Be careful of amazon!

So I was ordering something for my nephew's birthday and there was a box that said 'This item qualifies for free 2 day shipping, click here for more info." So I clicked it, and it said 'Congratulations, you have successfully signed up for amazon prime,'- which just happens to be an $80 fee. The help page says I can cancel it by going to the 'manage my amazon prime account' page and clicking 'cancel'- but there IS no cancel button on that page. It may be because it rejected the cancelled credit card that they had stored as mine- but if they think they are getting a different one they're nuts. So they miss out on a sale, and my nephew misses out on the $12.99 NC State t shirt and sweatshirt combo he was going to get.

That offer shows up on every single account and it is CLEAR they want you to sign up for Amazon Prime.

It's a great deal to take the offer, because one-button click cancels it and you never get billed.

For business purposes, I have approximately 100 Amazon accounts. I add the Amazon Prime trial to one of those accounts at a time. When the trial runs out, I move on to another account.

I'm sure it actually said that you qualified for a free trial of Amazon Prime (unless you previously had a subscription to Prime) It was actually a 30 day free trial of Prime you could have had and received free 2 shipping on your nephew's order. The $80 fee for Prime wouldn't have been charged until the end of your 30 day trial period and it is really easy to cancel. You could easily get the free trial, free shipping and cancel after your order shipped.

Sorry, but I think you panicked a bit and didn't read it clearly. Have you tried going back in and ordering again and reading the terms of the Prime offer?

Maybe they were talking about the free trial, but even if they were, they shouldn't sign me up for anything and attempt to run a credit card just by clicking a button that is only labeled 'more info.'

I've also seen posts on this board that people have been automatically upgraded to more expensive shipping choices than they wanted. Good deals or not, I'm staying away from amazon.

ETA: I didn't see anywhere to read the terms of the prime offer when I went back in.

That's too bad that you didn't have good luck on Amazon. I always do.

As far as 'automatically' being upgraded on your shipping, it's not exactly automatic. If you're not paying attention, you will just skip past the shipping options, instead of selecting the one you want (in my case, always the free option!)

Nope, it wasn't a trial. I went back in and created a new account, and it did the same thing. It says "Buy now and get free two day shipping," and when you click that link it signs you up for amazon prime. Doesn't say anything about it being a trial, and it says you can cancel as long as you haven't placed an order with it yet.

I just went in to check, and this is the message I saw at the top of my page (I had selected an NC State sweatshirt to try to be cnsistent with the OP's order):

"You've qualified: Two-Day shipping on this item is FREE with a free trial of Amazon Prime. "

This is what it said when I tried

Join Amazon Prime and ship Two-Day for free and Overnight for $3.99. Already a member? Sign in.

What did it say when you did it? That clearly states that you must join to get that shipping deal, so I wonder what it said for you....

That's what it said before I created a new account and logged in. If I log in and select a sweatshirt size, a gold button appears at the top that says ONLY "Buy now and qualify for free two day shipping.' There is a blue link underneath that says 'learn more,' but that link does not work. If you click the gold button, it automatically tries to charge any credit card you have on file the membership fees.

I have never had a problem with Amazon that I can think of, I've never clicked on that button though (I am not interested in it).

Maybe the confusion is between "get free two day shipping" and "get free shipping". The difference being, you need to try the Prime to get two day shipping, while the free shipping (on orders over $25) is a given.

Exactly. OP probably chose the wrong shipping option and then it automatically signed her up for Prime. Not really Amazon's fault at all.

You do have to watch out a little bit, in case the free standard shipping is not checked (it usually isn't). So I make sure that is checked before clicking to finish the purchase.

I LOVE Amazon. They have so much - from books to music, music I'd never heard of - to Jiffy Pop to clothes and Clif Bars. I always find it fun to browse.

No, I did not select a shipping option at all. I hadn't gotten that far. I clicked a button that says ONLY 'This item qualifies for free 2 day shipping,' and was automatically signed up for prime. - This problem has been acknowledged and fixed by amazon's customer service department.

I have to say it's pretty annoying that I posted this to try and help people and everyone has to assume that it must be due to something I did wrong. People keep trying to say I must have done this or done that, when I have already described EXACTLY what happened.

When I click "learn more" I get a pop-up showing me the benefits, I wonder why yours bypassed the pop up.

Nothing at Amazon is a one click process. I'm sorry you are having difficulty but you don't just click one button at Amazon and get charged.

Yes, actually, that's exactly what did happen. Just because it has never happened to you personally, does not mean that it's impossible.

unless you sign up for "one click" that is (which is like their express checkout for frequent customers.)

Not trying to dis the OP here, but maybe you need to clean out your cookies/clear your browser. I've been buying from Amazon for years and never had a problem. Even did the Amazon Prime thing (free for 3 mos at the time) so it would get me through ordering for the holidays one year.)

Maybe clear things out and try, try again. Or if you are turned off by them, contact their customer service or try ordering from a different online company that suits your needs.

I know it can get confusing when ordering online sometimes. I just make sure that I read all of the fine print and pay close attention to the shipping details.

I do have a pop up blocker, but I did not get the usual message that something had been blocked.
