We are planning our first big trip as a family. I am toying with the idea of trip insurance. This is not a cheap trip for us and part of me hates to add the extra money, but on the other hand I worry because it seems so far away still. What if something happens, hurricane?

On that note, what if we get there and a hurricane arrives. Has anybody had that experience? OK I am in worry mode now.

'nuff said... It's like buying the extra insurance on a rental car... rarely used but often paid for...

I bought Disney's insurance last year but I'm wondering if I should ditch it this time around. With my luck, I won't get it and then something would happen.

My thoughts exactly. I buy it every time. I suppose it's a waste of money, but I get so nervous that something will come up at work and I'll have to cancel a trip. I still get nervous that I'll have to miss going, but at least know I'll have the money to be able to reschedule it.

We also go during hurricane season. So...

Have you ever had really bad weather while at Disney? How did that affect your trip?

We do for that just in case, it is a pretty costly vacation to take that chance expecially with 5 children. You never know what could happen that week or even the time we are at Disney, just the peace of mind is soo worth it for us!

We buy travel insurance when we cruise or travel outside the US and Canada, having the potential cost of being airlifted back to the States in case of a medical emergency or any expenses for medical care covered is worth every penny. (Our health isurance covers us in US and Canada--we'd have to pay in Canda and be reimbursed, but that wouldn't be a big deal.

We never did for WDW trips. It was a calculated risk we were willing to take. We also never were in a position where we had saved for years to take the trip of a lifetime, and were willing to take our licks if we had to cancel last minute or were subject to a weather related delay.

As Uk residents its a must, however there are numerous UK bank accounts that provide worldwide travel insurance as a benefit for a small monthly fee amongst other benefits, so technically I dont as I dont purchase it. It is a benefit of one of my bank accounts. I have it automatically. If I were a US resident, other than Floridian, I would buy it as you never know what is around the corner.

This year we went ahead and purchased trip insurance through another carrier since we're also going on a Disney cruise immediately after our WDW stay. Figured may as well insure the whole thing - it's worth the peace of mind. If we were doing WDW only, I'd pass on the insurance.

We went during Hurricane Edward. It wasn't that big of a deal. Northwest switched our flight free of charge and we added on 2 nights at the Poly. Simple.

Have a great trip!

We've bought the trip insurance the last couple trips because of both our parents age. They haven't went with us but we are always concerned that something may happen.

I usually buy the travel insurance on my plane tickets. This time around I paid $40. I usually feel better having travel insurance on my plane tickets since I fly out of Philly and I know you have all heard the horror stories about philly airport

I always get insurance. It's not very expensive, and it's great for my piece of mind. I have elderly grandparents, one with heart problems, and the inlaws aren't in the best of health either, so it's nice to know that if anything happens, I can cancel the trip. One less thing..........

Maybe it's because I'm getting a little older, but I tend to buy the trip insurance. Granted, it's probably of little use in the U.S. because I have excellent medical insurance, but it does cover a costly investment. In addition, I've had some travel hiccups on the airlines' part over the last year, so the extra coverage for backage, delay, etc. is comforting.

I opted against Disney's plan because it was expensive for limited coverage. We're doing a side trip afterwards with a three-legged flight, so I purchased insurance privately to cover the whole thing. I haven't had to use the insurance yet, but it's comforting to have.

We always buy the trip insurance through AAA. Several years ago I had a serious case of poison ivy which wouldn't agree with the Florida sun. The trip insurance made it possible to reschedule without difficulty.

When we've gone down in December, from the Boston area, we've purchased the insurance so that we wouldn't have to worry about snow/weather travel delays -- for us, with what the vacation costs anyway, it's peace of mind to spend the extra $$ and not have to worry.

We always get the insurance.

You never know what could come up that would cause you to postphone a trip (I'd never cancel completely!!).

I've got two 91 year old grandmothers.
I never know if something could happen to them & I'd need to be there.

we get health ins..we used it once,,$350.00 for an allergy shot for daughter..it take one thing to use all your $$$$$co workers daughter was jumped on in the pool.by another kid..$1,700.00 for broken leg to be set and casted..had ins,,got it all back..it costs $5.00 a day thats all ..and i get that back from my retirement fund..

Don't forget about the health of nontravelling family members, which is another reason why I get the insurance. It covers you for things that might prevent you from going and/or completing your vacation experience like the health/death of family members.

This is another reason to buy insurance as soon as you make your deposit as most have a preexisting medical condition waiver if purchased within 14 to 21 days of the initial deposit. If you don't, you might not be covered for a health ailment grandma, mom, dad, etc. suffers from.

We never thought to buy insurance for a WDW trip.

if there was a hurricane (yes we were in 2 there;) ) we were able to change the airfare with no cost and although we never had to change our WDW plans...I had heard that they let people change if a hurricane is about to go over WDW, they seemed flexible.

we do buy insurance for our cruises...but you pay 100% 3 months before you ever go...if something comes up you LOSE money...so its best to insure...especially since we are going in hurricane season;)
