Hi all. Went with mom to her first rheumy appt today. The Dr. was wonderful! He asked her a whole bunch of questions,,and i asked him some. All was going ok until he did her pressure points.I have never heard the word ouch or seen mom flinch/jerk so much. Dr is almost 100% positive it's fibro. He gave her script for Cymbalta.Anyone been on this?..Yay another med added to the list. She has a follow up in 2 weeks. Oh she also may have osteo-arthritis in her knees. She's having a hard time with all of this. She feels like she should be put out to pasture so to speak.Any words of wisdom to pass along to mom? Thanks

Paula

Paula,

No real advice on Cymbalta here. I just wanted to tell you to tell you about my mom.

My mom was diagnosed about 2-3 years ago. She developed Fibro after a bout with Lime Disease. Anyway, later that same year she did her first Disney half marathon! Since then we have done the Minnie 15k, another Disney half, as well as a half marathon here in NH. Next week we are doing the Minnie 5k & 15k races.

It sounds like your mom has more issues, and I am not trying to suggest that she walk or run a marathon. There is just absolutely no reason to be "put out to pasture!"

Cymbalta is antidepressant.....My ex-mother in law was on it. She did say if she missed a day she was very dizzy and light headed but other than that she said it worked wonders for her.

cymbalta is also supposed to help with pain...husband was in a trial program for it. it helped with some joint pain he has although the pain has been considerably worse since he stopped cymbalta.

however just as a precaution some drs still have the very mistaken impression that fibro and cfs are psychosomatic...imo i'd wonder why he chose to prescribe that particular drug and i'd ask him...that used to be a "treatment" for cfs/fibro, antidepressents which did no good and could point to him not being up on it or it could point to me not knowing it's a new drug they are using for fibro:)( since i have CFS, the treatment is different but i do have a friend with just fibro as well) but i would wonder why unless she is depressed he's using an anti depressant as an initial drug of choice rather than a pain med:confused3 the mental confusion, fatigue, pain is very hard to deal with. i have read articles where people with fibro have considered the pain to be worse than cardiac pain...don't know how old your mom is but lately( i've had cfs for almost 20 yrs, am 53) i've been having a tough time dealing with the lack of ability to live my life how i want to so i think i understand how she feels. i don't think fibro is normally as disabling as cfs but i don't know that most people with it could do as well as the poster who ran the marathons( at least the few i have known couldn't although most of them have also been able to work which most with cfs cant)..and that is hard to deal with. hopefully if she gets some of the pain under control she'll be able to do more.
