What do all you parents think of this?

My mom told me the most shocking story today and I just had to share it with other parents.

My aunt was babysitting my cousin's 7 year old son and she took him grocery shopping with her. He pointed to some bottles and said, "Grandma, we have that at home. Can we get some?" My aunt said sure and put it in the cart. When they got home, the little boy picked up one of the bottles and said, "Grandma, can I have some now?" She said sure and poured it in a glass. He drank the entire glass and then my uncle came in. He picked up the bottle and said, "What are you doing with this?" My aunt said, "He wanted some since they have it at home." My uncle said, "Do you know what it is?"

So? What was in the bottle? Are you ready for this? Bartles & Jaymes! Yes, the wine cooler! Apparently, my cousin drinks it but he doesn't give it to his kids! Did my aunt even bother to look at the bottle before she bought it? No! Did she look at it before she let the kid drink it? Uh-uh!:sad2:

I told my mom that I was appalled by that story. How can my aunt be so stupid? My mom said she's not stupid, just naive. I've known this woman all my life. I knew she was a little sheltered from the world, but who would give a kid something to drink without knowing what it is? What will she let him drink next time? Bleach? Apparently, my cousin just laughed about it when he found out. I don't think I would ever leave my kids with her again if I were him and his wife.

Do you think this is an honest mistake or an unforgivable act of stupidity? Apparently, she's not apologetic about it. She just said she didn't know what it was. In every store I've been in, the wine coolers are in the liquor aisle right next to the beer and chilled wines. How could you not know you were buying liquor? It's not like it's right next to the soda and juice. What the?

I would have been really mad. IMO that is not a simple mistake. I imagine the woman can read so I don't get why she wouldn't even look at what she was buying. Then to not even apologize? Not that it would matter because she would not be watching my kids ever again. JMHO.

How was the little boy after he drank the wine cooler? Couldnt she smell that it did not smell like juice? It does not surprise me, some people are just not that bright. For me, just because they are related to you does not mean they would be capable of watching my children. I dont think there are any excuses for what happend there, and hopefully the mom will never leave her child in that persons care.

I totally agree.

Wow that would be really niave . In her defense though I've seen B&J at our grocery store on end caps and not with other alcohol. I've witnessed teens trying hoodwink the parent by slipping some in the cart (but then I saw it sitting somewhere so I think the parent saw it and just took it out and left there). It looks like a fruity beverage and they don't taste alcoholic at all IMO. They are very sweet. I can't believe she's not even apologetic about it though. That was a dumb mistake. She should definitely be sorry! Even though that one beverage probably won't harm the boy. I have a story about a drunk 4yr old (NOT my ds) but my dh probably wouldn't be thrilled if I told it here. :rolleyes1

I totally agree with this too. I have family members who are not allowed to watch my son. When they offer I just make up some excuse of why it won't work out this time. It is my job as a parent to protect my child at all times, even if I am not there. That means being picky of who can watch him. I know mistakes happen to all of us as mommies, but that was a stupid mistake :(

You have to really watch those "energy" drinks. Some of the liquor companies are coming out with their own version, and retailers don't realize they contain alcohol. These drinks are sometimes sold to minors because they are in the open.

The cans are marked with % alcohol by volume information, but they look like the high energy drinks popular now.

Now, I would never let my kids drink Mountain Dew, let alone one of the high-caff. energy drinks, but I know people who do let their kids drink the stuff.

Caff. mixed with alcohol is very dangerous.

WOW is all I can say. I would have a fit!!!!!!
Next week if he says "mommy lets us have candy and cookies for all our meals" will she go a long with that also. There are so many levels of this that I find that would make me angry

1. Come on... read the bottle and see what it is before you give it to a child
2. Do you really listen to the child and just say OK to anything he says he gets at home? Children will ALWAYS try to get away with things. We are the adults.
3. His own father thinks it was funny
4. His own grandmother is not bending over backwards trying to make it up to them and feeling terrible (as well as not taking responsibility for not being responsile)

I can understand that you are very uspset with your aunt and I would be too. But I will say if it were me I would try to find a way to get through this and move on. It happened and hopefully people did learn from it.
I would not say it is unforgiveable.
Good luck... and I don't think I would leave my child with her!!!!

If a 7-year old kid drank an entire wine cooler, it's very likely he could have ended up with alcohol poisoning. Did anyone check on the health of this child after he drank it? One wine cooler has more alcohol than one beer.

Hopefully, idiot auntie won't be babysitting anymore.

Well, the good news is that the aunt lives 2 hours away so I rarely see her! It's not even an option for her to watch my kids so that's not an issue. I leave my kids with my parents all the time (he was a cop, she was a nurse). They are extra vigilent when it comes to their grandsons so I totally trust them.

In regards to the questions about the 7 year old's health, my uncle said he didn't look drunk and I guess he didn't suffer any ill effects. I was a little surprised at my cousin for blowing it off. I don't know how his wife reacted and I would be surprised if she wasn't in shock over it. She is very strict with her kids in terms of that they eat and drink. She's a very traditional and hands-on mom. She homeschools them, makes most of the their clothes and grows her own vegetables. A lot of what they eat is organic and homemade. I can't imagine she'd blow off the older one drinking a wine cooler. She and I e-mail back and forth sometimes so I'm sure I'll hear about it from her!

I've got a story to add. I heard this from the horse's mouth, and it concerns my child.

My MIl and FIL were watching my DD - please note, they asked to "have" her, it was not a favor for me. They picked her up at naptime and predictably she fell asleep in their car. (They not only know what time naptime is, I also warned them.) MY MIL didn't want to wake her so she was going to leave her in the car and go inside the house. I kid you not. She told me this the day after it happened at a family party in front of other people and got mad when I was upset with her. I told her it was illegal and dangerous and that at best my DD would be scared when she woke up alone in a hot car, and at worse she could be kidnapped or even end up with heatstroke.

Her defense? She had rolled down the windows! So therefore it should be okay. My mind was reeling, but I made sure to tell her again that it was both illegal and dangerous and that I didn't care if DD got a nap, but I cared very much for her safety.

Now, you want to know why she didn't leave my 3 yr old in the car on a very hot summer day? My FIL told her absolutely not. Thank God for him. Guess what? MIL is not "having" her over anymore unless FIL is there!

I am very grateful he was there and that I rarely need them to babysit - my parents are excellent and we have paid babysitters I utilize rather than ask them - for obvious reasons.

And the worst part of this? She's not some old dotty lady - she's in her 50's and is a teacher!!!!!

Oh my God SeptemberGirl, what a nightmare. Plus it's your MIL so that creates a whole other pile of issues. On the left alone note.....

Get a dumb ex husband (or wife I'm sure) and then you will see the real stupidity come out. My four year old comes back from a weekend at "daddy's" house and as we're about to go to the store he tells me "I'm a big boy, I can stay here." Then proceeds to tell me that his "daddy" let him stay home alone and play video games while "daddy" went to the store. AGGGGGGGHHHH. I was absolutely stunned (well not completely, there's a reason I got rid of him).

Folks, there is no end to the stupidity of other humans. "God must love stupid people because he sure made a lot of them."

On the note about parents giving kids those energy drinks. I once watched a mom at a restaurant give a maybe 8 month old coca cola. No joke! I wanted to climb over the table and holler at her. :sad2:

Wine coolers are actually a "malt beverage" now, made more like beer, not wine. So most have about the same alcoholic content as beer(4-7%). Not that it makes this right in anyway!

September Girl, you make me glad dh and I both have parents that know what common sense is. I hate to think that your MIL is a teacher though. People leave their kids in her care every day, and she didn't know it's not OK to leave a small child alone in a car? What is wrong with her? :sad2:

My mom used to leave me sleeping in the car when I was a toddler. This was 30 years ago before it was illegal and before they realized how unsafe it was (no one worried about kidnapping as much back then). She told me she had me in the garage with the windows down and the door to the house left open. I freaked out when she told me!! Luckily she knows better now!

I can only assume she did this in the 70's and thought it was still okay! FIL watched DD yesterday - just him, as MIL works - and I joked that I have no worries as long as he doesn't leave her in the car. And then when he dropped her off, he told me a story about taking her on an errand and she fell asleep, but he didn't leave her in the car! So at least HE gets it. She just has an appalling lack of common sense.

Oh yes! LOL I was born in '74 and I must have been only about 2 years old or so.
