San Angel Inn Restaurant Review

I ate at San Angel Inn Restaurant a few weeks ago. I just wanted to let everyone know that it was wonderful.

In the early days of Epcot, San Angel Inn was one of my favorite restaurants. However, at some point, that place took a wrong turn. The menu devolved into almost entirely Tex Mex, which basically made it just a more expensive, fancier version of its sister outside.

This trip, I decided to give it a try again, and I'm so glad I did. The menu is back to what it was like originally. There were two other people in my party. All of our appetizers and entrees were delicious. It's not like it was so authentic that I thought I was in Mexico, but it was definitely much closer to authentic Mexican than it was the last time I ate there. And there were only one or two menu items that I'd classify as blatantly Tex Mex.

If you had given up on the San Angel Inn like I had, you might want to give it another look.

Enjoyed reading your review ~ Thanx for sharing.

We are going to San Angel Inn in September, and I am also wondering what to order:confused3!! Please post what you ordered. It would be a great help.

What items did you try??

Duh. My apologies too all for not saying what I ate right off the bat.

For an appetizer, I ordered the Nachos. My favorite food is cheese. I had been at WDW for six days at that point, and I had eaten nothing with cheese the whole time, so I figured I could get my fix from some plain old nachos. These were a cut above what I'd get at a local restaurant. Very tasty.

For my entree, I had the Filete Motuleno. Delicious. What made it work was that it wasn't a crap piece of meat under all that stuff. The meat was a good enough cut that you could eat it all by itself, which is what I'd expect for almost $30.

My one friend had the Camarones con Fideos. He said it was the best thing he had had the entire trip. (He had 7/8 of his stomach removed because of an aneurysm [or is that embolism?]. I was afraid he wouldn't be able to eat anything at this restaurant, and it turned out to be his favorite.)

I think my other friend had the Pollo a las Rajas, and he liked that, too.

The margarita I had was just OK. Nothing wrong with it, but it wasn't amazing like everything else there was.

We haven't eaten at San Angel in a few years either, because our last meal there wasn't too good. But my DD really wanted to try it this visit - I think she just wants to watch the boats go by! So we're giving it a try! Thanks for the review - I'm a little less nervous now!

I had read on numerous threads that the nachos there were really bad. Other reviews had compared the chips to a cheap brand of tortilla chips. Did you find this to be true?

We've dined at San Angel a few times over the years. We like the Pollo a las Rajas. It is in one of the newer Disney cookbooks. We made it at home first, then ordered there to compare.

We didn't have a priority seating. We walked up to the podium, and we were told there were no seats available. We called 407-wdw-dine and were seated in 20 minutes.

We had a similar, though opposite, experience at WCC. It was pouring rain, and we didn't feel like leaving WL. I called Dining and they said nothing until
8:30pm. Walked down to WCC, and they seated all 6 of us right away. You think they'd be looking at the same computer.:confused3

Can you describe the Pollo a las Rajas? Is the chicken white meat? Does it come with rice or beans?

Thanks for the review. I'm not an adventurous diner at all so probably wouldn't choose it for myself though.

The last time my wife & I ate there I noticed a change as well... I am a big fan of the Mole Poblano. In the past this dish, which was supposed to be very spicy, was not. It was very tasty, but I felt the dish always focused on the chocolate aspect vs. the spicy. Well, the last time we went, the dish had definitely gotten a re-do. The spice was there, and boy was it good! made my face read and my nose run... good stuff.

DS GF had that too. She's from Columbia and LOVED it. I too skipped San Angel for a few years but when we went last Sept and Dec it was great! I love it! Great atmosphere too!

We ate at San Angel 2 years ago on the DDP and we wouldn't go back. The food was horrible, the restaurant was so overcrowded it wasn't funny and it was horribly slow. Just my opinion, but we won't be going back.

Mickey - here we come.............:woohoo:

Thanks for the review - I enjoyed reading it! San Angel Inn was one of my most favorite restaurants in all of WDW when my family and I went there back in the 80's. I especially love the atmosphere. I'll be going back to San Angel for dinner on my honeymoon trip and am glad to hear that you've had positive things to say about it! :goodvibes

We love San Angel and have had several really great meals there over the last year and half. The chips are Tostitos but the salsa I am pretty sure is homemade. The nachos are very good, they come with a Mexican sausage on them which makes them a bit different. Mexican food is really a hot topic, it has lots of different varieties from Mexico's many regions. And the various styles within the United States just makes it hard to pinpoint what good, authentic Mexican food really is!

We have also enjoyed the atmosphere (love the Hidden Mickey's in the volcano smoke) and had wonderful service each time we have been there.

I also agree the food tasted different than it did when we ate there the very first trip three years ago. That trip, it wasn't bad but I wasn't sure we would return. We did about a year and half later for the atmosphere alone and were surprised at how much better it was. It's stayed that way the last few visits.
