For those of you that prefer short stories to fat novels, you are in luck. This report will be nowhere near as long as my last one! ;) Let me explain. First, this trippie only covers a three-day weekend as opposed to a weeklong family trip to the World. Second, the cast has been dramatically downsized to two: DH and me… so, no funny anecdotes about the kids to relate this time around! However, the last and probably most important reason for brevity is that I really hadn’t planned on writing a trip report; so I didn’t keep a travel journal or take any notes. Well, suffice it to say that my short-term memory is not as good as it used to be. (I really should begin taking Ginko or something!)

The Cast:

Principal Characters:

Ed: DH(45) Runs, bikes, and swims regularly. Usually runs 5Ks; attempting his first half-marathon this weekend.

Kathy: DW(43) Shops, cooks, and DIS-es regularly. Usually walks (the dog); attempting her first 5K this weekend.

Supporting Characters:

Tricia: DD(10). Really looking forward to having her cousin sleep over for the entire weekend! The American Girl dolls are ready, and the nail polish and dress-up clothes are laid out and ready to go!

Billy: DS(8) Autistic. Surprisingly unconcerned about Mom and Dad going to WDW for the weekend. (Whew!) Looking forward to a visit from his cousin, but especially from his Aunt Eileen….she gives good tickles!

Aunt Eileen: My DSIS. Generous and fun loving; she relates well to Billy and understands his quirky ways. Always ready to help out a sister when needed.

Caity: My DN(10). Preparing for a fun weekend with Tricia, Billy, and our dog, Aimee. Hoping to convince her mom that getting a dog is vitally necessary to the happiness of their family!

Aunt Rae: AR. Ed’s aunt. Lives in town; like a grandmother to the kids. Went to WDW with us last November and already planning for this year’s trip.

Backstory:

It all started innocently enough one evening last Spring, after the kids were safely tucked away in bed, and I was hanging out with Ed on one of his rare nights off. He was lying in bed watching CSI and reading a running magazine; I was at the computer, deeply submerged in yet another DIS trip report.

“You know, there’s an ad in here for a half-marathon at WDW in January”, he remarked suddenly.

Up periscope.

“Mmm-hmm”, I replied, trying to play it casual. “I’ll bet they do a really good job putting on a race”, he said, getting up to show me the advertisement.

“Looks great!” I said, glancing at the magazine. “You’re right. They probably go all out.... characters and everything. I’ll bet it would be a lot of fun.” I turned back to face the computer screen, but I wasn’t reading anymore. I just held my breath for what seemed like an eternity. Ed flopped back onto the bed.

“They’re doing a half marathon and then a full marathon the next day.”

“Mmm-hmm.”

“I could probably do a half-marathon. I did pretty good on that 10K; I just need to train with some longer runs.”

“Mmm-hmm.”

“They’ve got a 5K “Family Fun Run”, too” he added. “You could use it as incentive to run every day…”, he drifted off; distracted by the television.

“Mmm-hmm.” Gotcha!! I clicked on Travelocity to check airfares for January. :woohoo:

**************************

Now, I must explain two things so that you will all realize the extraordinary nature of the above conversation:

1. I am the one who is nuts about going to WDW. I do not run.

2. He is the one who runs. He thinks that I am nuts. Period. Because I am always talking about going to WDW.

Now we were planning on a weekend trip to WDW together…..without the kids….. to run.

This was going to be interesting. ::yes::

I laughed out loud reading your set-up. :rotfl2: It sounds like our house, only I haven't taken on the 5km. Can't wait to read more!!

Well, suffice it to say that my short-term memory is not as good as it used to be. (I really should begin taking Ginko or something!)

I got some of this, but I don’t think it works very well, I can’t remember to take it.

Alright sign me up for another trip report.

Let me think is your other one done yet…???? :rotfl2:

I think you and Blue just like to have multiple threads going at the same time.

So you were there when we were there and you didn’t stop by for coffee and Danish at Roaring Fork?

Listen, you troublemaker, I am done with my report!!! ::yes:: I just post a few responses to readers now and then! Nah-nah-nah-nah-nah!!

Kathy

I read your last report but shamefully failed to post :( I won't make the same mistake this time. I really love your writing style. I have a disability (Muscular Dystrophy) so I can understand about extra challenges...

Looking forward to another good read!

Well, suffice it to say that my short-term memory is not as good as it used to be.

You could just make stuff up? :confused3 ::yes:: :rolleyes1

Anyways, loved your family trip report so I've got coffee in hand and ready to read! :surfweb:

Thursday, 1/4/07

6:30 am: Music from the alarm clock-radio woke me from a fitful night’s sleep. As I opened my eyes and the fog slowly cleared, I remembered….. I’m going to Disney today! Oh, Uggggggghhhh.

What? No Woo-Hoo? No dancing bananas? No. Definitely not. Ugggggggghhh. Why? Because I was still sick. Sick with a terrible cold. That’s what comes, I guess, from all the hugging and kissing of relatives over the holidays. Ahh-chooo! (Sniffle, sniffle) Ahh-choo! Oh, boy. Better get going; I’ve got to get the kids up for school.

I shuffled out into the hallway and climbed the stairs to Tricia’s room. “Time to get up, honey”, I said as I shook her sleeping form. “Okay, Mommy”, came the muffled reply. Then, “Oh, Caity and Aunt Eileen are coming today!!” She kicked off the covers and started downstairs, chattering a mile a minute about all the games she had planned for the weekend with her cousin.

She went in to take her shower while I went to the kitchen and got breakfast ready for the kids. Poured some dog food into Aimee’s bowl and received a grateful lick on the hand. Turned on the news…. no problems with weather today….our flight should take off as scheduled. Well, thank God for small favors. I began packing the lunches.

Tricia came ‘round the corner wearing her bathrobe and still talking non-stop about the weekend: which dolls Caity was bringing, what CDs they were going to listen to, the fashion show they were going to put on for my sister, etc, etc. Her voice started to sound like a distant buzzing in my head. I did not feel well. I made my way into to bathroom. Ahhh! I tried to breath in as much of the leftover steam as I could.

Oh great. :sad2: I discovered that now, in addition to my cold, I had my time of the month. I groped through the medicine cabinet to find the Midol. Popped two tablets in my mouth, took a swig of water, and threw the bottle in my toiletries bag with the cold remedies and tissues that were already packed. Oh, great.

Now it was time to wake Billy. I dragged myself back up the stairs and into his room. He heard me coming and started laughing. That boy always wakes up laughing! I smiled as he gave me a hug an sniffed my hair. Thanks, son, I really needed that hug! Then I got him downstairs and into the shower just as Ed came in the door from work.

“Hi, hon……you look terrible!”
“Thanks, I feel terrible.”

I finished helping Billy with getting washed and dressed. He is mostly independent, but needs verbal prompting so he doesn't get distracted from the task at hand. After sprinkling my goodbyes to both kids with extra hugs and promises of a bedtime phone call later that night, I let Ed take over getting them out the door while I crawled back into bed for a few minutes.

Couldn’t rest for too long, though, because I still had some last-minute packing to do. I was determined to get everything I needed inside one carryon bag so we could avoid bag-check. (I had mailed a box of our liquid toiletries to the resort earlier in the week.) I showered…and felt a little better. Ate breakfast….felt a little better. Perhaps it was just the Midol kicking in.

Ed had gone upstairs to use the spare bed for a little catnap. Good. That meant I could change the sheets on the pull-out couch for my sister to use over the weekend. (Ed, not wanting to become infected with my cold right before his big race, had been sleeping on the pull-out couch for the past few days. I felt like a Typhoid Mary) No need to worry about cleaning the bathroom; I had been disinfecting and spraying with Lysol about three times a day since the first cold symptoms hit! I tidied up the living room as best I could. This was my sister that was coming, not a photographer for House Beautiful, so I didn’t have to kill myself. Besides, I just didn’t have the energy.

My sister, Eileen, would be coming over later that day. She lives about an hour away and was planning to get on the road once my niece came home from school. Since she is even worse that I am with being late, that meant she would be arriving right about dinnertime. ;) I had made a lasagna the night before, so she didn’t have to cook. In the interim, Aunt Rae would come and watch the kids. We had to be at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex before 7pm to pick up our race packets, so we had to take an early afternoon flight. The race packets would not be available on race day, so this was a must-do. (We were both registered for the 5K on Friday and he was registered for the half-marathon on Saturday.)

Around 10:30, Ed got up, showered, and drove over to fetch Aunt Rae. She came in and tut-tutted about the inopportunity of my cold, then wished us luck as the driver arrived and we sped off to the airport.

The three-hour flight to Orlando was unremarkable, except for the fact that no matter how much cold medicine I had taken, my nose kept running and my head felt like it was going to pop! I hinted to Ed that maybe, just maybe, I might not be able to run the 5K with him the next morning. He gave me a look.

“Really, honey, I want to run with you tomorrow, really I do! It’s just that I feel awful.”
“Well, just don’t get me sick, okay?” He closed his eyes and tried to sleep.

I felt bad. He had been training faithfully for the half. He had also been encouraging me and pushing me, when needed, to get out and train. He acted as my trainer during a bout of plantar faceitis and even bought me an expensive pair of Saucony running shoes. I tried not to breathe in his direction.

I had been doing pretty well with a daily jog/walk all through the Summer and early Fall. Then came our WDW vacation in November (and all the time spent planning it) and then the crazy busy-ness of the holidays. Throw in some snowy/icy days and I began to slack off to the point where I wasn’t really running at all….just doing a long power-walk with Aimee about three times a week, if that. :rolleyes1 Sigh. So, even without the cold and the monthly discomforts, I really wasn’t ready for a race. I blew my nose and gratefully took a cup of hot tea from the flight attendant.

We landed at MCO around 4:00. No baggage, so we hopped right into the towncar and drove straight to the Swan. I had originally wanted to book us at the Contemporary so that Ed could stay on the beloved monorail, but the Swan has an awesome discount for nurses and government workers so it was really no contest!

The two aqua and coral-colored sister resorts soon loomed into view. The first time I saw the ‘Swolphin’ and those garishly large dolphins and swans perched on top, I thought, “Ickk!” But…. they are starting to grow on me (especially at 50% off rack rate!)

We checked in and were asked for our ID (for the discount). Ed produced his police ID. My one and only request had been for a quiet room; I explained that Ed would be getting up at around 3am on Saturday and that we both would want to nap during the day. I had also hoped for a king bed. After all, this was supposed to be a romantic weekend getaway. We had just celebrated our 12th wedding anniversary on New Year’s Eve, so this was really our anniversary gift to each other.

“It’s no problem if you don’t have a king room.” Ed told the desk clerk. He nodded in my direction. “She’s sick.” The clerk smiled politely. Thank you, Sir Galahad.

Wonder of wonders, they did have a king room in what the clerk assured us would be a quiet location on the 12th floor. We boarded an elevator and went up so we could quickly check out the room and drop off our bags before scooting over to the Sports Complex.

Would it be all that we expected? Tune in next time………

mackeyapp: I'll do almost anything for a trip to WDW!

eternaldisneyfan: No worries! I lurked on reports for months before I started posting. Glad to have you along!

Marion: Hello again! I am double-checking my facts with Ed; hopefully they will be correct. Make things up? Who do I look like, Buzzilla?? (The Man Report.)

Goofster57: (Voice of Roz) I'm watching you, Keith, always watching you!

Sounds like someone was setting up a shopping trip instead of the race

We had just celebrated our 12th wedding anniversary on New Year’s Eve,

Belated Congratulations

We are celebrating our 25th in June, nobody thought she would put up with me for that long, especially my loving Mother-in-Law, (bless her heart)

(And before you or blue_river say anything we got married when we were 10 years old)

(And before you or blue_river say anything we got married when we were 10 years old)

:cheer2: Congrats! Us too for the 25th anniversary on June 19th! And yes... I was a child bride :bride:

And a belated congratulations to you too Kathy... wish you could have felt better on this trip  And I was just teasin' about the making stuff up part... mostly.... I really wonder about SOME of these trip reports if ya know what I mean :dance3:

Ed put the card key in the door and opened it. We stepped into the room and looked around. The aqua and coral color scheme of the resort’s exterior was now repeated in the décor of the guest room, but in paler hues. The effect was very restful. Restful…. hmmm. Let me check out the famous “Heavenly Bed.” I dropped my bag, turned around, and slowly fell back on the bed.

Ahhh yes, h-e-a-v-e-n-l-y !! My entire body sunk deep down into the fluffy white comforter that covered a pillow-top mattress. Sigh. :cloud9:

Ed laughed. “Kathy, we’ve got to get going.”

Nothing about the room seemed to be amiss, so after I took a moment to freshen up, we made our way back down to the lobby. We grabbed a cab and headed over to Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex. The parking lot was jammed with resort buses; little temporary signs were posted for the various resorts all along the curb. Hmmm. The marathon packet we received at check-in didn’t mention that Disney transportation would be provided to the WWOS, did it? :confused3 Perhaps we missed that part. No matter, we were there and we needed to get done and over to the Yachtsman Steakhouse in time for our 7:00 ADR .

We’ve never been to the Sports Complex…. I was amazed at how big it was! And how very crowded it was, too! There were CMs directing everyone to where they needed to go. There was a Health and Fitness Expo going on here all weekend with running and fitness equipment exhibits, appearances by celebrity runners, and seminars on training, racing and nutrition.

Unfortunately, we needed to go to two different locations in the giant indoor stadium to pick up our Family Fun Run 5K packets and Ed’s Half Marathon packet. Downstairs, the lines for the 5K weren’t too bad, but upstairs, the lines for the Half were pretty long. We needed to fill out release forms for all the races and then we were given our t-shirts and goody bags. The 5K shirt was a regular short-sleeved cotton tee with a “Pirate and Princess” motif. Ed’s half marathon shirt was really nice; a long-sleeved “technical” shirt that pleased him very much. :thumbsup2

The goody bags held little packets of Advil and sore muscle cream, clifshot nutrition bars, little thermo-muscle ache patches (am I sensing a theme of general fatigue, pain, and discomfort here?) as well as lots of brochures for future races all around the country. There was also a large plastic bag that we were to bring to the race that would hold our personal items/valuables. We also got our official race numbers (my first one! I felt like a real athlete!), and safety pins so we could pin them on our shirts.

Then, Ed needed to pick up his Champion Chip so he could be timed and scored for the half marathon. The chip has a little sensor that is linked to special mats that are laid out at the start and finish of a race. Ed told me that a runner’s net time is the time it takes a runner to get from the start mat to the finish line mat. It’s really a more accurate way to be timed because there are often bottlenecks at the start of a race. Sometimes, due to the sheer number of people, it can take a runner several minutes after the start just to pass the starting line! After receiving his chip, he was directed to yet another location to have it tested, just to make sure it was working okay. Whew! This race stuff is complicated. And time-consuming. We had already been here an hour and it looked like we were not going to make it to the Yacht Club by 7:00. :hourglass

“Why don’t we just bag dinner and grab a sandwich”, I asked as Ed got on the end of the chip-testing line. I was losing steam rapidly and didn’t really feel like a big dinner, anyway. But Ed had really been looking forward to a “nice dinner out, alone”, so he suggested that we just try to move our ADR back. I guess he really wanted his steak!

I called Disney Dining. I had hoped to get our dinner ressie changed to 7:30, but the earliest that they could give us was 7:55. I took it, against my better judgement.

********************

Next Up: Will Kathy be able to stay awake through dinner? Will she do the race the next morning, or cheer Ed from the sidelines? The answers to these and other burning questions will be revealed in the next chapter. (And hopefully, some pictures, too!)

Kathy

WOOOHOOOOO!! Another RN report!!! LOVING it!!! Keep it coming lady!! And bring on the pictures!!!

Sorry you were not feeling well in Disney - I hope you got to feeling better!

Looking forward to reading more.

I can't wait to hear the rest of this story. I was thinking of doing some sort of Disney run and then I tore my ACL last August. I'm 4 months post recon. now, so...maybe Jan. '08.

Now that we had bought ourselves an extra hour before dinner, Ed wanted to take a quick peek at the vendors’ exhibits. Confident that his Champion Chip was fully operational, he navigated our way through the crowds toward the main floor. (Sorry, the details of the building’s layout are a bit fuzzy… but I do remember that we went up and down stairs a few times during this entire pre-marathon weekend process.)

Before we reached the main exhibit area, a small crowd of people gathered around computer terminals caught his eye. You could sign up to text message your race progress (half and full marathon) to friends and family. The idea was that your friends would receive live “bulletins” while you were actually running your race so that they could monitor your progress. Ed thought this was a cool idea, so he signed up to have TMs sent to Tricia in Jersey and Eddie, his son in N.C. Please don’t ask me how they do this; I have absolutely no idea! ( ;) Technophobe….remember?)

I looked about for a way to amuse myself while he was waiting his turn. There was a collection of portraits on a nearby wall, so I went to take a little gander. Each picture was of the year’s high school scholar/athlete honored by Disney. A little blurb told about each one’s accomplishments. It was interesting to read about so many kids across the country that excelled in both sports, several of them in multiple sports, and academics.

Ed was finished, so we made our way upstairs. The exhibit area was jam-packed with people and it was very loud. We took a slow lap around the room. There were some give-aways from some of the race sponsors: Clif Bar was giving out little energy chews and Sharpie was giving out the cutest little markers. They had a table set up with bowls of markers in assorted colors, and small pieces of poster board so spectators could make signs. Lots of kids were sprawled out on the floor making artistic creations for their moms, dads, aunts, and uncles, etc. I’m not so sure that permanent marker and kids are such a good mix…. I saw a lot of little shirts that accidentally got ‘decorated’! :rolleyes1

There was, naturally, lots of merchandise for sale (shoes, running gear, nutritional supplements, etc.) Of course, there was lots of Disney merchandise, too! Marathon weekend tee shirts, pins, picture frames, mugs, you name it! Ed saw a really nice “I did it” half marathon tee shirt with Donald Duck on it, but he felt superstitious about buying it before the race, so we passed it by. He stopped at a (non-Disney) booth that was advertising plaques that could be custom made with your picture, medal, and finish time. They were kind of expensive, but he took a brochure, anyway.

I really wanted to get going; my cold was still bothering me and I was feeling pretty wiped out. The race was at 7:00 in the morning, and I knew we would have to get up early because Ed would want to be there by 6:30. I pulled him away from all the running stuff. (I suppose this is how he feels when I am in the Christmas Store!) “We can come back tomorrow after our nap”, I promised. So, we left the stadium empty handed (except for our goody bags), and found the bus stop for the Y&BC.

These were charter buses, not regular Disney transportation, and the drivers were not Disney employees. At the time, it didn’t seem to matter, but we would soon learn differently. :headache: (But, that’s a story for tomorrow.)

We climbed aboard the bus and settled into high-backed cushioned seats. The a/c was crankin’ and I was both happy (because it had become somewhat humid outside) and not happy (because now my throat was getting scratchy  ) We waited a bit for a few more passengers and then we were off.

We entered the front doors of the Yacht Club's main lobby and looked for signs that might direct us to the steakhouse. We began walking down a hallway past the Yacht Club Galley restaurant and continued down the long corridor. I began to think that we might be lost, but then we saw a rather large crowd of people hanging around at the end of the hall, past the Crew’s Cup Lounge, so I figured that must be it! We checked in at about 7:45, so we were 10 min early. I looked around. Some large multi-paned windows looked out on part of Stormalong Bay, so Ed and I decided to step outside and check it out.

Night had fallen and the pool complex was (very brightly) lit with the same kind of lights that would illuminate a baseball field during a night game. I thought it was a bit harsh, but you certainly could see well! We went back inside and proceeded to wait. And wait. And wait some more! It was now about 8:30 and I was so tired and hungry….I was really glad the kids weren’t here…. Billy would have been climbing the walls! I opted to lean against one of them, since there were only two small settees in the waiting area and they were taken. After a bit more I just decided, “The heck with it!”, and I sat down on the floor! I know, really classy, right? But I just couldn’t keep standing, not one minute more.

I then did something equally classy. It was close to the kids' bedtime, so I took out my cell phone and made a very public call home. Checked in with my sister... they arrived, late, but safely. (Told ya she'd be late, didn't I!) Everyone has eaten and she had driven AR home. They were now in the middle of the aforementioned fashion show. Tricia and Billy each got on the phone and we said our good nights and I love yous, with me still sitting there on the floor; not caring if all the people waiting there with us heard the entire conversation. I put my phone away and resumed waiting.

Finally, I said to my hubby, “Let’s just forget about it”, wanting nothing more than to get back to the Swan and that Heavenly Bed! But Ed was going on and on about needing to bulk up on protein tonight and then carbs tomorrow, etcetera, etcetera.… I really don’t remember. It was just that, for whatever reason, he really felt he needed that steak.

Just as I was about to stage a full rebellion, our pager-thingy lit up. Thank Heavens! We were lead to a white cloth-covered table for two and were quickly provided with menus, water, and bread. I looked around. The restaurant was barely half-full. I wondered what the hold-up had been. Oh well, let’s eat!

Ed started his meal with a shrimp cocktail and I had the lobster bisque. Mmmmm! Hot soup! I really needed that, and it was delish! We decided against drinks; I didn’t think wine would mix with all the cold medicine I had taken.

A large group of women at a nearby table was finished with dinner and was drinking a lot more than water, flirting outrageously with the men at the tables around them, and generally having a blast! We watched as round after round of shots were ordered and consumed. Oooooh! Those are gonna hurt in the morning! Something tells me these gals weren’t at Disney to run the Marathon! (I also think the convention-type name badges they were wearing clued me in to that one.)

Enough with the floor show….let’s get on to the dinner! We each had New York strip steaks and they were wonderful. Our knives cut through them “like butta”, and they were served with a tasty blue cheese sauce and potatoes au gratin. I really can’t remember too much more, except that the food was delicious and the service was good.

We were too full for dessert so Ed just ordered coffee and I had a pot of pressed tea (which really hit the spot!) After our meal, we decided to walk down to the dock and wait for a Studios boat that could drop us off at the Swan. After a few minutes, one of the Friendships came along and we had a pleasant little ride around Crescent Lake back to our resort.

Once upstairs, I realized that I had not even bothered to see what our 12th floor view was like! There was no balcony, but there was a very nice view overlooking the canal that separated the Swan from the Boardwalk. We could see Epcot in the distance to our left, and the Studios off to our right. It seemed especially pretty at night.

**Sorry, pics to follow once Ed comes home and can upload them from the camera. ( ;) Technophobe….remember?)**

More importantly than the view, however, was that the room did indeed seem quiet. We laid out our running clothes for the morning and proceeded to get ready for bed, hoping for a good night’s sleep. The alarm clock was set for five. It was now after 10:30 and we had originally hoped to be asleep an hour ago. Ah well. “The best laid plans of mice and men….”

I took a little extra insurance for a night of unbroken rest in the form of 2 Vick’s Nyquil gelcaps… those things could knock out a horse! :faint: With my box of tissues safely curled up in my arms, I settled into my side of the Heavenly Bed:cloud9: and wished my other half a good night, still murmuring my patented, “we’ll see” when he asked if I would really be doing the 5K with him in the morning…..
