What excursions would you recommend on the Western Magic that is suitable for 10 year old boy. He loves the water and beach. He is also a history buff.
We did the Western in '03 and will be doing another one in December. Here are some of our favorite activities in each port...
Key West
There are some museums in Key West and some pirate sites. On our first visit to Key West we did the Trolley Tour. It gave a nice overview of the island and a bit of its history. You can get on and off to explore wherever you want to so it's a nice way to get around town. Another highlight of our first visit was the aquarium. It is small but very hands-on and my kids (11 and 8 at the time) loved it.
This year we will be renting electric cars in Key West and exploring town on our own.
Grand Cayman
Do not miss Stingray City! I cannot say that strongly enough! It was the highlight of our first Western cruise and we're going back in a few months! Just amazing! You can either do the excursion through
DCL or book directly through Captain Marvin's (our choice) or Captain Bryan's. If you are sailing with a large group you should look into a private charter. It is not much more per person than the regular excursions but you have the boat all to yourselves.
Cozumel
If he is at all interested in Mayan history or the history of Mexico take him on the Tulum ruins tour. The ruins were amazing and there is also a small beach there that is great for a swim after your tour. It is a long day but we found it to be well worth it.
Another great excursion in Cozumel is the Royal Dolphin Swim but it must be booked on your own, not through DCL. The DCL dolphin excursion is more of a meet & greet with the dolphins. The Royal Swim includes having the dolphins pull you by their dorsal fins and them pushing you out of the water.
Hope this was helpful! Happy Sailing!
