As a DVC member is it possible to reserve a room now at a DVC resort if I do not have any points available in my account; in the hope of obtaining a points transfer in the future to cover the stay, or paying for it; or make a cash reservation now and converting it later to a points reservation, assuming a points transfer? Can I make a reservation now within the 11 month window (at my home resort) if I don't have the points now but will when I plan to travel, ie using 2009 points when alloted in my UY (Feb), for a 2008 vacation (after Feb 08 which is when my 2009 points become available)?

I don't think MS will let you make a ressie without the points available. I don't know if you can convert a cash ressie to points. As for the 2008 vacation, I would think if you're within your 11 month booking window, you should be able to borrow from your 2009 point allotments. There have been times when I had banked points, scheduled a last minute trip within that use year, and borrowed the next year's points forward. Of course, when you borrow the points forward, they're locked into that use year.

The points must be in your account when it is reserved for the UY you are reserving. So, if you want to stay in Feb 08, your 08 UY, you need enough points banked from 07, current 08 points plus points borrowed from 09. Points you hope to have transferred from another owner at some time in the future won't help.

If you don't have enough banked 07, current 08 and borrowed 09 points, you can reserve additional nights using cash and there may be a 25% discount from rack rate for those nights. Once you get more points, however, cash reservations cannot be converted to points reservation. You need to reserve the new reservation with points (subject to availability), then cancel the old cash reservation.

As noted above, you can borrow points you will get in Feb 09 for a Feb 08 vacation. Once borrowed, however, they cannot be returned to you 09 UY and must be used for a reservation before you UY ends in Jan 09.

You can make the Feb 08 reservation at your home resort starting in March 07 (11 months) and for other resorts starting in July 07 (7 months).

The points have to be available to you at the time of the stay.

However, if you are counting on paying for the reservation via a points transfer, the transfer must be completed before you can make the reservation.

You may borrow points one use year ahead - MS will allow you to borrow points from your 2009 use year to make a reservation in your 2008 use year (even if you call to make the reservation during your 2007 use year). For example, let's say you have a February use year and want to make a reservation for May 2008 but have no 2007 points left and no 2008 points left. A May 2008 vacation falls within your 2008 use year. You can call in June 2007 to make the reservation at your home resort. MS will allow you to borrow the points from your 2009 use year for that reservation.

You cannot convert a cash reservation to a points reservation. (They come from completely separate inventories). However, You may cancel the cash reservation and make a points reservation if there is availability when you call to make the points reservation.
