As we are gearing up for back to school, I keep trying to come up with fun things to do that will make back to school exciting (or at least fun). We buy new school clothes and school supplies. What do you guys do?

My DD started school this week and her teacher sent her home with a bag of Lucky Charms and this poem attached. I thought it was great and maybe could be altered to use your kids!

To Use With Lucky Charms

This special treat is to remind you that I’m glad you are in my class! Before you eat your treat have someone read this list to you. Search the bag for the marshmallow shapes hidden inside! You should find:

*A yellow star---to remind you to always shine!
*A pot of gold---to remind you that you’re worth a million!
*A colorful rainbow---to remind you to promise to always do your best!
*A blue moon---to remind you that once in awhile, we all make mistakes, and
that’s okay!
*A green clover---to give you good luck as you begin first grade!
*A purple horseshoe---to remind you that U matter!
*A red balloon---to remind you to soar above the clouds and try new things.
*And most of all---a pink heart to remind you that as your teacher, I care
about you.

Love that poem Dyan! So, how was the cruise and the mini-Dis meet???

Aroyer,
We take a trip to the zoo before school starts.. I take photos of the kids in the same spot @ the house the morning school starts.. This year.. I grabbed in the $ spot @ Target the name tags the teachers use for the kids' desks.. and I had the kids write their names on it.. I'll include it in their first day of school page... and than I'll have one done the last week of school to see if there was any progress in the handwriting department! This year, DS6 was student of the day on Tuesday, so he got to do the big math paper for the class... and he was able to bring it home... so I'll get a photo of that too...

Otherwise, it's just little things... that are more personal for me and the kids.. An early breakfast (which mommy doesn't do breakfast often), time at the park together, and ice cream run @10pm to Kroger for sundaes just because...

Thanks for the good ideas! I just realized last night that today is my last day home with her, so we are going to have to do something fun today other than meeting her teacher.

aww what fun ideas!! i have awhile still until school begins for my little ones, but what a fun thing to when the time does come!!

Besides me singing It's the most wonderful time of the year?

We go on vacation to our family's beach house the week before school starts.:goodvibes

That sounds like fun! We met her teacher today- I think we are going to love her! I hope!! She loves her new room- she actually gets a desk all her own this year. Last year her desk was a big round table with 4 kids at the table. I am going to make breakfast on Monday morning, I never do that either, so I think I will. Trying to decide what special something I can cook. (I use the word cook in the loosest sense of the word! :rotfl2: ) There will be more pictures (already took 33 today). Keep the ideas coming!

Our special breakfast is Cinnamon Rolls... w/ extra icing!!! My kids know it's a good day when mommy gets up and cooks breakfast!!! :)

I was thinking along the lines of cinnamon rolls. Great minds think alike! :thumbsup2 My kids have only seen me cook in the last 6 months. Had to start cooking dinner because DH was getting home too late to start cooking. DH is an excellent cook so I have never had to do it, but I am starting to get better.

Ok, slow computer made me post twice!! ACK

Every year we chased/beat the bus to elementary school. After it leaves the stop we hop in the car and run to school with our video cameras in hand. Then we wait on the black top for the bus to pull up andvideotape the kids arriving. However -- once the older one got out of elementary school that ended for her.

I have a neighbor/good friend who backs chocolate chip cookies for the kids when they come home from the first day of the school year. She waits outside with a big tray of cookies and the kids on the block get one.

i have only had 2 other 1st days with the last 2 years of preschool, but what i did was i took a pic of him holding the door at school like he was walking in and on the last day i took a pic of him pushing the door open like he was walking out!(along with 100 other pics!!!!) i thought maybe when i finally get my act together and scrap that page it might look cute. walking in the 1st day and walking out the last day. plus I could see how much bigger he had grown in the year. Now, that being said, i was told that the 1st day of K they will escort them to their rooms and we are not allowed to bring them actually in. they will take them from the bus and make sure they all get in the school. Oh I can feel the tears coming on right now. sigh.
I was so glad to see this thread, because I'd like to start a new tradition. Like Ashley said we do the new clothes thing, new backpack, but I kinda want some kind of yearly tradition that we can do. We did the whole picking out snacks yesterday. I wanted him to have something that he liked so I let him pick it out. He also asked if I would make him homemade trail mix, which of course I did. I just want something special.
Keep the ideas coming. I've been enjoying them all.
thanks Ashley, this was a good idea!!!!

Ok, we are bathed, tucked in and eagerly awaiting the morning! We picked out snacks and lunches today and of course DD wanted everything we bought for snack for her snack this afternoon. Had to tell her to hold her horses!! :lmao: Tried on the new outfit to make sure it worked with the shoes and accessories. We are good to go!

can't wait to hear about her first day of school.. This is starting our second full week...and it still gets to my heart...but the peace and quiet I have during the day is a thrill!!! :)

Bus just picked them up..and I just rattled the older ones that need to leave in an hour! :)

Thanks everyone! We got her to school on time (sorta)... I am anxious to know how her first day goes. Now its time to adjust to just having DS home with me.

DD had a great first day!!! She loves her teacher and her favorite part of the day is their quiet reading time. My favorite part is that I got to hear all about her day- when I worked and got home at 5:30 she had already forgotten most of what had happened! :cool1:

how great is that??!!! i'm happy for both of you!
we have orientation for kindergarten tomorrow and then our 1st day is next Wednesday.

I'll be thinking about you! DD was very apprehensive about Kindergarten- she was afraid that her classroom wouldn't be fun. She walked in for meet the teacher and saw a classroom full of pets! Hamsters, guinea pigs, fish and a snake :-)eek: ). Needless to say after that, she wasn't worried any more.
