Educational report

I am traveling with my friend and her 12 year old daughter in October. The 12 year old's school requires that her mom submit a "proposal" one week before trip on how this will be an educational trip, then DD will write a report.

My friend is not sure what to submit prior to the trip, I suggested maybe doing something on Worldshowcase. She thinks we need to go to Gatorworld so if anyone has had to do this in the past can offer some suggestions on what they did it would be greatly appreciated as I really don't want to go to Gatorworld (which I am sure is a great place but not high on priority list for me) I know I can bypass the gatorworld and go by myself to WDW if it comes to that.

• Different cultures of the world, including architecture, language, diet, and dress, by visiting the different countries in the Epcot World Showcase (Japan, China, Germany, Mexico, Norway, Canada, France, etc.) [student] will have the chance to explore the exhibits for each country and speak with natives from each country who work as cast members.
• American history by viewing the Hall of Presidents presentation in the Magic Kingdom and the American Adventure show in Epcot.
• Nature and conservation at Animal Kingdom.
• Science by exploring the Mission:Space ride in Epcot where he will have a chance to see and feel what it would be like to travel by rocket to Mars and by experiencing the Universe of Energy exhibit which teaches about fossil fuels, energy, and conservation.
• Economics by managing his own spending money and making budget decisions on how to spend his money.

[student] will also be learning about map reading by navigating in and to the different theme parks, as well as the resorts and water parks via the Disney bus system, sociological aspects of crowds including patterns and behavior, physics of the different rides, breakthroughs in technology at the Innoventions computer lab in Epcot, art and animation and the history of film, and mathematics.

We believe this will be a wonderful and educational experience for [student] and hope you agree not to charge him with unexcused absences as a result. If it is possible for [student] to take any assignments with him to be turned in when we return or to turn in before we leave any work that will be due while he is gone, please let us know as soon as possible.

The Seas is very educational about ocean life

The World Showcase on the culture and cuisine of various countries

Animal Kingdom has tons of educational opportunities; ecology, biology, conservation, backyard habitats, everything about various animal species.

Magic Kingdom could be considered educational regarding stage productions, music, costuming, animation, architecture, construction and engineering (take one of the tours)

She could do a biographical report on Walt Disney, a very influential historical figure and demonstrate how his visions and dreams are being realized even today.

Heck the whole thing is a lesson on marketing and economics since Disney is the best at branding and marketing and WDW is the top employer in the state.

Can't imagine any reason to go to GatorWorld.

I agree anything at Epcot or Animal Kingdom should work but the two things that pop into my head when I read this was the Behind the Seeds Tour at Epcot or watching an animal operation/procedure at AK.

I can't believe how much has changed since my mother pulled me out of school for two different trips to WDW. Back in the 80's I had a note asking for my weekly assignments and that was that. Now you need to ask permission to allow your kids to go on vacation...times certainly have changed.

My son did a little bio on the man himself, Walt Disney, last year.

Unfortunately, people know more about the park than about the creator himself, his vision and his drive. His background.

Maybe that can be included in the report as well.

I know what you mean about people being unaware of just how great Walt was. One of my must dos at WDW is to see One Man and His Dream and it always surprises me how nobady waits to see the movie. They just run through the exhibt if they even bother to go in at all.

I found the note on another website I can't take credit for someone else's work...
We used the letter as a guide and sent it to the school yesterday. I thought it would be better to begin addressing our Dec. trip now.
We took them out of school (diff. school system) 3 years ago for a trip and had no problems what so ever.

I agree with all these educational views and especially about Walt himself. After a trip to DL this past spring, it felt really "cool" to walk his steps. It was more of a discovery trip for me about Walt. I met someone who had worked there since day one and he talked to me about rules Walt had back then and how he'd wanted female employees to be modest and wear no makeup. It was a great conversation- it was amazing to me to talk to someone who knew him from an employee standpoint. I LOVED the ambiance and history of Disneyland! Want to bring my kids there!

Here is another take or addition to that proposal-let the teacher know the value of family time and how it is just as important as education. Without family and family-like relationships , we'd be nothing. I personally value family togetherness a tad more important than education . Form the foundation before building upon it! A good education IS very important, and I consider time spent is part of a well-rounded education! Until those buggers leave the house!

OMG, this is perfect! My son is a first grader this year and we will be taking him out for a few days in April/May. I'd rather take him out for a few days then deal with summer heat and crowds. Not worth the money for us if we're waiting in 2 hour lines and passing out from the heat.

How about having the kids make the budget for the trip and maybe do a cost/benefit analysis of the DDP?

Traffic and attendance analysis and management is a huge part of business math, so perhaps note wait times at a specific ride over the course of a day, along with the time the ride takes and how many people it holds and make some estimates regarding crowd movement and size.
