clip on fan is great if the weather is hot. I didn't use it in April, but I did use it constantly in Aug. I brought a small screwdriver and lots of extra batteries, and DS was very comfy in the Aug heat with his fan blowing cool air on him all day long.

Bibsters are great if he's eating solids. I also brought those plastic bowls and spoons that you can reuse or throw away. I used them for the whole time we were there and tossed them at the end of the trip to make room in the suitcase for souvenirs. Also, I seemed to go through more wipes than I do at home because I'd use them to wipe hands and faces and highchairs.

I brought lots of swim diapers and two bathing suits, as well as tshirts and sunhats.

I brought my own PNP sheets and I brought a blanket to put on the hotel room floor for playtime. I also brought a couple of lightweight receiving blankets that I could drape over the canopy of the stroller so that DS wasn't sitting in direct sunlight. You might want to check with your ped about using sunblock. Most bottles of sunblock say it's for babies 6 mos and older, but my ped said it was ok to use.

We took our seven month old last spring and had a great time! Just make sure you're organized and keep track of what you use for about a week and write down things you think you'll forget. It sounds like people have covered most of the things, but here are a few more that we used. We brought several receiving blankets and used them for playing on on the floor, covering him in his crib, changing his diaper on one (especially in the hotel room), and extras to change out any that got dirty. We also brought a small bottle of dishwasher detergent to wash bottles, bowls, spoons, etc. I just washed everything each night and laid them to dry on a towel before packing them the next day. We used the "take and toss" bowls and spoons but reused them each day. My son also would not take baths in the sink. We found a folding bath seat that folded completely flat at Babies R Us and used that. It was great!

I'm sure there are other things I'm forgetting, but you know what you'll need! Have fun! We can't wait to take our son again in October. This time he'll be 13 months.

So the extra shirt thing for me is a great suggestion too. I'll be sure to tell Grandma to pack an extra too. I also like the idea of using the hotel wash cloths as birp cloths. that will help with more packing room.

We are flying from CA so we are not taking the big travel system stroller. We are takning the car seat but has anyone bought the $40.00 umbrella stroller from Disney? That's what we were planning on doing. The seat leans back and everything. Please let me know what you think because there is no way we could get 10 days of luggage for Mommy, Daddy, Gavin, Grandma, & Grandpa plus a travel system stroller in the trunk of out Saturn Vue or in the rental car when we get there.

Also do we or can we take our own pack and play sheets if we are using the hotels pack and play? Has anyone ever used them before? Will our sheets fit?

Has anyone brought the infant seat one the plane but not bought their child a ticket. How does that work? If the plane has empty seats can we use one for the baby and the infant seat?

If the plane has an empty seat, you can put your carseat in it. If not, they gate check it and put it under the plane.

We did fly with our seat and full-size stroller in July. It was very nice to have the stroller in the airport while we were waiting for the plane. Gate checking was not a problem. Just make sure they tag it at the counter before you get on the plane.

We're traveling with our little one in November so I appreciate all the great suggestions One thing I would reconsider is taking your travel system. I know space is an issue and I almost would try to cut down on the number of suitcases than leave the stroller at home. Remember you can do laundry. I think it's important for the baby to be in a seat that he/she is comfortable and familiar with. DD is a great napper in her stroller and it reclines all the way so going back to the hotel for naps will not be necessary. We may want a break anyway but my point is that you have alot more options with the big stroller than an umbrella. What if you son hates the umbrella stroller....it can almost ruin the trip. Remember too that the big stroller has space under it for bags etc. Just a thought......

Do they count your stroller as one of your items you can take? ie suit cases and carry ons? I am worried about the umbrella stroller a little.
