Best place on the ship with Seasick MIL

A friend of mine is taking a cruise with her MIL who is now rethinking the trip since she's afraid she may become seasick.

Are there better rooms on the ship that seem to be more calm?

Thanks for any advice.

Have always been told that the higher the deck, the better and also, the closer to the center of the ship is better.

Um, actually, you're right about closer to center of ship, but not about the higher... the lower the deck, the less the motion - physics and all - closer to the ships center of gravity, less motion.

But it's better to have a window or verandah if you're prone to seasickness, as it helps some folks to look at the horizon.

Thank you for the correction. ;) I have very mild episodes, nothing that a bit of Bonine can't help.

A midship cabin on deck 2 would be the optimum for movement. And she could go up to deck 4 24/7 if she needs fresh air. Also, the aft will have less motion than forward.

I have extreme motion sickness, but as long as I take my Bonine I'm fine. I get it into my system 24 hours before I fly, and take it continuously. She can check with her doctor, but I take a higher dosage than what is recommended on the box.

We just got off the Wonder last night. I tend to get motion sickness very easily. I started taking Dramamine non-drowsy (same ingredients as Bonine) the day before and had absolutely no problems...............until the final night of our cruise. I thought I was in the free and clear and felt great and then about 7 pm we were in the theater watching Dreams and I started feeling very light headed. As we proceeded to our room on deck 2 forward, I began to really feel the ship moving. Another man was in the corridor and he mentioned to me "does anyone else feel this ship moving terribly?" I told him I thought I was the only one. He looked as good as I felt. I was sick the balance of the night. Missed our dinner rotation, etc. and I was very bummed. I'm home now and still having trouble getting rid of the feeling of "moving." I feel like I am walking on a floating bridge. One that goes down as you step and then bounces back up again. On the ship, the motion I was feeling on the last night was a side by side motion like a swinging pendalum. I also heard a lot of people say they could not look at the moving water without feeling quesy. I tend to agree but not all the time.

I think it just all depends. As I said, I felt great for almost the entire cruise on 2/forward with the Dramamine. I will also say I spent a lot of time that day in the very hot sun and had a few drinks which I think contributed to the feeling I was having.

My wife gets car sick in the back of our van and air sick if the flight has much movement. For the past 5 years she has taken a Ginger Capsule in the morning and at night and no motion sickness. Even with 20-30 ft seas last November.

My MIL went with us on a CCL trip this past Feb. She was all stressed about getting sick to the point she was going to get prescription meds from the Dr. She does not get car or air sick and we told her she would be fine. She was. Did not take, ginger, Bonine or Dramamine.

Better safe than sorry, but you may want to try the ginger. My wife found that she would not get drowsy on the ginger like Bonine if she wanted to have a glass of wine or cocktail.

Once again, never take Ginger without consulting your personal doctor first since it can have some life threatening issues for some with certain health issue or on certain medicines.

I just got back from out 9/8 Western cruise.. I was so worried about getting sea sick... I took the bonine 2 days before the cruise and everynight... I felt the ship move.. but I never felt sick...:cutie: I was so relieved...

I think it really depends on the person... the medicine and the seas...;)

Try for a lower deck. You feel less motion. Having been to sea a few times, I learned (non-medical & non-scientific!) that there are two types of sea-sickness. One type is gastric in nature. The easy way to prevent this is to always have a little something in your stomach. At sea, I relied on a few saltine crackers or some bread. It helps absorb gastric juices. Never had any sickness even though we went thru some pretty rough seas and a hurricane in the Bermuda Triangle. The second type, is a vertigo or inner ear kind. Basically, you don't look down at the water and try to look towards the horizon if you feel it coming on. If you get dizzy, sit or lie down.

I know this is not at all scientific, but after 4 years at sea, and 5 DCL cruises, plus some travel across the Irish sea; I've never been sea sick. :lmao:
